With a enthusiastic clang of the bell, President Carol Riley brought the meeting to order at 12:15 and got the meeting underway. She expressed her thanks for opportunity to be President.

PP Dave Livingston provided the day’s inspiration. On the anniversary of 09.11, Dave provided a reminder to be thankful for those around you.

PP Stephen Morgan was called upon to lead to club in the pledge.

Keeping the show rolling, PP Stephen Morgan introduced the club to guests. We welcomed ‘guest’ Peter Ehrhorn. Good to see you again Peter!

Gale Warshawsky took up Song Leader duties for the day and led a lively chorus of ‘Welcome to Rotary’ to our 4 Shell Lei Guests. President Elect Paul McGillycuddy had our guests provide a little information about themselves.

Tony Gedeon hopped to action when a volunteer was needed for Aloha Bucket, and comfortably made the rounds in the club. Gale provided update about Sylvia Makk. PP Sally Blanchard mentioned how Jay Blanchard attended school in New Orleans, which is where a few of our shell lei guests are from. Dave Livingston gave advice about being married to an Italian (just obey and say yes b/c they have knives). Dave turned it a bit more serious and spoke about Polio, and generously donated $100 to Foundation. Kathryn Henski threw a few bucks into the pot as well. Dick Matti threw in couple dollars thanking the scribe. Tony Gedeon shared how Peter Ehrhorn served so long as Sgt at Arms, he was promoted to ‘General at Arms.’ Carol gave $5 to polio.

The lovely Ms. Magda stepped forward to conduct her monthly duty of announcing Birthdays and Anniversaries. Members celebrating birthdays include Richard Fikani, Alvin Goo, Kathy Higa, Cindy Lewellen-Tagavilla, Stephen Morgan and Phil Sammer. Anniversary celebrators include Gene Gelfo, Adrienne King, Flora Lu and Janet Scheffer. Only PP Stephen Morgan and Kathy Higa were in attendance, and the club join together in song for them.

PP Sally Blanchard and PP Glenn Perry provided a Foundation update and presented a gift to Eva Lau for her generous contributions to the club and to the Rotary Foundation. Duan Doran? Gene Grounds, Chad Adams, Bob Tellander, Glenn Perry, Ikko Tomita have made recent donations.

There were a handful of announcements today. 1) Membership. President from Ala Moana club reached out to President Carol about the ‘Young at Heart’ event to be held at the Blaisdell Center on Sept 20, 21, and 22nd. If anyone is interested in participating, please let Carol know. 2) October 24th is World Polio Day. Karaoke event is planned. 3) International Conference. Not many people from Hawaii have signed up. If any club gets over 50% of members to sign up, a generous Rotarian will donate $500 to the Host Organizing Committee. 4) Food Fest update. No physical tickets will be issued this year. Please inform Linda how many people will be attending. 5) PDG Roy King came forward to speak about changes to the Rotary Constitution, such as 2 weeks extra to find Sgt at Arms, Treasurer will provide 2 updates each year. Put motions to a vote and they passed unanimously.

Gene Grounds introduced our speaker for the day. Paul Hadik has been connected to Micronesia for well over 30 years now. While originally a teacher on Hawaii’s Big Island in the 80’s, an influx of 25 students from Micronesia piqued his interest to the point that he ended up moving there for 25 years.

The crux of the talk involved the relationship between the US and Micronesia, and some of the challenges that have emerged from this partnership. With a history that extends back to Nuclear Testing in the Marshall Islands during World War II, the US realized there is a significant strategic geographic ‘footprint’ covering nearly 3 million square miles. The US and Micronesia signed the Compact of Free Association (COFA), treaty between US and Republic of the Marshall Islands Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau. Benefits to the US include access to these islands for military reasons. Benefits to the islanders included ‘open borders’ to come to the US to live and work.

This has caused a large influx of people from Micronesia to Hawaii. While mostly well-intentioned and simply looking for a better life, many of the individuals coming to the States struggle with assimilation. The people from Micronesia The Compact will partially end in 2020, meaning money and benefits to Micronesia will stop. Paul thinks this will lead to the ‘micro wave’ of Micronesians coming to Hawaii. How can we help? 1) Education. Older kids being encouraged to be homeschooled, when perhaps they should be required to stay in the system and get baseline skills. 2) Health issues. Many people from the Islands of Micronesia have notoriously poor diets, which has led to a severe increase in diabetes. Estimated cost to State of Hawaii = $175 million/year. 3)

Assimilating. Coming from a place where everyone knows you to a place where no one knows you. Paul provided an example of not being able to rent an apartment due to no credit history. So, what can we do? We should start some targeted programs, such as helping with credit, jobs, getting immunizations, etc. Yearlong program to learn some basics to assist with transition. The presentation generated substantial discussion. Thank you for the educational presentation Paul!

Lucky Number Drawing – Victoria was the lucky number ticket holder, but no big bucks. Enjoy the watch Victoria!

President Carol led us in the 4 way test and brought the meeting to a close a few minutes late due to all the questions. See you next week everyone!

WEEKLY REPORT — WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

Tunisian Interactors win 2018 Interact Video Awards

When members of the Interact Club of Tunis Inner City, Tunisia, set out to make a video about their club, they focused on the many projects that have kept club members busy and engaged throughout their city.

“The key message was to show that a group of teenagers can have an impact on their community,” says Fatma Choura, the club’s adviser and member of the Rotary Club of Radès, Tunisia. “They wanted to encourage other young people to become active and serve their communities.”

The two-minute video was selected as best in the 2018 Interact Video Awards, earning the club $1,000 to spend on a future project. Videos from the Interact Clubs of Alexandria East Champions, Egypt; San Salvador Noroeste, El Salvador; and Colegio de Calumpit, Bulacan, Philippines, were named runners-up. A video from the Interact Club of A.V.P. Trust Public School (CBSE) Gandhinagar, Tamil Nadu, India, was voted the 2018 fan favorite in a social media poll. All awardees received a letter from the Rotary International president and have their videos posted on social media.

Choura says the Tunis Inner City club decided to film at the Olympic Stadium in Radès because it’s an impressive backdrop and is located in the city of their sponsor club. The video’s main character, a young woman, passes groups of Interactors who are acting out the club’s five most meaningful projects. The film builds to its main message: “Through enjoying the good and overcoming the bad, we grew together, and we got closer until we became a family — a family aiming for higher goals and achievements and looking forward to making the world a better place.”

Choura says the Interact club is like a family. The members spend a lot of time together, and through team-building and social activities, they’ve developed mutual respect for each other. The Interactors also benefit from the mentoring and support they receive from their sponsor Rotary club.

“We follow them closely because they are, as teens, in a critical phase of their development,” Choura says. “We see each other on a regular basis and we work together, growing as a family.”

PP Janet Scheffer attending the Rotary Zone Institute, Denver. Amazing training, fellowship and leadership training
