Sparrowagreed, after thirteen years, to give up his soul and join Jones's men on theFlyingDutchman.Butanotherpirate,Barbossa,stolethePearl.WiththehelpofWilliam Turner and Elizabeth Swann, the daughter of Port Royal's governor,Sparrow tried to get the Black Pearl back. He succeeded when he killedBarbossaonIsladeMuerta.

Elizabeth Swann is also our enemy. JamesNorrington, a British officer,wantedtomarryher,butshefellinlovewithWilliamTurner.WhenNorringtonfailed to catch Sparrow, he lost his job.Will Turner's father, "BootstrapBill,"was a pirate on thePearl.He is now a prisoner on theFlyingDutchman, andmustworkforDavyJonesforever.

SparrowwenttoIslaCrucestofindJones'sheart.Joneshastotakeordersfromthepersonwhohashisheart.ButJamesNorringtonfoundit,andisnowaBritishadmiral.

Withouttheheart,SparrowcouldnotfightJones'smonster,theKraken.Hetried to escape but Elizabeth Swann tied him to the Black Pearl. TheKrakendestroyedtheship-andSparrow.

Turner,Swann,andSparrow'smen thenwent toTiaDalma.ShebroughtBarbossabackfromthedeadtofindSparrowinDavyJones'sLocker.

CaptainJackSparrowisstilldangerous.TheEastIndiaTradingCompanymustfindhimandstophim.

Fromhighabovetheship'sdeck,apiratelookedacrosstheocean.Hesawnothingexcept the twoships that they traveledwith.TheCaribbeanwascalm.Everythingwasquiet.Sowhydidhefeelsoworried?

He looked again. This time he could see something.Was a ship sailingtowardthem?Worse,wasitanEastIndiaTradingCompanyship?

He knew about theCompany agents. They killed pirates. TheCompanywantedtodestroyeverypiratewhosailedintheCaribbean-andoneveryoceanacrosstheworld.

The pirate decided to call to the captain. But then he saw a dark shapebelowthewaternexttotheship.

"CAPTAIN!"heshouted,butitwastoolate.

The shape came up out of thewater. Itwas something from the pirate'sdarkestdreams.ItwastheFlyingDutchman!

The Dutchman fired her cannon as she broke through the water. Thepirates on all three ships tried to fire their cannon, but theDutchmanwas toofast,tooclose,toobig.

Theattackendedveryquickly.Therewassmokeabovetheburningboats,and the bodies of dead pirates in the water. The Dutchman sailed through,untouched.Nothingcouldstopher.

Therewasanothershipontheocean-anEastIndiaTradingCompanyship,the Endeavour, carrying Lord Cutler Beckett, Admiral James Norrington, andGovernorWeatherbySwann.

Inthecaptain'sroomoftheDutchman,DavyJonesplayedhispianosadly.Heliftedonefingertohiseyeanddiscoveredatear.

Abovehisroom,AdmiralNorringtonandLordBeckettwerecomingontotheshipwithsomesoldiers.Someofthementhrewalargewoodenboxontothedeck of theDutchman. Itwas their job to guard that box. Inside itwasDavyJones'slivingheart.

LordBeckettsmiled."I'vewaitedforalongtimetobehere,"hethought."Jonesisnowundermycommand!Hisisthefastestshipontheoceans.Nobodycankillhim-untiltheyhavehisheart."

Manyyearsbefore,afterDavyJones'struelovebrokehisheart,Jonescutitout.HeputtheheartinawoodenboxandhiditonIslaCruces.LordBeckettspent a lot of time searching for the box. He sent Will Turner to find JackSparrow'sCompass.ThisCompasspointed to the thing thatyouwantedmost.BeckettwantedittotakehimtoDavyJones'sheart.

The heartwas found, but not in theway thatBeckett planned.Will, hisgirlfriend Elizabeth, and Jack reached Isla Cruces before Beckett. Norrington,thenwithoutajob,waswiththem.HestoleDavyJones'sheartfromtheothersandgaveittoBeckett.Immediately,BeckettmadeNorringtonanadmiral.

"I didn't get the Compass," Beckett thought. "But I have Davy Jones'sheart...andtheFlyingDutchman.NowI-andtheEastIndiaTradingCompany-cancommandtheoceans.JackSparrow'sship,theBlackPearl,istheonlyshipthatcanfighttheDutchman.ButthePearlisatthebottomoftheocean."

Joneswalked onto the deck of theDutchman. "Go away, all of you-andtake thatwithyou!"heshouted,pointingat thewoodenbox."I refuse tohavethatboxonmyship!"

"I'm sorry to hear that," Lord Beckett said coldly. "Because it's stayinghere.Ihaveyourheart,soyouwillworkforme."

"I'mthecaptainoftheDutchman,"Jonessaid,angrily.

"This is not your world now, Jones," Beckett replied. "I am yourcommander."

GovernorSwannsteppedangrilyuptothetwomen."Whenyoudestroyedthosepirateships,"hesaid toDavyJones,"wasmydaughterononeof them?ShewassearchingforWillandJack.Ihavetofindherbeforesheiskilledasapirate."

JonesturnedtoSwann."Yourdaughterisdead.Shewaspulledundertheoceanwith theBlack Pearl-bymyKraken.Didn't LordBeckett tell you?"He

smiled.

Swann looked at Beckett. His face was pale. "Did you lie to me?" heasked."IsElizabethdead?"

Norrington was placing the key in the lock of the wooden box whenSwann suddenly pulled him around. Swann took a sword from the nearestsoldier.ThenheopenedtheboxandliftedtheswordaboveJones'sheart.

"No!" Jones shouted. "Ifyoukill theheart, thenyourheartmust take itsplace.AndyouwillbecaptainoftheDutchman."GovernorSwannstopped.Hedidn'twanttotakeJones'splaceandliveforeveronthisship.ButhewantedtostopLordBeckett...Heturnedagaintothebox,butNorringtonheldhisarmandtooktheswordfromhim.

"DoyouthinkElizabethwantedthis?"heasked.HetookGovernorSwannaway.Beckett,Jones,andMercer,Beckett'sassistant,watchedthemleave.

"Youcango,Captain,"BeckettsaidtoDavyJones.

"Iwanttofighthim,"Jonesthought."ButIcan'twin."

TheDutchmancontinued tosailacross thebrightblueCaribbeanwaters,readytobringmoredeathtothenextpirateship.LordBeckettandtheEastIndiaTradingCompanyhadtheheartofDavyJones,sonopiratewassafe.

"SoonIwilldestroyeverypirateintheCaribbean,"LordBeckettthoughthappily.

CHAPTERTWO

ThePirateLordofSingapore

LordCutlerBeckettwaswrong:ElizabethSwannwasstillalive.Shewashalf-wayacrosstheworld,lookingforthePirateLordofSingapore.

Monthsearlier,whentheKrakenwassearchingforJack,

ElizabethtrickedJackontotheBlackPearlwithakiss.Thenshetiedhimto the side of the ship so she and Will could escape from the monster. ShewatchedtheBlackPearlandJackSparrowgotothebottomoftheocean.

