SUN DEVIL MEN'S HOOPS (8-17/4-9) HITS THE ROAD TO SEATTLE AND PULLMAN

    Thur., Feb. 16 - @Washington 8 p.m. PT/FOX SPORTS NET/620 AM Seattle, Wash.

    Sat., Feb. 18 - @Washington St. 5 p.m. PT/ROOT SPORTS NW/620 AM Pullman, Wash

    ************************************************************************************************************************

SUN DEVILS BACK ON ROAD: Sixth-year Sun Devil coach Herb Sendek and the Arizona State men's hoops

team (8-17; 4-9 in Pac-12) hits the road in Pac-12 play for the nal time in 2011-12 with games at Washington

(Thursday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. PT on FOX Sports Net) and Washington State (Saturday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.

PT on ROOT Sports Northwest). The Sun Devil Network (KTAR 620 AM Saturday) provides the audio with

Tim Healey and former ASU point guard Kyle Dodd on the call. After posting just three 20-win seasons in

the previous 25 seasons, ASU posted three 20-win seasons under 2009-10 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Herb

Sendek in his rst ve years. ASU was 8-22 in Coach Sendek's rst year (2006-2007), but is 88-70 (.557)

in past ve and giving up just 62.1 ppg. in his 188 games as Sun Devil head coach. Last week marked the

    return of 2010-11 All-Pac-10 second-team and rst-team Pac-10 All-Academic performer Trent Lockett, who

battled an ankle injury suffered in the 76-66 win against Oregon State on Jan. 14 and missed six straigh

games. He returned last weekend as ASU beat Utah Thursday but fell to Colorado on Saturday.

NO SENIORS:Of the 338 D-I schools, ASU is one of just nine without a senior. The others: Albany, Bing

hamton, UC Irvine, Illinois St., St. Johns, St. Josephs, Savannah St. and Toledo.

600/350: The Feb. 11 ASU-Colorado game was Coach Sendek's 600th game as a head coach. His rst game

was on Nov. 27, 1993, when the 30-year old mentor led Miami (Ohio) to 108-68 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene

in Oxford. Included on his staff that year were Georgia State head coach Ron Hunter and Arizona head coach

Sean Miller. Coach Sendek also earned his 350th career win on Feb. 9 vs. Utah, as he is the second-younges

active coach with 350 Division I wins. He turns 49 on Feb. 22. Only Billy Donovan (395 career Division I wins

entering this season) who was born on May 30, 1965, is younger in the 350-win category.

LACK OF TRENT HURT: ASU missed Trent Lockett's play for a six-game stretch (Jan. 19-Feb. 4) as he was

sidelined with the ankle injury. The 1-5 record shows that, but here are some other nuggets that point it out..ASU is shooting .469 from the eld in the 19 games he has played, but just .408 without...three-point shoot

ing has tailed off as well, as ASU was at a .284 clip without him but is at .377 with him...ASU outrebounds

opponents by 3.6 boards per game with him, it was outrebounded by 4.1 without him...ASU is averaging 52.2

points per game with him in street clothes and is at 62.8 ppg. with him...defensively ASU held opponents to

.410 from the eld with him, but that digit went up to .462 without...the Golden Valley, Minn., native leads ASU

in scoring (13.6), rebounding (6.3), minutes per game (34.9), eld goals made (86) and three-point percent

age (.447)....and don't stop reading. He also has made (69) and attempted (98) more free throws than any

other Sun Devil, has the third-most assists (42), most steals (29) and is the only Sun Devil with more than

35 career starts (63) and more than 75 games (81).

JORDAN: Sophomore Jordan Bachynski scored a career-high 20 in Feb. 2 game at Stanford, and if you

take a look at the past seven games his improvement is solid as all of his stats compared to the rst 18 games

are off-the-chart good. One area of improvement is free throw shooting. He entered the Stanford Feb. 2 game

20-of-50 (.400) for the season and 40-of-90 (.444) in his career, but was 10-of-12 (.833) in that game.

    COACH SENDEK NOTES...

FREE THOWS: NC State under Herb Sendek

led the nation and set an ACC record for free

throw shooting (.799) in 2003-2004. That mark

is tied for the third-best mark in the nation

in the past 12 seasons with St. Joseph's in

2005-06 and is tied for the ninth-best mark inNCAA history.

