Happy Spring, Neighbors! Hope everyone is ready for some nice weather

after all the cold, windy, snowy and crazy winter.

Below are some notes from the March “President’s Page” from the web site.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out and about as the sun comes out!

I spoke with a member, Ed Limbacher from the SSVFD, about blowing out the drop

drain pipe again in the post office, dumpster area now that it has been opened up near

the sound. They will be glad to do it again in the next couple weeks.

The drop drain west of the dumpsters is now functioning. The contractor that we hired

cleaned out the pipe at the sound end on Saturday, 3/2/13. The SSVFD followed by mak-

ing sure it was open by blowing it out. They will come back every 6 months and after any

storms to keep it open for us.

Coinjock Farms, as per our contract with them, picked up all of the branches and twigs

in the common areas that blew down during the recent wind and rain storm.

A tree blew down in the post office area during the recent wind and rain storm and a res-

ident, Jeff Bowlin, volunteered to cut it up and remove it for us for a minimal fee. Ms.

Sanders, Village Realty, approved this as an emergency measure since he was licensed

and insured. He was able to clear the area within

hours.

I replaced the torn American flag at the front entrance

with one that MPHOA already had that was repaired

by my wife Donna. I sprayed the pittosporum and eu-

onymus plants at the front entrance with deer off. I

also put the MP Green paint that was used for a post

repair back in the shed.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill Myatt, MPHOA president

Martin’s Point 8th Annual Yard Sale

Saturday, April 20, 2013

8:00-11:00am

Soon, days will be turning warmer and we will begin to think about spring cleaning. Per-haps you have indoor or outdoor items that you no longer need. The community yard sale will provide the opportunity to pass these items on.

If you are interested in participating, fill out the form available at the Gate House or from Leslie Sanders at [email protected] and return it to her or the Gate House by Saturday, April 13th. You may also send it via email to Sandy Byberg at [email protected]. Participating residents will be identified by a sign in front of their home and maps locating participants will be made available at the Gate House prior to the event.

A special large-item trash pickup is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23rd fol-lowing the yard sale to haul away “leftovers” or other large items from the curb. Arrange-ments can be made with Hot Line for a truck to come by on Thursday, April 25th in or-der to pick up donations. You will need to contact Hotline at 473-5121 on Monday, April 22nd to request a pickup if you wish to donate items.

THE SOUTHERN SHORES VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT NEEDS YOU

If you think you would enjoy a new career helping others, then I encourage you to learn more about our organization of volunteer firefighters and first responders. You do make a difference as a volunteer when you help to serve your family, your friends and your neighbors. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to share your time and talents.

The training to become a volunteer firefighter includes a new member program where you will learn the basics of firefighting. Additional training is available through local, state and national programs. Don’t think you want to be a firefighter? We have many opportunities where you can be a part of our program, from Medical Re-sponders to Maintenance to data entry and more. If you want to be a part of us, then we have a place for you.

We are a close-knit group of men and women who train on Wednesdays to develop a cohe-sive team. We come for all backgrounds. We are retirees, employees and business owners. We do this for many reasons, but most of all we know we can make a difference. Being a volunteer firefighter is a reward-ing experience, providing a valuable service to the town of Southern Shores and the commu-nity of Martin’s Point.

I encourage you to call (252.261.2272) or to visit us at the station, located at 15 South Dogwood Trail, across from Kitty Hawk Elementary School. Come by and let me show you around and tell you our story and how you may become a part of it

A Vision for the Future

Submitted by Greg McMahon

As some of you have heard the Board of Directors is develop-ing a strategic plan to guide their actions over the next five years. A well-developed strategic plan will serve as a blueprint for the future as it will allow the association to take a long-range view of:

What it hopes to accomplish;

When it expects to implement elements of the plan (i.e., the sequence of events);

How it will do so (i.e., the resources required including the necessary financial re-sources).

Bobbie Overton and Greg McMahon are spearheading efforts to develop the strategic plan which, importantly, will be influenced by the members of Martin’s Point. The first step in this process is already underway. It includes in-depth interviews with all board members and some former board members. This step is needed to help develop the dis-cussion guide for the next phase of the research which includes focus groups with mem-bers of the community who have not participated in phase one. The final phase of the re-search will quantify what we learned in phase two via an online survey among all member households of Martin’s Point.