Later,shefeltbadabouthisdeath.ShewentwithWillandJack'ssailorstosee Tia Palma. Tia Palma was a friend of Jack's, and she could see into thefuture.Shewasamysteriouswoman.

"YoucanbringJackSparrowbacktotheworldoftheliving,"TiaPalmatold them."Butyou'llneed thehelpofanoldenemy...CaptainBarbossa.JackkilledBarbossabutIbroughthimbackfromthedead.HecanhelpustobringbackJack,too."NowElizabethandBarbossawereinasmallboatinSingapore.Elizabethlookedacrossthecity.Itwasadarkandshadowyplace,fullofsecrets,pirates,andsharpknives.

Shetiedtheboattoawoodenbridge.Suddenly,amanandhistwoguardssteppedoutofthedarkness.Hewastallandstrong,withcold,hardeyesandasharp sword.Hewas TaiHuang, second in command to Sao Feng, the PirateLordofSingapore.

"Yourcommanderknowsthatwearehere,'BarbossasaidtoTaiHuang.

"You'reCaptainBarbossa,"TaiHuangsaid.

"Yes,"Barbossaagreed,"andthis isElizabethSwann.AndSaoFenghaspromisedtoprotectus."

MercerandsomeEastIndiaTradingCompanyagentswerepassing.Huangwaiteduntiltheywentaroundacorner.Thenhesaid,"Followme."

Notfaraway, twoCompanyagentswereguardinganold,brokenbridge.CaptainJackSparrow'ssailorswerebelowtheminthewater.Ragetti liftedhishead.Hisgoodeyemoved,whilehiswoodeneyelookedstraightinfront.Pintel,Gibbs,Cotton, andMartywere behind him.They swam to ametal gate, thentheywaited.TheyweregoingtoSaoFeng'shidingplace,tohelpElizabethandBarbossa.

Therewas a strangenoise.TheCompany agents jumped to their feet.Awomancameoutofthedarkness,pushingalargewoodenboxonnoisywheels.Shesmiledandshowedamouthfulofblackteeth.ItwasTiaDalma.Thenoiseof thewheelswas loud and hid sounds frombelow.The pirates started to cutthroughthemetalgate.

TaiHuang tookBarbossaandElizabeth throughanoldbathhouse toSaoFeng'shidingplace.

Elizabeth touchedBarbossa'sarm."Haveweheardanything fromWill?"sheaskedquietly.

Barbossashookhishead."No.Hecanprotecthimself,"hesaid."Butyou-bepolitewhenyou'rewithSaoFeng."

ThePirateLordofSingaporewassteppingoutofhisbath.

Elizabeth lookedathis face.Hiseyesweredarkandcold.Thismanwasdangerous!

"CaptainSaoFeng,"Barbossasaidsmoothly.

SaoFenglookedup."CaptainBarbossa!"hesaid."WelcometoSingapore.Iunderstandthatyouwantsomethingfromme?"

"Ineedashipandsomemen,"Barbossareplied.

SaoFeng lookedatBarbossaand smiled. "That's strange,"he said. "Youwantaship...Andtoday,notfarfromhere,athieftriedtostealonefromme."

SaoFengwalkedquicklyacrosstheroomtoanoldmanwhowasholdingsomemaps."Thesemapsshowthewaytotheworldofthedead,"hesaidsoftly.Hewatchedtheirfaces."Willyouradventuretakeyouthere?"

Suddenly,hegaveasigntotwoguardsnearoneofthebaths.Theguardspulledsomeoneoutfromunderthewater.TheirprisonerwasWillTurner!

CHAPTERTHREE

CaptainBarbossa'sPlan

WillTurnerwasveryunhappy.TherewassomethingthatElizabethdidnotknow.He lovedElizabeth but,months before, he saw her kissing Jack on thePearl.

Will hated Jack-but he also needed him.Will wanted to save his fatherfromtheFlyingDutchman,soheneededtheBlackPearl,thefastestshipontheocean.Butnow,WillwasSaoFeng'sprisoner.ThePirateLordpulledhimbyhishairacrossthefloortoBarbossaandElizabeth.

"Thisisthethief,"hesaidangrily."Doyouknowhim?"

"No,"ElizabethandBarbossabothsaidatthesametime.

Sao Feng studied their faces. "No?" He picked up a large knife andtouchedWill's facewith its sharp edge. "Then I'll kill him." ElizabethmovedtowardWill.

"You're afraid," Sao Feng said. "Now I know that you and thisman areworkingtogether!"

"SaoFeng,"Barbossasaidquickly."Ihadnoidea-"

SaoFeng lookedatBarbossacarefully. "Youwant togo toDavyJones'sLocker,"hesaid."Why?"

It was time to be completely honest. Pirates were not often honest.BarbossapulledasilvercoinoutofhispocketandthrewittoSaoFeng.

"APieceofEight,"thePirateLordsaidquietly.Therewasaworriedlookonhisface.

"Yes,"Barbossaanswered."It'stimetocalltheBrethrenCourt."

"TheCourthasn'tmet inmy lifetime,"SaoFengsaid. "Andwhen it lastmet,itended...badly.Myfathertoldme."

"But the time before that, it helped us to take command of the oceans,didn'tit?"Barbossasaid.

BarbossawastalkingaboutthestoryofCalypso,thegoddessoftheocean.ThefirstBrethrenCourt-ninePirateLords-caughtCalypsoandturnedherfroma goddess into an ordinarywoman. She couldn't send storms to destroy them.Fromthatday,theoceansbelongedtothepirates.

Barbossa'svoicebecamemoreserious. "AndnowtheEast IndiaTradingCompanywantstocommandtheoceans.LordCutlerBeckettisbadforusall."

SaoFengshookhishead."WhatcananyofusdoagainsttheCompany?"

Elizabeth couldn't stay quiet. "You can fight!" she shouted. Everyoneturnedandlookedather."YouareSaoFeng,thePirateLordofSingapore.DoyouwanttheCompanytodestroyeverypirateintheworld?Aren'tyougoingtodosomething?"ThePirateLordlookedcarefullyather."ElizabethSwann,"hesaid, "you are an interesting woman." He smiled at her. Then he turned toBarbossa. "But you haven't answered my question. What do you want fromDavyJones'sLocker?"

"JackSparrow,"saidavoicefromacrosstheroom.WillTurnershookthewet hair away from his face and stood up straighter. He wasn't afraid of thePirateLord.

"He'soneofthePirateLords,"Willsaid.

SaoFengwasclearlyangryatthesoundofJackSparrow'sname."IhateJackSparrow.Idon'twanttoseehimaliveagain."

"JackSparrowholdsoneoftheNinePiecesofEight,"Barbossasaid."Hedidn'tgiveittoanyonebeforehedied.Sowemustgoandgethim-"

HestoppedasswordsweresuddenlypushedupthroughholesinthefloorbyJackSparrow'spirates.ElizabethtooktwoswordsandthrewoneacrosstheroomtoWill.Hecaughtitinonehand,andcuthimselffree.