POINTS: NC States 74.5 points per game

mark in 2005-2006 would have been third

highest in the Pac-10 last year.

NBA READY: Herb Sendek was one of jus

three coaches who had a NBA rst-round draf

pick in 2005 and 2006. Julius Hodge was the

20th pick of the Denver Nuggets in 2005. Cedric

Simmons was the 15th pick of the New Orleans

    Oklahoma City Hornets in 2006.

HISTORY: Herb Sendek was the rst coach

to knock off the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tour

nament in consecutive years. NC State bea

Maryland (2002) and Wake Forest (2003)

Maryland was ranked second while Wake

    Forest was ninth.

DEFENSE: In Herb Sendeks 10 seasons

NC State led the ACC in scoring defense fou

times and held opponents to just 54.7 points

per game in 1996-97, an ACC record.

FINAL FOURS: Herb Sendek has coached in

two Final Fours (1987 Providence and 1993

    Kentucky).

NCAA SUCCESS: Under Herb Sendek, NC

State was one of only eight teams who won a

    NCAA Tournament game from 2004-06.

THREE: NC State averaged nine threes in

2005-06, best in the ACC and ninth in nation.

YOUNG TALENT: NC State placed seven

players on the All-ACC freshman team unde

Coach Sendek, and James Harden (2007-08

and Trent Lockett (2009-10) have continued

    the trend.

RUSLAN NUMBERS: Junior Ruslan Pateev matched a career-high with 31 minutes vs. Oregon

on Jan. 12 (also had 31 minutes vs. California on Jan. 8, 2011) and matched season-bests with

six rebounds and three assists. Pateev, who entered the season 23-of-42 (.548) from the free

throw line, is 21-of-30 (.700) from the charity stripe this year. In the past 11 games he is shooting

    29-of-45 (.644) from the eld.

ODD: A computer does the league slate and for the fourth straight season, ASU opened playon the road (68-51 loss in Tucson on New Year's Eve). ASU played ve of its rst seven league

games on the road for the third time in four years, and the other year in that span (2009-10) it

played four of rst seven on the road. In its rst seven games in past four seasons, ASU played

19 of its rst 28 conference games on the road.

CAN'T SHOW IT YET: The Sun Devils have two players who have shown the ability to make

three-pointers on the D-I level, but unfortunately both of them have to watch the game in a polo

shirt this year. Evan Gordon, a 6-3 guard, averaged 14.4 points per game as a sophomore at

Liberty last year and made 112 three-pointers in his two-year Flames career. Bo Barnes, a 6-4

wing from Scottsdale Christian in Arizona, averaged 6.9 points per game at Hawaii in 2010-11

and was one of only two players to appear in all 32 games. He made more three-point eld goals

    (57) than any freshman in school history and buried at least ve three pointers in a game on fourseparate occasions. Both will be ready to go in 2012-13, along with top recruit Jahii Carson, a

top-50 signee and top-10 point guard from nearby Mesa, Ariz., who has to sit this year.

CHANSE FOR MORE MINUTES: Sophomore Chanse Creekmur has averaged 29.8 minutes

per game in the past 12 games, as he played career-high 39 vs. Oregon State, 36 vs. Oregon,

a career-high 39 at UCLA (Jan. 7) and 37 at USC (Jan. 5). He had averaged 19.1 minutes in his

rst 12 games of the season. After starting season 4-of-21 (.190) from the three-point stripe he

is 25-of-69 (.362) recently. He had a career-high 24 in the Jan. 14 Oregon State win and also

had 15 vs. Northern Arizona on Dec. 17.

SOME THINGS THAT STAND OUT IN PAC-12 STATS: Freshman Jonathan Gilling is 37-of-94

(.394) from the three-point stripe on the year, which is 12th in overall Pac-12 stats and third

among freshman...Trent Lockett ranks second second in the league in overall games at 34.9

minutes per game while Carrick Felix is sixth at 33.8...Gilling's .397 three-point percentage in

Pac-12 games is 12th-best in the league and third-best by a freshman...his 2.2 made threes per

game (29 in 13 games) is tied for best by a freshman in league games.

