Roofing Need.

Many important questions must beanswered before selecting the type of roof-ing system and the proper roofing materialsfor any given project. What are the climaticconditions? Is reflectivity an important consideration? Could wind uplift be a problem? To what type of roof decking willthe system be applied? What is the roof’sslope? What thermal efficiency is required? What fire rating is necessary? What is thedesired life expectancy for the roofing sys-tem? What type of guarantee is needed? And, of course, how much can the ownerafford to invest in the roofing system?Whatever the answers, you can count onJohns Manville to provide the mostadvanced and comprehensive solution.

As a part of the Berkshire Hathaway group of companies, Johns Manville has theresources to continually outpace our com-petitors in developing state-of-the-art roofingsystems. While our customers are being

SBS Modified Bitumen SystemsJohns Manville has been producing qualitySBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) productssince 1986. SBS products are comprised of areinforcement of either fiber glass, polyesteror a combination of both. SBS is a rubber-ized modifier that increases the overall per-formance of the sheet by providing superiorelongation and recovery characteristics.

SBS modifiers extend the service range ofthe product so it can be handled in coolertemperatures without cracking or shattering,or in warmer temperatures without soften-ing to the point where it begins to flow. In allinstances, high performance prevails.

Reinforcements also play a key role in performance. Since the inception of modifiedbitumen products, several reinforcementshave entered into the JM SBS line, each targeting specific performance needs.

Fiber glass reinforcements offer tensilestrength and dimensional stability requiredfor rooftops with heavy traffic areas.

Polyester mats deliver superior tear strengthand puncture resistance, and can handlecontinual stress created by rooftop movement.

For ultimate tensile strength, dimensionalstability and puncture resistance, JM offers acomposite reinforcement that combines thestrength of fiber glass with the flexibility ofpolyester. It provides durability and affordsbetter natural resistance to other factors thataffect roof performance.

APP Modified Bitumen SystemsLike our SBS products, our APP modifiedbitumen products provide high-tensilestrength while maintaining critical flexibility. However, through the scientifically advancedformulation, our APP membranes (coatedwith a proprietary blend of asphalt and atactic polypropylene) are more compatiblewith heat-welding application methods.

With APP, hot mopping is no longer necessary, because the bottom coating maybe heated to a point where it acts as its ownadhesive, bonding the sheet to a substrateand bonding the overlapping edges. Whileall our APP membranes are designed to beheat-welded, some may also be applied incold adhesive. These products have a sandbacking in lieu of the burn-off film oftenfound on the heat-welded products.

Many of the APP membranes have a factory-applied mineral surfacing (available incolors) and do not need further protectionfrom harmful UV rays. However, for variouspurposes, JM also provides smooth-surfacedAPP membranes. These membranes mustsubsequently be protected from UV rays byapplying a compatible roof coating.

Several products are available for varyingdegrees of strength, elasticity and flexibility. The following complete system componentlist shows the ASTM standard that applies toeach membrane. Membranes with brandnames designated “FR” also contain flame-retardant additives.

Built-Up Roofing SystemsConventional bituminous built-up roofing(BUR) membranes have been used effectively for more than 100 years and arestill popular today. With BUR roofing sys-tems, the waterproof membrane is field fab-ricated with layers of bitumen alternatingwith plies of reinforcing felts. JM manufac-tures a complete line of fiber glass feltsincluding base, ply and granule-surfaced capsheets.

Base Felts are available in three major types. The most popular and versatile base sheet isPermaPly® 28. Another type of base sheet, which incorporates a coating of rubber-mod-ified asphalt, is called GlasBase PlusTM. Alsoavailable is Ventsulation® Felt, which is primarily used as a venting base sheet forapplying a new built-up roof over an existingbituminous membrane that is no longerserviceable, or over lightweight insulatingconcrete substrates. Check the complete listof BUR system components to see which isbest suited for your use.

Ply felts are coated with high-grade, unfilledasphalt. Two types are available dependingon the ASTM Standard that needs to be met:GlasPly® Premier, with stronger tensilestrength and GlasPly® IV.

Cap sheets are fiber glass mats coated withfilled asphalt and surfaced with mineralgranules for applications where a granule-surfaced sheet is preferred rather thanadding a coating or gravel. GlasKap® CR is awhite mineral surfaced, white acrylic coated, fiber glass cap sheet for use in built-up roof-ing systems. The unique surfacing providesprotection to the underlying asphalt andmembrane, as well as the benefit of a reflec-tive, emissive surface that meets California

Title 24. GlasKap® and GlasKap® Plus are theother two products available.

Of course, various cements, coatings andsurfacings are available for a complete, single-source system. JM-approved asphaltis required for hot-applied BUR systems.