Thentherewasaloudnoiseandthewindowsbroke.TheroomwasfullofEastIndiaTradingCompanyagents!

CHAPTERFOUR

TheEscapefromSingapore

The pirates all turned to fight the agents together. Jack's men came upthroughaholeinthefloorandjoinedthefight.Theroomwasfullofsmokeandthenoiseofswordsandguns.

ElizabethsawBeckett'sassistant,Mercer.Hecameintothebathhousewitha crowd of soldiers behind him. There were too many of them. The piratesclimbedthewallsofthebuildingandescapedintothestreetoutside.Theyran,fightingfortheirlives.

Awallfelldown,knockingMercerintoashadowycorner.Fromthere,hesawsomethingveryinteresting.

SaoFengwasholdingaknifetoWillTurner'sneck."It'sstrange,isn'tit?"SaoFengsaidangrily."TheCompanyagentsfindmeonthesamedaythatyouarriveinSingapore."

"Ididn'tbringthemhere,"Willreplied.HebrokefreefromSaoFengandpulledouthisownknife."DoyouwanttomakeanagreementwithBeckett?"heasked."ThenyouneedJackSparrow.Icanhelpyoutofindhim."

"YoutrickedBarbossa,"SaoFengsaid."YouwanttotrickJackSparrow.You'lltrytotrickme."

"Theycan'thelpme,"Willsaid."Youcan."

Sao Feng understood. "I'll kill you if you trick me," he said. They putdowntheirknives,andSaoFenghandedWillthemapstotheworldofthedead.Willdisappearedintothedarkness.Mercerfollowedhim.

Elizabeth and Barbossa escaped from the fighting, ran to the waterside,andfoundWill.

"Youhavethemaps!"Barbossashouted,happily.

"AndIhaveashipandsomesailors,"Willsaid.HepointedatTaiHuangbehindhim.

"Where'sSaoFeng?"Elizabethasked.

"He'll help us to escape. Then he'll meet us at Shipwreck Cove," Willanswered.

Elizabethwassurprised."WhydoesSaoFengwanttohelpus?"sheaskedherself."MaybenowheunderstandsthatallpiratesareindangerfromtheEastIndiaagents.

"Comethisway,"TaiHuangsaid."Bequick.

TiaDalma, Pintel, Ragetti, andCotton also came out of the smoke, andtogethertheyranafterTaiHuang.

Fromtheshadows,Mercersmiled."IhaveinformationthatLordBeckettwill be very interested in," he thought. "The pirates aremeeting at ShipwreckCove.Soon,wewilldestroythemall!"

From theHaiPeng,WillwatchedSingaporeburn.His thoughtswere faraway,onhisagreementwithSaoFeng."Iwant to tellElizabeth,butshewon'tunderstand.AndIdon'tunderstandherfeelingsforJack.Webothhavesecretsnow.

"TheFlyingDutchman!"Elizabeth thought."It's there,somewherebelowthewaves.WemustfindJackSparrow.ThepiratesmustworktogetheragainstDavyJonesand theEast IndiaTradingCompany. Ifwedon't, thenwewillalldie."

TheHaiPengwassailing throughan icyocean,close to theedgeof theEarth,betweenworlds.Thewaterwasdarkandstormy,andthesnowwasfallingthickandfast.

Will studied Sao Feng's strange maps. Circles moved and turned insidecircles. There were poems written around their edges. Will read one of thepoemsagain:"Overtheedge,hack,overagain,sunup,sundown,agreenlight."

"Barbossa!"hecalled."Whatdoesthismean?"

Barbossasmiled,unworried."Haveyouseenthegreenlight,Mr.Gibbs?"heaskedthepirate.

Gibbssmoothedhisgraybeard."Ithappenssometimes,"hesaid toWill."When thesungoesdown, there'sagreen light in thesky.Somepeopleneverseeit.Somesay-"

that it's a sign.A sign that a soul is comingback to thisworld from thedead!"Pintelsaid.

Barbossalaughed."Don'tworry,Mr.Turner,"hesaidhappily."We'llfindthewaytotheworldofthedead.Thatisn'ttheproblem.Theproblemisgettingback!"

Willdidn'tfeelmuchbetter.

Later that night, Elizabeth stood on the deck and looked down into thewater."CanwebringJackhomefromtheworldofthedead?"shethought."Andwillheforgivemeforhisdeath?"Willcameandstoodsilentlynexttoher.Hedidn'tlookather."IstillloveWill,butwe'restrangers,"thoughtElizabeth.Afteraminute,shewalkedaway.

Suddenly,Willheardastrangesound.

"Barbossa!"hecalled."Canyouhearthatnoise?"

Barbossa listened carefully. With a smile he said, "Yes, these are thewaters.We'relostnow."

The ship was turning. Something was pulling it toward the noise! ButBarbossawasn'tafraid-hewaslaughing.

"Quickly!"Willshouted,wakinghismen.

Thepirates ranondeckandWill climbedhigh into the ship's sails.Willsawawhitelineofhighwaterinfrontofthem.Theycouldn'tgoback,andtheycouldn'tsailaroundit.

"Turntheship'swheel!"heshouted.

ButBarbossa'svoicewaslouder."No!"

"Gostraight!"

Willpushedhimawayandturnedthewheelhard.TheHaiPengturned...butitwasstillmovingtowardtheline.

"There's awaterfall in front of us!" Elizabeth realized. "Awaterfall thatdropsofftheedgeoftheworld!"

Willwasstill tryingto turntheship'swheel.Barbossastoodbehindhim,laughing.Elizabethshooktheoldpirate."You'llkillusall,"shecried.

TheHai Peng turned, turned... for aminute it stayed on the edge of thewaterfall. The pirates looked down into the endless black nothingness below.Then,theshipfellovertheedge.

All the pirates, except Barbossa, screamed with fear. The ship crasheddown,down,down...intothedarkness.

CHAPTERFIVE

CaptainJackReturns

Captain Jack Sparrow stood on the Black Pearl. The ship's sails didn'tmove.Therewasnowind,andthePearlwassittinginanoceanofsand.Thesunburneddown fromahotblue sky. Jackwasalone inDavyJones'sLocker.Hewasdead-anditwasnotagoodfeeling.

He climbed down onto the sand. He tried to push the Pearl with hisshoulder,butofcourseitdidn'tmove.

Hesawsomesmooth,roundstones.Pickingoneup,hethrewitacrossthesand.Hewasverysurprisedwhenthestonecamebacktohim.Itstoppednexttohisbootandbrokeintopieceslikeanegg.Insidewasasmallcrab.

Jackthrewsomesandatthecrabanditranaway.Helayonthesand,andclosedhiseyes.Hedidn'tseethecrabmoveforwardagain.Itstudiedtheship,thenitrantotheotherstones.

Timepassed.Suddenly,ashadowpassedacrossJack'sfaceandheopenedhiseyes.Somethingwasmoving-itwastheBlackPearl!

Thousandsofcrabswerecarryingitontheirbacksacrossthesand.

