In team stats, UTM out-paced the Panthers in kills (40 to 28), attack (.277 to .026), assists (40 to 26), aces (four to two), digs (48 to 44), and blocks (seven to four). The Skyhawks also finished with more service errors at 11, while EIU had just five on the night.

QUICK LOOK AT THE WEEKEND COMPETITION Jacksonville State enters the weekend at 6-14 overall and 4-6 in league play, which is a far different mark then just two years ago when the perennial OVC power won the conference with just one league defeat. Leading the Gamecocks is senior Stephanie Koontz with a team-high 215 kills (2.95 kps), 23 aces and 39 total blocks. She is hitting .275 for the season, while newcomer Nicole Merget owns the best attack with a .322 mark. Three other JSU players also have triple-digit kill totals on the year with junior Hivya Leite at 172, senior Liza Senenkova at 136 and junior Jen Meyer recording 103 kills thus far. The setting duo of sophomore Abbey Heredia and freshman Alina Agamy have 378 and 350 assists to their name, respectively, with Heredia owning the second-toughest serve with 18 aces. Defensively, libero sophomore Kelly Cole sports 291 digs (3.93 dps), while Senenkova has just three less blocks, 36, then Koontz in net defense numbers. The Gamecocks are under the direction of first-year coach Joseph Goodson.

Prior to hosting SIU Edwardville on Friday night, the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech find themselves below the Panthers in the OVC standings with a 2-17 overall record and 1-8 league mark. Leading TTU on the court is sophomore Natalie Penrod with 170 kills (2.83), while she is hitting just .128. Freshman Ellen Conti and junior Kelsey Gray also have over 100 kills on the season, with Conti having nailed 157 and Gray 136. Gray actually leads all Golden Eagles in hitting at a .231 clip.

Junior Madison Comperry has dished out 407 assists (6.36 aps) to lead the offense. The duo of sophomore Allison May and newcomer Courtney Smith own their team’s top serve with 16 and 11 aces, respectively. In defensive numbers, May has 316 digs (4.58), while Gray’s 55 total blocks tops all TTU players at the net. The Golden Eagles are led on the court by long-time coach John Blair.

THE SERIES HISTORY VERSUS JSU & TTU Friday’s match at JSU will mark the 16th meeting between the Panthers and Gamecocks. JSU has owned the all-time series with a current 13-2 lead, which includes having won the last 12 matchups dating back to 2005. The last EIU win over JSU was in 2004 as the Panthers won a four-set affair at the end-of-season OVC Tournament on neutral territory. In fact, since the Gamecocks joined the league in 2003, Eastern has never won a match at JSU’s Mathews Coliseum. Versus TTU, meanwhile, EIU currently enjoys a sizeable 20-14 all-time series lead as the Golden Eagles and Panthers will meet for the 35th time on Saturday afternoon. The two teams split their meetings last season as each unit won at home, while in 2009 the teams each picked up wins on the road.

EIU VOLLEYBALL REUNION WEEKEND RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER As Eastern Illinois celebrates its 30th season of NCAA Division I volleyball this year, the athletic department will be hosting a reunion weekend on October 21-22 as part of the EIU Homecoming festivities.

EDUCATIONPenn State University, 2008

In March of 2010 KATE PRICE was promoted to head volleyball coach at Eastern Illinois following a one-year stint as a Panther assistant. Price became the 10th head coach in EIU volleyball history. Under her leadership, the 2010 squad had the best start to a season in four years enroute to capturing runner-up and third place finishes at early-season Harvard and Michigan State invitatoinals, respectively. Two Panthers earned post-season All-OVC honors, and three different players were tabbed with all-tourney kudos as well. A former senior player on the 2007 NCAA National Championship squad at Penn State, Price became one of the youngest volleyball coaches to currently run an NCAA Division I squad. Prior to arriving in Charleston in 2009, the Michigan native worked as an assistant at Centenary College. In her four seasons at Penn State, Price competed in a variety of positions, which included playing on the right side attack, as defensive specialist and some libero work. Some of her career awards included AVCA Honorable Mention All-Mideast Region, Big Ten ‘Freshman of the Year’, Stanford Invitational ‘Most Valuable Player’, Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team, and Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. In addition to the 2007 NCAA title, the Nittany Lions also captured the Big Ten championship all four years that she was a member of the squad.