In order for the plan to reflect the vision of our community everyone must get involved. Those who wish to express their views in the next phase can volunteer for participation in the focus groups to be held in May/June. (If you are interested, please inform us by email-ing Leslie Sanders at [email protected]. Most important will be partici-pation in the online survey where we hope to get as many households represented as pos-sible.

The entire process will identify the current status of the association, including its mission, vision for the future, operating values, needs (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), goals, prioritized actions and strategies, action plans, and monitoring plans. We expect to have a draft of the plan completed by the fall season. Keep in mind, however,

that strategic planning is a continuous process. We expect that over its intended lifespan (5 years) our strategic plan will undergo changes and evolve to address changing needs and the unpredictability of fu-ture events.

Strategic planning is one of the most exciting (and challenging!) exer-cises an association can undertake. In order for Martin’s Point to flourish, we must plan for the future. Without strategic planning, we will never know where we are going, much less if we ever got there.

A FEW NOTES FROM YOUR MANAGER

As I do my weekly drive – through Inspection of Martin’s Point there are several things I notice. The damage from the last two hurricanes is be-coming less and less apparent and homes and yards are being spruced up all over the community. Besides admiring all the lovely landscaping, budding flowers and beautiful homes I have started to notice a few things that could be improved.

Boats and Trailers; I am seeing more and more boats and boat trailers parked in front yards and in the building set-backs close to neighbor’s yards. While I understand that Martin’s Point is, almost by definition, a boating community, it contributes to a messy appearance. In the past the Association has been lenient about enforcing boat parking rules but I know the Board and many members would appreciate everyone being a little more mindful of the general appearance of the community and respectful of your neighbor’s views. Currently there is room at the Marina and, as soon as Dominion Power has completed their work in the long term parking area at the Postal Lot, there will be room there as well. If you are interested in moving your boat and/or trailer to either of these areas, be sure it has one of the permanent numbered stickers issued by the Association. If you need a sticker or assistance finding a parking space, feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help you. Remember, storing trailers on empty lots is not allowed.

Pet Waste; Lately I have noticed someone is going to the trouble to bag their dog droppings but then they are leaving the bags in the street, at the base of signs and elsewhere. Cars then run over them leaving a smelly mess mixed with plastic bags that is worse than not picking up at all. There is no one else to clean this up and if the Association is forced to hire someone the cost will go back to the members. As the weather gets warmer this will only get worse. Please pick up after your pet and dispose of it properly. There is really no excuse for not doing so. If anyone sees someone leaving bags of poo around, please contact me and let me know. This information will be kept anonymous.

Roadside Grass Seeding; Your Landscape contractor will be seeding the common areas as soon as night time temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. When you see the new grass sprouting please try to give it a chance to take hold before driving over it.

Trees and shrubs in the Common Area; This spring I will be identifying several areas (mostly in front of unimproved lots) where saplings and shrubs have begun to spring up. Once they have been identified your landscapers will begin removing them. If you notice that your bushes or trees are overhanging the Common Area (20 feet measured perpendicular from the pavement edge) that will hamper mowing, please trim or remove them. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Finally, I sincerely hope that all of you enjoy a beautiful spring and summer this year …..and NO hurricanes!

Duck, Duck, Goose!

Contributed by John Rice

For years, we have had a problem

with geese using the Marina's piers

as a restroom. Last year, in an effort

to mitigate the issue, we temporarily put up some poultry fencing along

the decking parallel to Ginguite Creek. This proved to be a very success-

ful, though not completely effective, deterrent.

Based upon this experiment, we recently had the plastic fencing attached

to permanent, treated posts. The posts have been installed at distances

apart so that, when the plastic fencing deteriorates, we can easily replace

it with vinyl or wooden fence sections. There are two gated access

points. If you open the gated areas, they are simple to close.

Please ensure that the gates are secured upon ingress and egress so as

to minimize the goose droppings on the piers.

Preventing West Nile Virus

With mosquito season almost here, it’s important to take precautions against a poten-tially serious illness—West Nile virus. This widespread disease can be a threat to hu-mans, animals and several species of birds in the U.S., particularly during the summer through late fall when mosquitoes are most active. Mosquitoes bite infected animals and then transmit the virus to people.

Symptoms

While more than three-quarters of people infected with West Nile virus won’t get sick, those over the age of 50 are particularly susceptible. According to the Centers for Dis-ease Control’s website, those who experience the effects of West Nile virus may suffer flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea and vomiting. Some people also develop swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. In a few very severe cases, which usually require hospitalization, the patient may experience disorientation, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numb-ness and even paralysis or coma. In extreme cases, these symptoms are irreversible.