"Interesting,"saidJack.

Onanotherbeach,theHaiPenglayinpieces.PintelandRagetticameoutofthewaterfirst.Elizabeth,Will,Gibbs,andTiaDalmawereclosebehind,withCotton,Marty,TaiHuangandhismen,andfinallyBarbossa.

Gibbs looked up and down the long, empty beach. "This is a terribleplace,"hesaid.

Elizabeth pushed herwet hair away from her face. She lookedworried,too."Ican'tseeJack,"shesaid."Ican'tseeanyone."

"He'shere,somewhere."saidBarbossa.

TiaDalmasmiled."Jackisnearerthanyouthink,"shesaid.

ElizabethlookedpastTiaDalma.Somethingwasmovingacrossthesand.ItwastheBlackPearl!CaptainJackSparrowstoodproudlybytheship'swheel.ThousandsofcrabscarriedthePearlcloser,thentheydroppeditintothewater.

Jackwavedtohismen."Gibbs!Pintelandyou-themanwithoneeye."hecried."DidtheKrakenkillyou,too?"

ElizabethranuptoJackandputherarmsaroundhim."I'msosorry,"shesaidinalowvoice."I'msogladyou'reallright-"ButJackpushedheraway."TiaDalma!Hownicetoseeyou!"

"Howareyou,JackSparrow?"Barbossa'svoicecamefromthebackofthecrowd.

Jackstopped.He turned,andsawhisoldenemy."Barbossa!"heshoutedloudly."Ihaven'tseenyouforalongtime,since-"

"Yes,"Jacksaid,nervously."Iremember."

"Wecametohelpyou,"Barbossasaid.

BarbossapointedatthePearl."Myshipisthere,"hesaid.

Jacklookedattheocean."Ican'tseeit,"hesaid."IsithiddensomewherebehindthePearl?"

Barbossawasveryangry.HewantedtoattackJack,butWillstoppedhim.

"Jack, listen!"Willsaidurgently."CutlerBecketthasDavyJones'sheart.HecommandstheFlyingDutchman."

"Hewantstocommandtheoceans,"Elizabethadded.

"We'recallingtheBrethrenCourt,"TiaDalmatoldhim."Yes,Jack,"Gibbssaid."Theworldneedsyou."

"Andyouneedsailors,"Willsaid.Hepointedat thepirates.Jackstudiedthem."DoIwanttosailwithyou?"heasked."Threeofyoutriedtokillme."HestoppedinfrontofElizabeth."Andoneofyousucceeded."

HewalkeduptoTaiHuang."Whoareyou?"

"Tai Huang," said the tall pirate, calmly. He pointed to the Singaporepirates."Thesearemymen."

"Whodoyouworkfor?"Jackasked.

"Thepersonwiththemostmoney,"TaiHuanganswered.

"Ihaveaship,"Jackoffered.

"ThenI'llworkforyou,"TaiHuangsaid.

Thepiratesjumpedintothewater,andswamouttothePearl.Jackpulledout his Compass and looked at it, but it wasn't working in this strange andmysteriousplace.

"Oh,Jaaaa-ack,"saidavoicebehindhim.

"Myship,"Jacksaid."SoI'mthecaptain."

AsBarbossa and Jack fought,WillTurner climbeddown into the roomsbelow.HefoundElizabethsittingaloneinadarkcorner.Herfacewaswet.Wasshecrying?

TiaDalmawalkedover to them.She lookedoutat theocean. "Where isDavy Jones?" sheasked softly. "Calypsogavehima job.Hehad to takedeadpeoplefromtheoceantotheotherworld.Then,everytenyears,hecouldcomeontothelandtobewithhistruelove."TiaDalmashookherhead."DavyJoneswasaman,butnowhe is amonster."She lookedat thebodies. WillandElizabethjoinedthem.Alotofsmallboatswerecomingtowardthem.Gibbspointedagunatthem,butWillstoppedhim.Heknewwho-orwhat-theywere.

Suddenly,Elizabethsawsomeonethatsheknew.

"Myfather!"sheshouted."Father,here!Lookhere!"

Jack joined the group. He touched her shoulder. "Elizabeth," he said."Werenotbackintheworldofthelivingyet."

Slowlysheunderstood.Theyweretheonlylivingpeopleinthelandofthedead."Father!"shecried.Hervoicewasfullofsadness."Ididn'tsaygood-byetoyou."

Intheboat,GovernorSwannliftedhisheadatthesoundofhisdaughter'svoice.

"Elizabeth!"hesaid."Areyoudead?"

"No,"Elizabethtoldhim.

"IthinkIam,"GovernorSwannsaid.

"No!" Elizabeth said. "Come onto our ship! Come back with us!" She

threwaline,butthegovernordidn'ttakeit.

"Therewas awoodenbox,"her father toldher slowly. "Andaheart... Ifyoudestroytheheart,youtakeJones'splaceascaptainoftheDutchman."

Elizabethdidn'tunderstandherfather'swords,butWillandJackdid.Thiswasimportantinformation.

Morningcame, and the sunpassed slowly across the sky.ThePearlwasgoing nowhere. There was no wind, and no drinking water on the ship. Thesailorswereverythirsty.

WillwenttoSaoFeng'smapsandlookedatthemagain.Jackwasalreadythere, studying the mysterious circles and words. Barbossa was at the ship'swheel.Hedidn'tlookworried.

Will read the strangepoemagain. "Over the edge,back, over again, sunup,sundown,agreenlight."

Jackmovedsomeofthecirclesonthemaps,andsuddenlysawsomenewwords:"UPISDOWN."

"Up is down," Jack repeated.Thenheunderstood! "Sungoesdown, sun

comesup!"Jacksaid."Upisdown!"Hejumpedtohisfeetandpointedacrossthewater."Overthere!"heshouted.

Thepiratesallranacrossthedecktotheleftsideoftheship.Theycouldn'tseeanything.Suddenly,Jackturnedandrantotherightsideoftheship.

"There,itmoved!"hecalled.

Thepiratesranafterhim,andtheshipmovedwiththeirweight.ElizabethsawJackturnquicklyagain.

"Overthere!"heshouted,runningbacktotheleftside.

"What is Jack doing?"Barbossa thought.Hewent to themaps, saw themessage"UPISDOWN,"andsuddenlyheunderstood."Untieeverythingonthedecks,"heshouted.

Theshipturnedupsidedown,andeveryonewentunderthewater.Piratesheldontothesidesoftheship.Willsawthemapsinthewaterandreachedforthem.

Thentheysawagreenlight!TherewasaloudnoiseandwaterfellawayfromthePearl.Everythingcrashedbackontothedeck.Theshipwassailingonthe top of the ocean again.But thiswas not the cold and empty ocean of theworldofthedead.Here,thesunwascomingupandtheskywasgettinglight.

"We'veescapedfromDavyJones'sLocker,"Jacksaid."We'refinallybackintherealworld."

CHAPTERSEVEN

UnderAttack!

"We'reback!"Gibbsshouted.

WillsearchedthedeckuntilhefoundElizabeth.