All former EIU volleyball student-athletes from any era have been invited to attend this weekend event. The weekend will kick off with the Panthers hosting Tennessee State at 7 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 21). Then on Saturday, a brunch will be held in Lantz Arena at 11 a.m. The brunch will cost $10 per person with each former EIU volleyball student-athlete receiving a complimentary brunch admission. Over the course of the weekend, the athletic department will recognize several teams, including the 1982 squad (first to compete in NCAA Division I), the 1994 Mid-Continent West Division champions, 1998 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champions, 2001 OVC Tournament Champion and NCAA participant, and the 2004 OVC regular-season co-champions. In addition, former Panther standouts will be honored as their name added will be added to three All-Decade Squads -- the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Following the brunch, the EIU football team will host UT Martin at 1:30 p.m. at O’Brien Field. Volleyball reunion attendees and their guests can receive tickets at a special discounted rate with advance purchase. The reunion will conclude with the match at 6 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 22) night against defending OVC Tourney champion Austin Peay in Lantz Arena. At intermission between sets two and three, EIU will recognize all the returning volleyball alumni on the court for their contributions to EIU volleyball. For more information contact Mary Wallace, EIU Associate Athletic Director/SWA at [email protected] or (217) 581-2310. Attendees may also register online by visiting the volleyball website at www.EIUpanthers.com.

A DOUBLE-DOUBLE THREAT Three Panther outside hitters and two setters have all tallied double-doubles this season for the Panthers. The duo of Reynae Hutchinson and Katie Kirby have five and four duo-duo honors in 2011, respectively, with Hutchinson recently notching 13 kills and 12 digs at Southeast Missouri on Tuesday, marking her eighth career performance. For Kirby, the newcomer last had 14 kills and 10 digs as the Panthers defeated Austin Peay on the road for the most recent victory. Junior Emily Franklin, meanwhile, earned her second Panther double-double with 18 kills and 17 digs versus Eastern Kentucky. Freshman Jill Johnson earned her second assist-dig double-double against SEMO, while senior Chrissie Albers has three assist-dig duo-duos. Johnson registered a season-high 54 assists in the Panthers’ crucial come-from-behind five-set thriller over SIU Edwardsville last month, as Albers recently recorded 24 assists and 10 digs in the three-set loss at UT Martin last weekend.

KIRBY & FRANKLIN EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS Thus far this year, junior Emily Franklin has twice represented the Panthers on the respective Louisville and Indiana All-Tourney squads, while newcomer Katie Kirby earned the same honor at the season-opening Indiana State Classic team.

ALBERS & HUTCHINSON EARN PRESEASON HONORS For the first time in three years, EIU had two players earn a sport on the Preseason All-OVC team as senior setter Chrissie Albers and sophomore outside hitter Reynae Hutchinson were each honored by the league office. A native of Springfield, Albers was the lone setter to be named to the 14-member preseason squad. Last season, she led the entire OVC in assists with her 11.08 assist-per-set average tying as the fourth best single-season mark by a Panther in school history. Hutchinson, from nearby Mattoon, returns following a standout freshman season last fall where she finished with 237 kills (2.72 kps) off a .201 attack mark to be named to the OVC All-Newcomer squad. Also, at one point in the season Hutchinson actually led the entire league for attackers by sporting the top kills-per-set mark.

2011 STATISTICAL MATCH ACCOLADES (2011 Season / Career)

PANTHERS PROJECTED TO FINISH SEVENTH IN OVC PLAY As voted on by the league head coaches and sports information directors last July, Morehead State was tabbed as the team to beat in the OVC for the second consecutive season. MSU was followed closely by 2010 tourney champion APSU, off the Lady Govs’ five first place votes. Via three top votes, JSU was picked to finish third, while TTU earned the final first place vote and potential fourth place finish ranking. Meanwhile EKU and Murray State are slated to finish just ahead of the Panthers’ seventh place rank. TSU, SEMO, UTM and league newcomer SIUE rounded out the poll off their expected eighth to 11th place finish, respectively. This season, SIUE is ineligible for post-season play as the are still in the process of moving to the NCAA Division I level. Starting next fall, the Cougars will be eligible to compete in the OVC tourney.