SOLID SHOOTING NIGHTS: Coach Sendek has coached for six years in the Pac-10/12 and

has mentored the third-pick in the 2009 NBA Draft (James Harden), the nation's eld goal per-

centage leader in 2009 (Jeff Pendergraph), the Pac-10's eld goal percentage leader in 2010

(Eric Boateng) and the rst player in Sun Devil history with 1,000 points and 500 assists (Derek

Glasser). With none of those players on this roster, ASU has managed to chalk up the second-

and fourth-best shooting nights in his Pac-10/12 tenure. It shot .611 from the oor against USC

on Jan. 5 and then shot .592 vs. Oregon State on Jan. 14.

BEST SHOOTING NIGHTS BY ASU IN PAC-10/12 GAME UNDER COACH SENDEK

    .651/28-43 vs. Oregon State (Jan. 8, 2009)

    .611/22-36 at USC (Jan. 5, 2012)

    .600/24-40 vs. UCLA (Feb.12, 2009)

    .592/29-49 vs. Oregon State (Jan. 14, 2012)

COACH OF YEAR: The Pac-12 has ve current coaches who have earned Pac-10 Coach of the

Year. Herb Sendek earned it in 2009-10, while Sean Miller (2010-11), Lorenzo Romar (2008-09

and 2004-05) and Ben Howland (2005-06) earned kudos at their school. Mike Montgomery did

it four times at Stanford (2003-04, 2002-03, 1999-2000 and 1998-99).

30, 2010. Trent Lockett had seven in just 24 minutes before getting hurt while Chris Colvin had

six in 13 minutes while Carrick Felix added four.

BEST HOOPS S/A IN PAC-12?: Take it all into consideration...he was accepted into Barret

Honors College, CoSIDA District VIII All-Academic pick in 2011-12, second-team All-Pac-10in

    2010-11, rst-team Pac-10 All-Academic pick in 2010-11, two solid seasons....it is hard to not

say Trent Lockett is the best men's hoops student-athlete in the Pac-12. He is only rst-team

Pac-10 All-Academic pick from last year who earned All-Pac-10 honors. He averaged 13.4 points

last year en route to All-Pac-10 second-team honors, and his return means he is one of just

four All-Pac-10 players returning from the 15-man 2010-11 squad. Others are Jorge Gutierrez

(Cal/14.6), Jared Cunningham (Oregon State/14.2) and Harper Kamp (Cal/14.2).

JAN. 14 WIN OVER OSU: ASU posted a season-high 22 assists and got career highs from

sophomore Chanse Creekmur (24 points and 39 minutes) while Kyle Cain posted 16 points

for the rst time in his career in its 76-66 win over Oregon State on Jan. 14...ASU improved to

23-12 against OSU in Tempe since it joined the Pac-10 in 1978-79. It is its most wins in Tempe

against any team...Cain also had career-highs in eld goals made (eight) and attempted (13)

in 24 minutes off the bench...Creekmur had a career-high 24 points (previous high was 18 vs

Washington State on Feb. 18, 2011) including six three-pointers (just seven attempts) as he

was 8-of-9 from the eld...freshman Jonathan Gilling played 34 minutes for the rst time...junio

Trent Lockett matched his career high with four steals despite playing only 24 minutes as he

sprained his ankle and had to leave the game in the second half...ASU shot .592 from the eld

(29-of-49), the fourth-best shooting percentage in a Pac-10/12 game under Coach Sendek..

ASU matched season highs with nine three-pointers, 45 second-half points and got 22 bench

points for the rst time on the year...Coach Sendek is now 8-3 vs. OSU and the series is now

    tied through 78 games.

ODD STREAK:ASU started 4-8 with nine games decided by six points or less (3-6). A Decembe

streak was bizarre, as four straight games between Dec. 10-21 were decided by three points

or less. ASU was 1-3 in that span, and for three straight games the tilt was decided on a three

pointer at under a second. It beat North Dakota State on Dec. 10 60-57 on full-court pass and

three-pointer by Carrick Felix at the buzzer. NAU drained a three with less than a second left on

Dec. 17 to win 69-68, while Southern Miss hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer on Dec. 19. Entering

Pac-12 play, ASU had played seven games of ve points or less on the year (2-5), the other 11

teams in the league combined for 26. ASU had played just two games with a double-digit na

margin, tied for fewest in Pac-12 after non-conference play. Six other Pac-12 teams played at

eight games with double-digit nal margins in non-conference action.

CAIN ABLE AT FREE THROWS: One year ago, freshman Kyle Cain went 11-of-25 (.440) from

the free throw line on the season. On Dec. 10 vs. North Dakota State he almost matched last

year's overall made free throw total in one game as he was 10-of-14 (.714) in the 60-57 win.