"Thesun'scomingup,"shesaid,smiling."We'renotsafeyet-DavyJonesand Lord Beckett are still somewhere on the ocean. But we've saved JackSparrowandescapedfromtheworldofthedead."

BarbossaandJackweresmiling, too.Everyonewashappy-andthen theyallpulledouttheirguns.BarbossaandElizabethpointedtheirgunsatJack.WillandGibbspointedtheirsatBarbossa.JackpointedhisgunatWill,thenquicklypointed a second one atBarbossa.Barbossa also pulled out a secondgun andpointeditatGibbs.ElizabethpointedhersecondgunatBarbossa.

Evenwithfourgunspointingathim,Barbossadidn'tseemworried."TheBrethren Court ismeeting at Shipwreck Cove," he said. "Jack, you and I aregoingthere."

"IfthePirateLordsaremeeting,"Jacksaidangrily,"I'mgoingtosailmyshiptheotherway."

"They'remeeting to fight Beckett," Elizabeth said. "And you're a PirateLord."

"You'renotrunningaway,"Willsaid.

"Theagentswill search forusuntilwerealldead-exceptyou,"BarbossatoldJack.

Jacklaughed."ThenI'llbeCaptainJackSparrow,thelastpirate.Ilikethesoundofthat."

Suddenly, he fired the gun that was pointed at Barbossa. Nothinghappened.Barbossa,Will,andElizabethallfiredtheirguns,too.Therewasnosmoke;therewerenoshots.

"Thegunsaretoowet.Theywon'twork,"Gibbsexplained.

Willthrewhisuselessgunaway."Nowwehavetoworktogether,"hesaid."Weneedwater.Themapsshowanislandnearherewithfreshwater."Itwasagoodplan.

Jack lookednervouslyatBarbossa. "You take themen to the island,"hesaid."I'llstaywiththeship."

"I'mnotleavingmyship,"Barbossasaid.

"AndJack'snotleavinghisship,"Willsaid."Here'sanidea.Youbothgo,andleavetheshipwithme.Allright?"

BarbossaandJackwereunhappybuttheyagreed.Ashorttimelater,theysailedtowardanemptybeach.Will,Elizabeth,TaiHuang,andasmallgroupofpirateswaitedonthePearl.

"Are you still going to run, Jack?"Barbossa asked. "Can you run awayfromtheworld?That'stheproblem.You'llbethelastpirate-andonedayyou'lldie.Thentherewillbenopirates."

"Wecamebackafterwedied,"Jacksaid.

"Butcanyoubesureitwillhappenagain?"Barbossasaid.

Jackdidn'twanttothinkabouthisnextdeath.Itwastoosoonafterhisfirstone.HehadtoworkwithBarbossa.

"SotheBrethrenCourtmustmeet,"hesaidsoftly.

"It's the only way that we can win against Beckett and Davy Jones,"Barbossareplied.

Ontheisland,thepiratesclimbedupahilltoafreshwaterstreamthatran

into a clear pool.Almost immediately, someone shouted from the beach. Thepiratesranback.Ragettiwaspointingattheocean.TheBlackPearlwasn'taloneinthewater.Anothership,SaoFeng'sEmpress,wasnexttoher.

JackandBarbossaheardanoisebehindthemandturned.Tai

Huangandhismenwerepointingtheirgunsatthem.

Barbossa and Jack were taken back to the Pearl. There were a lot ofChinesepiratesontheship.ElizabethSwannwasnowtiedbetweentwoguards.

"SaoFeng,"Barbossasaid."Youfoundus."

"Someofusarelucky,"SaoFenganswered.HemovedclosertoJack.Jackwastrying-unsuccessfully-tohidebehindBarbossa.Suddenly,SaoFenghithimhardintheface.

"JackSparrow,"SaoFengsaid."Youoncehurtmyfeelings."Willcameupfrombelowthedeck.HesawJack'sface,andElizabethbetweentheguards,andhurriedacrosstoSaoFeng."She'snotpartofouragreement,"Willsaid."Untieher."

"Whatagreement?"Barbossaasked.

SaoFenglaughed."YouheardCaptainTurner,"hesaidtohismen."Untieher."

Gibbs,Marty,andCottonliftedtheirhands.Then,PintelandRagettiliftedtheirhands,too.

But Sao Feng stopped him. "I'm sorry, Jack," he said. His voice didn'tsoundsorry."Butthere'sanoldfriendwhowantstoseeyoufirst."

SaoFeng'sguardspulled Jack into the captain's roomon theEndeavour.LordCutlerBeckettstoodat thewindow,lookingoutat theocean.TheguardsdroppedJack's thingsonthetable, thentheyleft theroom.Jackbegantowalkquietlyaroundtheroom.Hewaslookingforsomething.

"Youcanstopsearching,Jack,"Beckettsaid."It'snothere."Jackstoppedmoving."What?"heasked.

Beckett turnedaround."DavyJones'sheart. It'son theFlyingDutchman.Youcan'tuseittopayCaptainDavyJones."

"So,"Jackthought,"theheartisn'there.ButnowIknowwhereitis..."

"Idon'tneedtopayhim,"Jacksaid."Idied,remember?WhyamIhere?"

BeckettpickedupJack'sCompass."Youbroughtmethis,"hesaid."NowI'mofferingyoua job,working for theEast IndiaTradingCompany.Workingforme."

Atthesametime,WillwashavingproblemsontheBlackPearl.Theshipwas already full of Sao Feng's pirates, but then Mercer came on with somesailors fromtheEndeavour.Quickly, theyranacrossand took theship'swheelfromTaiHuang.

"I don't understand," Will said to Sao Feng. "This wasn't part of ouragreement."

"ThisisnowaCompanyship,"Mercersaidwithaterriblesmile.

"Youagreed,"Willsaid,turningtoSaoFeng."TheBlackPearlismine."

"Yes-butIlied,"SaoFengsaid.

OneofhismencameupbehindWillandhithim.Willfelltothefloorandtwoothermentiedhisarms.

Sao Feng turned toMercer. "LordBeckett agreed," he said. "TheBlackPearlismine."

Mercersmiledagain."Yes,"hesaid,"butLordBeckettwon'tgiveuptheonlyshipthatcanfighttheDutchman."

SaoFeng lookedaroundat theEast IndiaTradingCompanymen.Allofthemhadguns."Icanfight,"he thought,"but I'll lose.Beckettwill followmeandkillme."

TheshipwasnowMercer's.

SaoFengwasveryangry.Barbossacameupnexttohim.

"TheCompanymendon'tfollowtheLawoftheBrethren,"Barbossasaidquietly.

"They have the Dutchman," Sao Feng said. "And what do the Brethrenhavethatcanfightthefastestshipontheocean?"

"Wehave...Calypso,"Barbossareplied.

Sao Feng looked surprised. Every pirate knew the story ofCalypso, thegoddessoftheoceans.