What We Can Do

Use an effective insect repellent diligently during mos-quito season. Since mosquitoes are particularly active at dawn and dusk, wear long sleeves and long pants, or just remain indoors during these times. Eliminate standing water in buckets, barrels and unused flower pots on your porch or in your yard, and drill holes in tire swings so water can drain. Put mosquito dunks in ponds and other areas where there is standing water. They can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes and ACE. Turn over kids’ wading pools when not in use, and change the water in pet dishes and bird baths every 48 hours. Make sure window and door screens are in good repair and that gutters are free of debris. Use netting over baby carriages and strollers.

Also, drain your swimming pool if it is not in use, and cooperate with Dare County’s integrated mosquito abatement program. Their website has a wealth of useful infor-mation and a great video explaining the efforts they take to reduce the mosquito pop-ulation. Log on at http://www.darenc.com/publicworks/mosquito.asp to view it and other valuable information including a service request form.

One More Caution From the CDC

Some bird species, such as crows and blue jays, are particularly susceptible to West Nile virus. If you find a dead bird on your property, don’t handle the body with your bare hands. Contact the local health department for instructions on reporting and dis-posing of it.

For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/wnv_factSheet.htm.

As of July 1st, 2012 the Bob Perry Road Recycling Center will no longer

accept non-recyclable large items, demolition and/or construc-

tion debris from anyone other than residents of the Town of Kitty

Hawk (that is not us). All of these items must now be taken to the Dare

County Landfill in East Lake. Please do not put any of these items

in the Association’s dumpsters. It makes them too heavy to lift by

the trash trucks and the Association has to pay to have these items re-

moved which ultimately is paid for by you, the members of the association.

The Recycling center will still accept regular recycling and large METAL items

such as appliances. It is open Monday - Saturday and located on Bob Perry Road next to

the Dare County Boat Ramp. Directions: Turn west on West Kitty Hawk Road, across from

Kitty Hawk Post office (approx. 4 milepost); Follow West Kitty Hawk Road; turn left on Bob

Perry Road (small brown sign with "RECYCLE" and an arrow pointing left on shoulder of

roadway); Stay on Bob Perry Road, recycling center on right (along with public boat ramp,

picnic area etc.).

For more information, contact the Town of Kitty Hawk at 261-1367 or visit their web site,

Don’t forget our web site:

www.martinspointhoa.org.

(not .com)

If you have never visited the site

before, check it out! There is great

information about the peninsula’s

history, news on the association

including the names of current

Board and Committee members,

boating information on the Marina

Page and updates from your Presi-

dent on the President’s Page.

Visit now and visit often!

Reminder…...The neighborhood speed limit is

Thirty (30) miles per hour.

Due to excessive speeding, the police

(unmarked and marked) are on patrol —several

tickets have already been given out. Remind

your guests, driving teens and service people.

Do you want to be part of the next statistic?

Safely Walk, Run and Bike

Remember to ride your bike with the traffic ...and walk/run

against the traffic.

Pedestrians should always:

walk on the left side of the road facing traffic;

wear something white or reflective - do not assume that drivers can see you;

be ready to move out of the way in case a driver cannot see you. At night, remem-

ber that it is more difficult for drivers to see you - use a flashlight.

Drivers should always yield to pedestrians whether they are following the rules or

not. Slow down and say hello—practice being on “Island Time”.

Other Reminders

We are very fortunate in Martin’s Point - there are many that are not as lucky. There are Food Pantries and Donation sites (HotLine, Goodwill) for clothing, fur-niture and things you don’t want anymore. Old blankets and towels? The SPCA could use them for bedding. I’ll be happy to pick them up and drop them off.

BOAT AND TRAILER NOTICE If you have a boat or trailer parked at the ma-rina or the postal lot, make sure that it has a Martin's Point sticker on it. There are two empty trailers in particular for which we are unable to identify the owners, and they are in jeopardy of being towed away. Contact Leslie Sanders at Village Realty Management to obtain stickers. 480-4732

TV SATELLITE DISHES If you plan to install a television satellite dish on your property, please be aware that it must be located in the side or rear yard, in con-formance with the principal building setbacks (12 1/2 feet from side property line and 25 feet from rear property line). This is a Dare County Zoning requirement, and it is being enforced by the Building Inspector. A dish may be permitted in the front yard if that is the only location which will receive a signal.