As a sophomore he is now 33-of-44 (.750) this year from the charity stripe. He is averaging 5.9

rebounds (5.5 last year) and 8.4 points (5.4 last year). He has two double-doubles this season

with 14 points/13 boards vs. North Dakota State (Dec. 10) and 14 points/10 boards vs. Nevada

(Dec. 7). He posted a career-high 18 points at California on Feb. 4 and had 16 points in Jan

    14 win over Oregon State.

USC JAN. 5 WIN: ASU hit the hardwood on Jan. 5 without two starters (Keala King and Kyle

Cain) and another top reserve (Chris Colvin) and had only six scholarship players available, but

played one of its best road games in recent history with a 62-53 win at USC Jan. 5. It shot .611

from the eld (22-of-36), the best performance in a road game since it shot .612 at USC on Jan.

17, 2004 (previous 84 road games)...junior Carrick Felix had career highs in points (22) and

blocks (four) in 39 minutes...ASU won at Galen Center for the rst time in six tries..sophomore

eld, made all four free throws, knocked down one three-point attempt, had nine boards, four

assists and three steals to end with 19 points...ASU attempted 36 eld goal attempts, its fewest

since it had just 35 on Nov. 18, 2008 at San Diego State. Prior to that you have to go back to

Jan. 27, 1991, when it was 19-of-33 in a 58-47 win at Stanford for an amount less than 35 to

get a grip of how odd that it.

BEST SHOOTING NIGHTS BY ASU UNDER COACH SENDEK: The 25-of-41 (.610) shooting at

Tulsa on Dec. 3 was the best shooting night in a road tilt since a Jan. 17, 2004 clinic at USC, but

ASU topped that on Jan. 5 this year with a 22-of-36 (.611) at USC, its best shooting performance

in a road game in 84 road games. ASU also shot 32-of-54 (.593) vs. Wake Forest in Orlando. Themarks are the best since it shot .613 vs. San Francisco on Nov. 20, 2009. Of the top 11 shooting

games for ASU since Coach Sendek took over, four of them have happened this season.

THIS ISN'T NORMAL: ASU is averaging a Pac-12 high 16.8 turnovers per game, and that is

unusual for a Coach Sendek team. ASU nished tied for second in the Pac-10 in fewest turnovers

per game at 12.2 last year (USC was best at 11.4) and averaged 11.6 turnovers in nal 15 games.

It averaged 11.9 in 2009-10 (rst in the league). ASU took a step vs. Tulsa as it had just 14 for

the victory. It had a season-low 10 vs. Fresno State, but Fresno committed just nine. The Sun

Devils forced a season-high 18 turnovers vs. Washington State on Jan. 28, and also had less

fourth-youngest coach in the Pac-12. Only

Duke posted more ACC wins (regular season

and ACC Tournament) than NC State's 53 from

in 1978-79, only six coaches have coached

at their schools for at least 10 years: Lute

HERB SENDEK COACHING TREE TOPS IN THE NATION

Herb Sendek earned his rst head coaching job at age 30 at Miami of Ohio, which has al-

lowed him to compile the best list of former assistant coaches turned current D-I head coaches

in the nation. Currently there are nine former Coach Sendek assistants leading programs.

The latest addition to the list is Dayton's Archie Miller, who spent three seasons on Coach

Sendek's staff at ASU (2006-07) and North Carolina State (2004-06), the last two years as a

full-time assistant. In 2004-05, Miller was the Wolfpack's director of basketball operations. Ineach of his nal two years in Raleigh, NCSU won more than 20 games and advanced to the

NCAA Tournament. His coaching career began at N.C. State in 2002-03, where he lled the role

    of intern under Sendek.

Prior to that was 12-year sidekick Mark Phelps, who earned the Drake spot in the spring of

2008 after serving for 10 years on the staff at NC State and for two years at ASU. Former NC

State sidekick John Groce also earned the Ohio University position in the spring of 2008.

The others are Jim Christian, formerly at Kent State and now at TCU (Miami assistant from

1994-96), Charlie Coles at Miami of Ohio (Miami assistant from 1994-96), Larry Hunter at West-

ern Carolina (NC State assistant from 2001-05), Ron Hunter of Georgia State (Miami assistant