"Calypsocommanded theoceans,"he said slowly. "If she likedyou, shemadeyoustrong.Whenshelovedacaptain,shebroughthimgoodweatherandsmoothwaters.Then, thefirstBrethrenCourtcaughtherand turnedher intoawoman.ThePirateLordsbecamecommandersof theoceans.But that'sonlyastory.Thereisn'tarealgoddessinthebodyofawoman."

Elizabethcouldn'thearthemen,butWillcould.

"You'llhelpustoescapeifwegiveyouElizabeth?"heasked.

"Yes,"saidSaoFeng,asElizabethturnedtowardthem.

"Never!"shoutedWill,angrily.

"Allright,"saidElizabeth.ShelookedbravelyatSaoFeng.

"What?"Willsaid,surprised."It'snotallright!"

"Youputus in thisposition,"Elizabeth said tohim. "Thiswill freeus. IchoosetogowithSaoFeng."

"No!"Willshouted.Hisheartwasbreaking.

"Sowehaveanagreement?"Barbossaasked.

"Yes,"SaoFengsaid."MymenwillstealthePearlforyou.AndI'llhelpyou call theBrethrenCourt together. Elizabethwill sail awaywithme on theEmpress."

CHAPTERNINE

JackSparrowwasalsomakinganagreement-withFordBeckett.

"You can have Barbossa," Jack said. "And Turner. Yes, you can haveTurner."

"AndMissSwann?"Beckettasked.

"TheotherpeopleonthePearlwillgowithme,"Jackanswered."AndI'lltakeyoutoShipwreckCove.Doweagree?"

FordBeckettsmiledandpickeduptheCompass."Jack,"hesaid,"IhavethiswonderfulCompass.ItwillpointtowhatIwantmost."

"Yes,"Jacksaid."Andthat'snottheBrethrenCourt,isit?"

"No?"Beckettasked."Thenwhatisit,Jack?"

"Me,"saidJack."Dead."

BeckettopenedtheCompass.ItwaspointingatJack!

Beckett threw the Compass back to Jack. "I'll kill you First," he said."ThentheCompasswilltellmewhereShipwreckCoveis."Jackspokequickly."You'llarriveatthecoveandyouwon'tgetin.YouneedsomeoneinsidetobringthePirateLordsoutside."

Beckettthoughtforaminute."Canyoubringthemtome?"

"I'mCaptain JackSparrow," Jack said. "Dowehave an agreement?"Heheldouthishand.Suddenly, theshipmoved tooneside.Beckett fell forward,

andJacktookhishand.

"Agreed!" Jack cried. He ran to the door as cannonfire shook theEndeavour.Beckettfollowedclosebehindhim.

On deck they saw many bodies, and smoke coming from the cannonbelow. The Empress was sailing away and gunfire was still coming from thePearl.

Hisship!JacklookedforawaytogetovertothePearl.Herantooneofthecannon,pointed it toward thePearl, andclimbed inside it.Beckett andhismenjumpedoutofthewayasthecannonfired.Abigcannonballshotacrosstheocean, destroying the top of the Endeavour's sails. Jack was holding thecannonballandheflewstraighttowardhisship.

On the Pearl, Barbossa saw Jack fly through the air. There was a loudnoise of breaking wood, then Jack stood in front of him. He was completelyunhurt.

"Did you miss me?" Jack asked, laughing. He saw Will. "Put him inprison,"hecommanded.HismentookWilldowntotheprisoninthebottomoftheship.Jacksmiledhappily.Hewasbackonhisship.

OntheEndeavour,LordBeckettlookedathisbrokensails."Howlongwillittaketorepairtheship?"heaskedanofficer.

Anothersailfellontothedeck.

"TheEndeavourwon'tsailagainforalongtime,"theofficerreplied.

OntheEmpress,ElizabethstoodandwaitedforSaoFeng.

"Whatdoeshewantfromme?"sheaskedherself.

ThePirateLordcamequietlyintotheroomandwatchedher.

Elizabeth'seyesandskinshone.She looked... likeagoddess.Heofferedheraglassofwine.Sheaccepteditnervously.

"This is a surprise," she said. "Aren't you going to putme in prison forstealingyourmaps?"

Sao Feng smiled over the edge of his wine glass. "I can't put you inprison...Calypso."

"Whatishetalkingabout?"Elizabethaskedherself"IknowthatCalypsoisn'tyouronlyname,"SaoFengcontinued."Butit'swhatwecallyou.

"We?"Elizabethasked.

"TheBrethrenCourt.Wehidyouintheshapeofawoman."Elizabethtriedtostaycalm."HethinksI'magoddess!"shethought.Sheasked,"Whatdoyouwantfromme?"

"Yourlove,ifyouchoosetogiveittome."

"AndifIdon'tchoosetoloveyou?"shesaid.

"Then I will accept that, too," Sao Feng said. He put his hands on hershouldersandkissedher.

Surprised,Elizabethpushedhimaway.Suddenly, therewasa loudnoise.Somebodywasattackingtheship.Thepiratesrantothecannon.Elizabethcouldsee the gunfire through the windows. Then, she saw Sao Feng through thesmoke.Hewaslyingonthefloor,withalong,sharppieceofwoodinhischest.

"SaoFeng?"shecried.

"Here,"hesaidweakly.Hepulledagoldcoinfromaroundhisneck."Takeit!ImustgiveittothenextBrethrenLord."

"Me?"Elizabethsaid,surprised.

"GotoShipwreckCoveinmyplace,"hesaid.

"Captain!"avoiceshoutedfromoutsidetheroom.TaiHuangopenedthedoor."They'vetakentheship!"TaiHuangcried."Wecannot-"HestoppedwhenhesawElizabeth.

"Calypso,"SaoFengsaid,thenhiseyesclosed.

Elizabeth turned to Tai Huang and showed him the coin. "Hemademecaptain,"shesaid.

The new captain of the Empress stepped onto the deck. TaiHuangwasclosebehindher.Elizabethsawtheirattacker.ItwastheFlyingDutchman.

TheDutchman'ssailorswererunningontotheEmpress,andtyinguphersailors. Elizabeth couldn't see Davy Jones, but suddenly she noticed AdmiralNorrington.

"James?"shesaid.

Norrington'seyeswidenedwithsurprisewhenhesawher."Elizabeth!"heshoutedhappily."Iheardyouweredead!"

DavyJonesarrivedondeck.He lookedcloselyat theprisoners."Whoisyourcaptain?"heasked.

TaiHuangpointedatElizabeth.Elizabethstoodstraightandtall.Hereyeswerecoldandshedidn'tshowherfeelings.

Suddenly,apairofeyesopenedinthewoodensideoftheshipnexttoher.

"William! Is he alive?"Bootstrap asked. "Hah!Andhe's coming to saveme.Hepromised."

But the hope was disappearing from Bootstrap's eyes. "No," he saidquietly."Hecan'tcome.Hewon'tcome."

"He'lltry,"Elizabethsaid."You'rehisfather."

Bootstrap lookedatherwithsadeyes. "Iknowyou," theoldpirate said."Hespokeofyou.You'reElizabeth."

"Yes,"Elizabethsaid,surprised.

