At the end of the session the participants
would be able to-
1.Determine when and how to use LAQ & SAQ
2.List advantages and limitations of LAQ,SAQ
3.Understand principles of their construction.
4.Comments on LAQ s & SAQ s shown, and
construct 2LAQ & SAQ adhering to given
guidelines.
Used to test Cognitive domain of students
e.g. comprehension ,interpret ,recall ,
ability to apply. They form part of Written
(theory)Examination.
They should fulfill usual criteria for the test:
 a) Validity: measures what it is supposed to
measure.
b)Reliability: Accuracy & consistency.
c)Objectivity :Degree of concordance between
examiners.
d)Relevance : To current situation.
1.Purpose: To judge students’ level of
understanding, their ability to express
sequentially and organize the subject
matter.
 2. Construction Of LAQ :
 A. selection of topic
 B. framing the question
 C. answer expected
 D. marks allotment
 E . relevance
 F. Clear & unambiguous language.
 G. Avoid vague terms &short forms.
 H. Ask specific verbs (Define ,Enlist
Enumerate ,compare and contrast , state
reasons)
 I. Preferably divided into different elements
1.with properly constructed LAQ it should be
possible to test level of understanding /
knowledge in-depth.
 2. it tests students’ ability to organize and
put matter in logical order.
 3. LAQ has validity.
 4. LAQ is easy to set.
 5. revaluation is possible.
 1.more subjective component( students may
interpret it differently from examiner )
 2. only cognitive domain can be tested
 3.less reliable
 4. Grading is- Time consuming , Difficult ,
Extraneous factors may have influence.
 5. Covers a limited field of knowledge.
 Describe the stomach . Marks:12
Give the relations ,blood supply and
lymphatic drainage of the stomach.
Marks-6+3+3=12
Write what you know about the radial nerve.
Marks-12
Describe the course and distribution of the
radial nerve in the arm. What are the effects
of its injury at the mid-arm level.
Marks : 4+4+4=12
Discuss the knee joint. Marks 12
Describe the intrinsic ligaments of the knee
joint. Explain the locking and unlocking of
the joint. Marks-6+6
 1) Discuss burn injuries in children. 12marks
 2) Write all you know about malnutrition in
Children. 16marks.
 3) Describe epidemiological determinants,
Prevention, and treatment of malaria.
12marks
 4) Discuss the treatment of anemia.
12marks.
 *Make 4 groups
 * Each group will prepare 2 LAQs (
8/12/16marks)
 *Time: 5 to 8 min.
 * Group representative will present them.
 *other participants will offer comments.
 Construction :
 1.Topic to be covered.
 2.Frame the question taking into
consideration- clarity of directions,
language, time available marks alloted ,
 Appropriate difficulty & discrimination level.
 3.Contents of answer expected.
 4.Marks allotment ( 2/3/4/5)
1.with properly constructed SAQ it should be
possible to test level of knowledge of a
specific short topic.
 2. Many SAQs can cover wide syllabus.
 3. They carry better validity
 4. Revaluation is possible.
 5.Easy to mark
 1. Only cognitive domain can be tested.
 2.Difficult to set.
 3. Some subjective component possible..
 4. Less reliable.
1.Definition type- Define : Infant Mortality
Rate, Define : Epidemiology.
2.Draw diagram type- Draw a neat labelled
diagram of nephron , population pyramid
3.Specific / Limited response type- Enlist
elements of Primary Health Care
 4.Numerical problem type- Bio- statistical
exercise,calculations(Risk ratio/odds ratio)
 5.Short case History type.
 6. Enumeration( comm.Nutr.Programs)
Write short notes- (3 to 4 marks)
 1) Balanced diet.
 2) M.M.R.
 3) W .H .O . day theme: 2014.
 4) Write a note on : Nephrotic syndrome.
 5) Write briefly on : Myco.tuberculosis.
 6) What do you think of Swine-flue vaccine?
 Form 4 groups.
Each group will prepare 2 SAQs (2/3/4marks)
 Time: 5 to 6 min.
 Group representative will present them
 Other participants will offer comments.
 1) Good coverage of syllabus.
 2) Testing on different domains of learning.
 3) Fair mix of various types of questions.
 4) Clarity and precision of questions
 5) Appropriate difficulty & discrimination
index.
 6) No overlapping of questions.
 7) Ensuring expected writing and available
time match.
 8) No typographical error.
 1.Student’s approach towards learning can
be significantly influenced by the method of
Teaching & Evaluation
2.LAQs & SAQs form important components
of written examination. They test cognitive
domain.
 3.Advantages ,Limitations, and general
guidelines should be kept in mind, also
systematic approach is required while
framing LAQs & SAQs
