Wild Apricot UpdateYour Privacy— How Much Information Do You Wish to Share?by Stan Kalisch

With the implementation of the Wild Apricot system, APT adopted a privacy policy. You can access the full policy on our site at aptatl.com . Go to the bottom of most pages on the site to find the link to the policy. The policy states, “Members can choose what personal data they wish available to other members. All personal data a member allows to be displayed are considered "public" and may be shared with both other APT members and external parties. What data are displayed publicly and what are not are controlled by the member by entering his profile in aptatl.com and selecting the privacy option. What personal data are shown as "public" and what are not is the responsibility of the member.”

At the very minimum, the only information that a member is required to share is his name. When a member registers with APT, the following personal information is automatically made available to APT members: the member’s name, his (first) name by which he wishes to be called, preferred email address, partner (if one is listed), and his picture (if one is provided). A member can choose not to share any data, other than his name. How much information a member shares is controlled by him using the privacy function available in his profile on aptatl.com.

A member can also choose to share additional data such as his telephone number(s), address, hobbies/interests, and birthday. A member must select the privacy option, either for members or the public to view, in order for others to see the information.

For specific information on making changes to your profile and to your privacy settings, go to the “How To’s” tab on aptatl.com. (On the banner with the tabs—topics—to the right of “Aptitudes,” click on the three horizontal bars to show additional topics, e.g., “How To’s.”) There you will find descriptions of features of our website and how to perform tasks such as editing your privacy settings.

APT endeavors to protect the privacy of individuals. On the other hand, APT wishes to encourage members to share information with other members. In particular, APT

Keeping Up with Our Membersby Richard Harlan, Membership Director

When I was considering this month’s article, I took a look at all the events we offered in February! We sponsored: 12 coffee and conversation sessions (Kaffee Klatches and Morning Joes), 5 lunches, 3 plays, 2 symphonies, 4 dinners, 2 movies--one at two members’ home and one at a theater, brunch with bowling, and, of course, our monthly meeting. That is 30 events in the abbreviated month of February!

I am truly impressed with all the things we are offering--to support nearly every member’s possible interests. And, Adam Stanger, our events coordinator, is working hard to create new and exciting activities. This is what your membership brings you—an atmosphere for fellowship and engagement. So, don’t just read your Aptitudes, be inspired and participate!

By the way, That Was the Day—When We Looked Younger photo match last month was not intended to be a one-shot piece. We encourage you to send in a fairly recent picture of yourself and a “young man” pic (high school or early college), and maybe also a “baby” picture. We look forward to continuing this fun activity. Please submit your pictures to our Aptitudes’ editor at [email protected]. And, when you have found that “current” picture of yourself, upload it to your profile on aptatl.com.

Also, if you know of a member who is not feeling well, just let me know at [email protected]. We would like them to know that we are thinking of them.

encourages our members to share their interests. If you feel comfortable doing so, go to your profile. Edit the profile by going to the field “Your interests” and listing your hobbies, interests, etc. Save the changes. Then go to the “Privacy” option. Change the permission status so members can see the information. And be sure to SAVE the changes! (Check in the “How To’s” section of our website for details.)

And while you are updating your profile, how about adding your picture? It is so nice to be able to match names with faces!

Sharing information about ourselves can bring us closer together. We encourage you to offer as much as you are willing and comfortable to share.

The February meeting was not a typical meeting in that there was no single speaker. Instead, tables were set up and the attendees moved from table to table. Each table was led by a board member. The attendees had ten minutes at each table. The topics were “Revenue,” led by Bill Wickham, “Wild Apricot,” led by Stan Kalisch, “Activities,” led by Mike Murphy and Adam Stanger, “Prime Timers Worldwide,” led by John Hudson, and, “PRIDE,” led by Richard Harlan. The purpose was to provide information and increase interest in the club’s activities.

At the “Revenue” table, Bill began by saying that $6,100 was a gift from Woody Baldwin’s estate. The club runs a deficit each year of roughly $500 to $1,000 (based upon its yearly income). The holiday parties, e.g., the one at Maggiano’s Little Italy in December 2018, contribute significantly to the expenses. To counter our deficits, the Board may need to consider increasing members’ dues. Bill was looking for additional ideas to increase revenues. One member suggested a raffle other than the 50/50 raffle. Bill received several other suggestions of ways to increase revenue.

At the “Wild Apricot” table, Stan Kalisch started by indicating the purpose of Wild Apricot--to manage membership and APT’s numerous events. Stan passed out a handout of the Wild Apricot site and explained how to log into the system and some of the features of the site. Clearly, the site is much more robust than Big Tent. Member information was transferred from Big Tent to Wild Apricot, but each member now needs to review and update his information as needed. Stan noted that members do have the option of selecting privacy options so that data they wish not revealed can be hidden. Stan also elaborated on the registration process for events requiring reservations, e.g., symphony events. Members are now able to register directly from an invitation email or on aptatl.com.