"Willcan'tsaveme,"Bootstrapsaid."Hewon't,becauseofyou.IfhekillsDavy Jones, he'll have to takehis place.He'll be captainof theDutchman forever.Ifhesavesme,helosesyou."

"Yes,"Elizabethsaidquietly.

His eyes closed and his face stopped moving. Now he was part of thewoodensideoftheshipagain.Will'sfatherwasgone.

TheEndeavour'ssailswererepairedandtheshipwasfollowingtheBlackPearl. LordBeckett stood on deck. Suddenly, he saw a lot of birds above the

water.

"Sailoverthere,"heordered.

As theEndeavour sailedcloser, thenoiseof thebirdsgrew louder.Theywereflyingaroundadeadbodythatwastiedtoapieceofwood."Thisisn'tanaccident-it'sasign,"Beckett thought."Someoneis leaving thebodiesforus tofollow.They'retakingusstraighttotheBlackPearl."

Onanotherpartoftheocean,WillTurnertiedanotherdeadbodytoapieceofwood.Heliftedittopushitoverthesideoftheship.Thenavoicespokefrombehindhimandhestopped."Iknewtheprisoncouldn'tholdyou,"saidJack.

Willdroppedthebody,andliftedhissword.

Inside the prison room, a pair of eyes opened in the side of the ship.BootstrapBillsawtheopendoor.Slowly,hepulledhimselfoutofthewood,andsteppedforward.

Elizabethsteppedoverthesideoftheshipandtooktheline.ShewasthecaptainoftheEmpressandhersailorsneededher.

Bootstrap stepped into the light. He saw Elizabeth, his son's true love."That'snotright,"hethought."SailorsontheDutchmanmuststaywiththeshipuntil the end of time." Suddenly, he started to shout: "Help! A prisoner'sescaping!"

Sailorsquicklyranacrossthedeck.Elizabethwashalfwayacrosstheline.She heard the noise and looked back. The Dutchman's sailors were movingtowardNorrington.

"James!" she cried. She started to climb back toward the Dutchman.Norringtonsawherandpulledouthisgun.Heshot throughthe lineandcut itintotwopieces.Elizabethfellintothewater.

AsNorringtonfacedtheDutchman'ssailors,Bootstrapmovedforward.Hestillrememberedhispurposeasapirate.Hehadtoprotecttheship.Hepushed

hisswordthroughNorrington'sheart.

Elizabeth pulled herself up the line to her ship. She looked back at theDutchman."James!"shecriedagain.

Norringtonfelltothedeck,dying.TherewasnothingthatElizabethcoulddo.

The Empress sailed away into the dark, leaving the Dutchman- and thedeadbodyofJamesNorrington-behind.

"TheAdmiral'sdead!"oneoftheDutchman'ssailorsshouted.

"Canwetakecommandoftheshipagain?"

They ran to the captain's room, where Davy Jones's heart was heldprisoner.Mercerandagroupofsoldierswerestandingwiththeirgunspointedattheheart.

"Nothinghaschanged,"Mercersaidcalmly.

Jones watched angrily as Mercer relocked the box. The heart-and theDutchman-stillbelongedtotheEastIndiaTradingCompany.

"I've never seen so many pirates in one place before," Barbossa said,happily.

"Barbossa," she said in a low voice. "Why aren't you preparing thecannon?All theBrethrenarehere.Theywill have todowhatyouwant."Shesteppedcloser tohim."Becareful,Barbossa,"shesaid."WehadanagreementwhenIbroughtyoubackfromthedead.Icansendyouthereagain."

Barbossaspokeangrily."Yes,wehadanagreement.ButIwilldecidehowwe succeed." He pointed toward Shipwreck Cove. "Nine Pirate Lords caughtyou,Calypso.Nineareneededtofreeyou.Untilthen,Iwon'ttakeordersfromyou."Helookedup."Mr.Pintel!Mr.Ragetti!"hecalled.HepushedTiaDalma-Calypso, the goddess of the ocean-toward them. "Take this woman to theprison!"PintelandRagettitookheraway.

Barbossacouldfeelherangryeyesonhisback.Hecouldn'tworryaboutthatnow."WhentheCourtmeets,I'lltrickthePirateLords,"hethought."They'llfree Calypso and she'll forgiveme. Jacklookednervouslyaroundtheroom.Hehadalotofenemiesinthere."WillIgetoutalive?"hethought.

TheeightPirateLordsweresittingaroundalargetable,somealone,otherswith their guards. Ammand was a tall, black-haired pirate from the BarbaryCoast.NexttohimsatVillanueva,anangry-lookingSpaniard.CaptainChevallewas next, a Frenchman with smart clothes. Fourth was Jocard, a man withshining black skin and a strong body. Then there was Mrs. Ching, a femaleChinese pirate. She was the only woman... but she was one of the mostdangerouspeopleintheroom.Finally,therewasSriSumbhajee,fromtheIndianOcean.He looked kind, but he had two large bodyguards namedAkshay andPusan.Itwasn'twisetomakehimangry.

Barbossawaiteduntileveryonewassilent.Hepointedtoawoodenbowl."Your Pieces of Eight, captains." Slowly, each Pirate Lord stood and droppedsomethingintothebowl.

Jackkepthisinhishand."OnePirateLordismissing,"hesaid."I'mhappytowaitforSaoFeng."

"SaoFengisnotcoming,"saidavoicefromthedoor.

Everyoneturned.TherewasElizabethSwann,wearingpirateclothes.TaiHuangandanotherChinesesailorstoodbehindher.

"HenamedmecaptainoftheEmpress,"Elizabethexplained."HemademeaPirateLord."

"WhathappenedtoSaoFeng?"askedAmmand.

"Sheprobablykilledhim,"Jacksaidquietly.

"How did they find Shipwreck Cove?" Jocard said angrily. "Who told

"Nobodyinthisroom,"Barbossasaid.

Elizabethlookedaround."Where'sWill?"sheaskedJack.

"He'snotinthisroom,"Jacksaid.

"Quiet!"BarbossatoldthePirateLords."It'snotimportant!Whatdowedonow?"

"We fight," Elizabeth said. The pirates began to laugh. Fight theDutchman?Wasshecrazy?

Mrs.Chingofferedanother suggestion. "ShipwreckCove iswell-hidden.Wedon'tneedtofightifwestayhere."

TheotherPirateLordsagreed.Theycouldhidefora long time,until theDutchmanandtheEastIndiaTradingCompanyleftthemalone.

"Ihaveathirdplan,"Barbossasaid.Everyoneturnedtohim."Manyyearsago,"hebegan,"thefirstBrethrenCourtcaughtthegoddessoftheocean.Thatwasamistake.Wemadetheoceanssafeforourselves,butopenedthemtomenlikeBeckett.PirateLords,wemustfreeCalypso."

There was a surprised silence. Then the Indian Pirate Lord called hisbodyguard,Akshay.Thelargemanlistenedandthensteppedforwardandspoke.

"Shoothim!"Ammandsaid.

Jonesdidn'tspeak.Hewasinaroomwiththeloveofhislife.

