Sculpture Tour Salina 2012 to be Unveiled

SculptureTour Salina is an exciting exhibit of outdoor sculptures displayed in downtown Salina. Artists place their sculptures in the program for one year, May through April. All sculptures are promoted for sale to the public. Artists are eligible to win awards for Best of Show and People’s Choice Purchase Award.

The project is administered by the SculptureTour Salina committee, comprised of volunteers from all walks of life that work on this program all year long. The Tour adds artistic pizzazz to historic downtown Salina and helps to grow the economy by making Salina a more attractive tourist destination. As part of an arts-friendly community, the committee is working to make Salina a better place to live, work and play. The generosity of corporate sponsors, site sponsors and the new Friends of SculptureTour Salina make the project possible. The 2012 Charter Sponsors are Long McArthur, Sunflower Bank, Crown Distributors and The Bank of Tescott. For complete sponsor information, go to www.sculpturetoursalina.com.

In 2012, 24 works from across the United States comprise the exhibition. Come join us for their unveiling during the Block Party on Saturday, May 19 (see insert). Then come back throughout the year to enjoy the sculptures, and ultimately cast YOUR vote for the People’s Choice Purchase Award.

Artist Symposium Added!Sculpture Tour Salina is hosting a Sculpture Symposium May 15-18, preceding the

unveiling. Four artists will create stone sculptures right before your eyes. Spillman Plaza 220, South Santa Fe Ave, will be buzzing with activity for four days as world renowned stone sculptor and educator, Glenn Zweygardt leads the symposium. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Born and raised in northwest Kansas, Mr. Zweygardt has been an active sculptor and educator for over 40 years. He received his BFA from Wichita State University and MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD. He was the chair of the Sculpture Department and now serves as emeritus Professor of Sculpture at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred Station, NY. Christine Ehnmann, NY, Rich Bergen and Dee Warren both of Salina, will also be creating stone and mixed media sculptures during that week. All four sculptors have agreed to donate their work to Sculpture Tour Salina.

Mike Hoppock, STS Chairman credits the partnership of two businesses and the four artists for making this happen in Salina. “US Stone Industries, LLC, Saint Marys, KS has donated the native Kansas limestone and Capitol Federal Foundation has awarded a grant to help cover a portion of the cost of our first annual sculpture symposium,” stated Hoppock. “We are excited to have the community meet the artists and learn how they create their art.”

VISIT SALINA

As we plan for the primary travel season, and during National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), it’s a great time to reflect about the tourism industry. What does tourism mean to you? Whether it’s taking a fun trip with the kids, a long weekend with your buddies, or

an international trip with the Chamber, most people think of tourism in terms of taking themselves somewhere. But how often do you think about what tourism brings…to our state, to our community, to our economy?

Quick thoughts:- 2,000+ jobs in the Salina area are related to tourism- 600,000+ visitors plan an overnight stay in Salina hotels each year- Overnight stays generate $20,000,000+ in hotel room revenue in Salina each year- Tourism is a $5.4 BILLION industry in Kansas, creating 148,945 jobs

Let’s follow the money. A family from out of town comes to Salina for a sports event, bringing NEW dollars that were earned in their hometown. They rent hotel rooms (averaging $60-$120 per night), dine in restaurants (multiple meals at a time), and buy fuel and snacks at convenience stores. Between games, they visit the zoo (admission and gift shop purchases), do some shopping or take in a movie or exhibit. Maybe they decide to stay an extra night to see a concert. It doesn’t stop there. Those NEW dollars enable the hotel, restaurant, stores and attractions to purchase from their suppliers -- food companies, linen services, utilities, contractors and others. Those NEW dollars allow them to employ desk clerks, wait staff, cooks, dishwashers, ticket sellers, retail clerks, and managers, creating payrolls within the community. Those employees also buy goods, services, real estate and pay taxes here. The payoff continues, and it all started with NEW dollars brought to our economy through tourism!

SAFECON Takes Flight in SalinaKansas State University Salina will host the National Intercollegiate Flying

Association’s annual Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON), May 14-19. Portions of the event will be held at the Salina Airport Authority’s Building 614, the runway, the Kansas National Guard’s Ekert Hall, and First Covenant Church.

Not only will SAFECON 2012 increase traffic at the airport, it will increase traffic at local businesses, as it will bring nearly 700 competitors, coaches, volunteer judges, and sponsors to Salina for the week. Welcome these visitors to Salina!

Visit Salina will launch a summer promotion during NTTW, May 5-13, 2012, including an exciting contest! Like us on Facebook for those upcoming announcements!