At the “Activities” table, Mike and Adam began with a discussion regarding one of APT’s frequent events, potlucks. It appears that distance was the main reason that people do not attend. Adam passed out a handout of some suggestions regarding possible APT events. He noted in particular a new APT-planned event—a five-day cruise to Cuba from September 30th to October 5th, departing from and returning to Fort Lauderdale. The price of the cruise appears to be very reasonable. (See advertisement for Cuba cruise on page 11.) Some other potential events include: a cooking class at Cook’s Warehouse, a Chateau Elan winery tour/tasting, and a CNN VIP tour. In addition to these potentially new events, APT continues to offer a substantial array of events. (See monthly calendar for the events scheduled.)

John Hudson, host for the “Prime Timers Worldwide”(PTWW) table, noted that PTWW publishes a newsletter every two months. APT can obtain greater exposure nationally by including some of its Aptitudes’ articles. John then went over the events that are upcoming, including the bi-annual PTWW convention in San Antonio, October 29th to November 2nd. (Participants at the convention will have an entire hotel booked for PTWW.) There is also a western regional meeting in Las Vegas. (Hotel costs are only $29 per night!). Prime Timers Worldwide is also planning a cruise in January. APT members are part of PTWW and have access to the benefits PTWW offers.

The “Pride” table, hosted by Richard, talked about the annual Atlanta PRIDE event. This year, the PRIDE event takes place October 10th and 11th. With its presence at PRIDE, APT plans to recruit men to join our organization. But help is needed. APT needs members to sign-up for two-hour shifts to be present at the APT booth in Piedmont Park, greeting passers-by and talking to them about APT.

Birthdays are recognized on the basis of each member’s record in Wild Apricot. We would like to recognize each member’s birthday at the appropriate time. Anniversaries are listed in Aptitudes either at the express request of each couple or if Wild Apricot records provide

anniversary information. If you would like your anniversary announced in Aptitudes, please email the date of your anniversary [email protected]

or enter the information in your Wild Apricot member record. We request that members review their Wild Apricot records occasionally to verify the accuracy of the data. Although we strive for accuracy, if we have missed your birthday, anniversary, or welcome notice,

please let us know so that we can correct the omission in the next issue.

Special Thanks to Roger ParkFor years, Roger Park has provided an article summarizing each month’s presentation by a speaker. Last month we challenged him with taking on reporting from each of five groups, each addressing a

different topic. Roger has an unbelievable talent of capturing the most minute details in presentations. And, he for so many months…years…unselfishly has made the effort and taken the time to create

summary articles for Aptitudes. This month’s article is his last. We thank Roger for all of is work. We look for his continuing presence

at our monthly meetings. He can finally take a rest from taking notes!

CRUISE TO CUBA

HAVANA OVERNIGHT — the HEART and SOUL of CUBA

Our Cuba cruise offers more time in Havana, so you can fully immerse yourself in the experience with two days and a night in port. Visit Cuba to catch the sunset over the Morro Castle. Then experience an 80-year legacy of music and culture at the famed Cabaret Tropicana.

You’ve heard it said about a million places, but for this one it’s true. There is nowhere in the world like Havana, Cuba. Notes of jazz, salsa, and bolero drift onto the cobblestone streets from crumbling facades. Shiny ’57 Chevys and Cadillacs cruise broad avenues past grand estates, long neglected. Contradictions are everywhere you look—a place frozen in time by war, revolution, and embargo, dating back over a century. During the Havana cruise, you’ll see dancers that perform at the Palacio de la Rumba, and vibrant alleyway murals by local artists like Salvador Gonzales. Like clockwork, the smell of freshly-brewed cafecito punctuates the air, ensuring a lively scene near mainstays like Café El Escorial. Enjoy it just like everything else in Havana— sip by sip, all coming together for one amazing step back in time.

Iconic music. Unforgettable sights. Distinct culture. Welcome to Havana, Cuba—a place where yesterday lives today. Ride along the historic Malecón in a classic car guided by a local driver, and experience one of the famed Cabaret Tropicana’s folklore-laden musical extravaganzas.

Food is a cornerstone of the Cuban culture. So, arrive hungry. Must-try dishes include ropa vieja (shredded beef), arroz con moro (Cuban rice and beans), fried plantains, and, of course, flan. Rum is a staple served at virtually every Cuban restaurant, so be sure to wash down your croquetas with a mojito or a Cuba Libre. Hit the Malecón promenade for food stalls serving cheap eats. Many waterfront eateries dish out fresh Caribbean seafood like arroz a la marinera (seafood rice) and grillada mixta (mixed grill) with lobster, fish, and prawns.

Come join us for a great time, cruising with friends and exploring a new land. You must book your cabin directly with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line at 1-800-465-3595 and select

“option 4”. Let the reservation specialist know that you are part of Group #5481367, Atlanta Prime Timers.

Inside Cabins $1,005.38 (per cabin price for 2 persons) Ocean View Cabins $1,205.38 (per cabin price for 2 persons)

Suites may be reserved at the current rates. A $200.00 deposit is required, with final payment due on July 2, 2019.