"What have you become? You were many things, Davy Jones, but youwereneveramonster."

"I learned it from you!" Jones cried. "For ten years I commanded theDutchman. I did the job that you gaveme.Butwhen I stepped back onto theland,youweren'tthere!Why?"

TiaDalma touchedhisbeard. "I can'thelp it. It's theway I am.Butyouloveme."

DavyJoneslookedaway."Idon'tloveyou,"hesaidangrily.

"That's sad," TiaDalma said quietly. "Because soon Iwill be free.AndwhenIam,Icangiveyoumyheart.Wecanbetogether,always."

DavyJonesslowlyputthegunbackinhisbelt.Ashemovedbackintotheshadows,heturnedtoheragain."AndtheBrethrenCourt?"heasked.

"Theymademeaprisoner,"TiaDalmasaid,angrily."Theywillsuffer."

Barbossa hit the table again and the pirates turned to him. "We can freeCalypso!Thenshe'llbegratefulandhelpus."

"I agreewithCaptain Swann," said Jack. "We fight." Barbossa laughed."You'vealwaysrunawayfromafight!"

"That'snottrue!"Jacksaid."Ifighthardandoften,becausethenIcanrunaway.Wecanstayhere foryears,butwe'llbeprisoners.Wemust fight-to runaway."

"Whowillwefight?"Mrs.Chingasked.

"Beckett,"Elizabethsaidimmediately.

Thepiratesagreed.TheydecidedtofighttheEastIndiaTradingCompany,and to destroy theDutchman. Barbossa had other ideas, but the pirates didn'tlisten.

"ThePirateLordsmustfreeCalypsoormyplanwillfail,"hethought."TiaDalmawillbeangry..."

Hetriedagain."OnlythePirateKingcanstartawar.CallCaptainTeague,KeeperofthePirateLaw!"

Twopiratesranoutoftheroomandreturnedwiththeoldpirate.Hewascarrying a large book. This was the famous Pirate Law, written by the firstBrethrenCourt.

Teague unlocked the book and opened it. Everyone waited for him tospeak.Finallyhelookedup."Barbossaisright."hesaid.

Jackreadoutthewords:"OnlytheKingcanstartawar,talktotheenemy,andorganizeourmen."

"We haven't had a king since the first court," Chevalle said. "Why?"ElizabethaskedGibbs.

"The king is chosen by a vote," Gibbs explained in a low voice. "Eachpirateonlyvotesforhimself."

"Icallforavote!"shoutedJack.

Ammandliftedhishand."IvoteforAmmandtheCorsair,"hesaid.

"CaptainChevalle,"saidChevalle.

The vote continued around the table. "I'll have to do what they do,"Elizabeththought,thensaid,"ElizabethSwann!"

Jacklookedaroundhim."Ivotefor-ElizabethSwann."

Theotherpiratesshoutedangrily.

Jackspoke to theCourt. "Aren'twegoing to follow thePirateLaw?"heasked.

"Wehaveto,"Mrs.Chingsaid."Whatdoyousay,CaptainSwann,KingoftheBrethrenCourt?"

ThenewPirateKingstoodup."Inthemorning,"shesaid,"weshallfightthe East India Trading Company, destroy the Dutchman, and escape to theocean."

The pirates moved out to their ships. Angrily, Barbossa gave a sign toPintel and Ragetti. They picked up the bowl with the Pieces of Eight andfollowedhimoutoftheroom.

Jack left last.Hisplanswere starting towork...buthe stillwanted tobecaptainoftheDutchman.

AstheBlackPearland theEmpresspreparedforwar,hundredsofpirateshipsmetnearShipwreckCove.Oneverydeck,piratessharpenedtheirswordsandpreparedtheircannon.

Suddenly, they saw the Endeavour through the gray clouds. The pirateslifted their swords. One ship against hundreds of pirate boats! Lord Beckett

couldn'twin!But then they saw another ship.And another.And another.Andanother.

Thepirates'excitedcriesslowlystopped.Thenthewaterbegantomove.TheFlyingDutchmancameupoutoftheoceaninfrontofBeckett'sships.ThepiratesweresilentastheylookedatthemonstrousfacesofDavyJonesandhismen.

LordBeckettwasstandingonthedeckoftheEndeavour.Hesmiled."Jackkepthispromiseandbroughtmethepirates,"hethought."Butwhatwillhedonext?"

Every pirate was asking the same question. Thousands of angry eyesturnedtoJack.

BeckettpointedatElizabeth."Her,"hesaid."WhentheBrethrenaredead,JackwillsailawayonthePearl.Elizabethwillbeinhisarms."

Suddenly Elizabeth understood. "Jack doesn't want to die again," shethought. Pintel broughtTiaDalmaup on deck. She looked small andweak but agoddesswas hidden inside her.Barbossamade a sign and theChinese piratesmovedtowardElizabethandWill.

"Sorry, King of the Pirates," Barbossa said. "I don't think Jack can winanything."

Suddenly,thebowlwasonfire.Whenitstoppedburning,thegoddesswasstandingonthedeck.

Calypso turnedand lookedangrily at theDutchman.Shebegan togrow,gettingtallerandtaller.Barbossastoodinfrontofher.

Thegoddessdidn'tlookathim."CRAZYMAN!"sheshouted.

Suddenly,shefell.Thousandsofcrabslanded,inplaceofherbody.Theyran over the edge of the deck and into the water. The goddess of the oceandisappearedcompletely.

Thetwoshipssaileduponbothsidesof theEndeavour.Beckettcouldn'tescape. "I can't destroy the pirates," he said to himself, "and now they willdestroyme."

"Fire!"Willordered.

"Fire!"shoutedBarbossaandElizabeth.

"Fire,"saidJack,morequietly.

Cannonfired.When thesmokecleared, theEndeavourwasslowlygoingdownintotheblueCaribbeanwaters.

Beckett'sothershipsturnedaway.

"They'rerunning,"Gibbssaid."They'reafraidbecausetheDutchmanand

thePearlareworkingtogether."

On the Dutchman, Captain William Turner looked sadly across at thePearl.

"Give us your orders, sir," saidBootstrap's voice, behind him. "You canleavetheDutchman,"Willsaid."You'refree."

"Iwanttostaywithyou,"Bootstrapsaid.

"Fine.Taketheship'swheel,Mr.Turner."

Bootstrapsawthesadnessinhisson'sface."Onedayonland,tenyearsontheocean.It'sahighpricetopay,"hesaid.

Willwas sitting on a rock, looking out at the ocean. Elizabeth came upbehindhim,andputherarmsaroundhim.

Tenyears later, high above the ocean, a youngboywas singing a piratesong.Elizabethsmiledashersonplayed.Then,sherantohim.

Suddenly, the boy stopped. The sunwas going down. Elizabeth and herson stood andwatched thegolden sun. It fell lower and lower in the sky, andthentherewasagreenlight.Outontheocean,theysawamuch-lovedshape.

"Willhasreturned,"Elizabethsaidquietly."Hekepthispromise."
