Gemstones in Jyotish I

Prescription of %emstone is one of the most important aspects of remedies

in Jyotish Shastra. The use of %emstone is also endorsed 'y shastras such

as %aruda Purana which gives ela'orate description of the nature of the

gemstones and their use. -ven though gemstone use is one of the most

popular source of remedies for all ills of the material world$ may it 'e health$wealth or fortune$ it is fraught with many misconceptions and erroneous

notions of their selection and prescription. This article envisages providing

consistent principles which would help the Jyotishas and laymen to select the

right gemstones.

GEMSTONES OF YOGAKARAKAS

Since the gemstones enhance the influence of the planet in the life of the

person$ the gemstones for the planets giving yogas should always 'e

chosen. To now the yoga givers or the yoga/araas in a horoscope$studying classics such as 0rhat Parashara 1ora shastra should 'e studied.

1owever$ I shall provide here some guidelines which can help in choosing the

gemstones.

2agna lord is the first and foremost yoga araa in a horoscope$ since is the

owner of 'oth 3endra (4uadrant and 3ona (Trine. 1e is protector of the

2agna$ which represent health$ vitality and the controller of the whole

horoscope. The placement of the 2agna lord is extremely important for the

overall strength of the horoscope and its gemstone can help a person

overcoming all difficulties in life.

The lords of two trines fifth and ninth are equally important. They are the

two important houses which control the financial well'eing of a person. If

they are 'adly placed in the horoscope$ then the person might suffer

financially in life. Thus their strength is extremely important in addition to

the lords of second and eleventh$ who signify 5ealth and Income.

-ach planet can give results on the following 'asis.

). 2ordship

*. Placement

. 6atural 3araatva (Significations

,. 7oga (-xchange$ Con"unction$ 8spects

1ence it must 'e remem'ered that a good planet (lords of 2agna$ 9th and

:th ; 7oga/ araa if placed in a dusthana (<th ; =th; )*th$ they can also

give malefic results in addition to their inherent 'enefic nature to do good.

Similarly if the yogaaraas are involved in other 'ad yogas$ they can give

'ad results$ while their gemstones are worn. 5henever there is a

con"unction or exchange of two planets$ their inherent and functional nature

is greatly modified. 5hen a 'enefic planet comes into association with a

malefic planet$ then the 'enefic nature of the planet is corrupted and itstarts giving malefic results$ however the malefic planet gains out of the

company and gives good results. Such su'tle effects should always 'e ept

into consideration$ while suggesting a gemstone for Jyotish remedial

purposes.

-xception to this is that$ if Saturn 'ecomes the 7oga/araa and is placed in

a dusthana$ then its a'ility to do good increases. It is advisa'le to wear

6eelam$ Saturn>s stone for such cases.

GEMSTONE OF WEAK PLANET

If a yoga/araa (or any good planet in the horoscope$ lords of any houses

other than <th; =th or )*th is de'ilitated$ they must 'e strengthened. &ne

of the ways is to wear the stone of the de'ilitated planet. 1owever$ the more

effective way is to find the planet who is causing neecha/'hanga to the

de'ilitated planet. If the neecha/'hanga is happening with respect to the

?oon$ then ?antra would 'e a good remedy$ however$ if it happens with

respect to the 2agna$ then wearing the gemstone of the planet causing the

neecha/'hanga would mae the de'ilitated planet come out of the state of

de'ilitation.

5hen there is no cancellation of weaness of other weanesses then the

gemstones for the supporters of the de'ilitated planet can 'e prescri'ed for

causing cancellation of de'ility or for enhancing the life/forces that are 'eing

destroyed due to the de'ility. @or example$ the ?oon is wea in Scorpio (=th

house of natural Aodiac and is said to 'e ?8#868 38#838 if placed in the

=th house from 2agna. 5eaness of such ?oon$ in any chart is not good for

Page 3: Astrology in Short

longevity. 1ence a 'lue sapphire is used for enhancing the life/force. The

information regarding this is given at the detail section for each planet and

their gemstones

It must 'e noted that de'ilitation of some planets are desira'le in ahoroscope. They are the lords of the Busthanas (<th; =th; )*th. If the lords

of the Busthanas are placed in other Busthanas in de'ilitation$ then it

confers ipareeta ra"a yoga$ where'y the native gains due to the loss of

natural and functional significations of the planet causing the yoga. @or

example$ if =th lord ?oon is involved in ipareeta #a"a yoga$ 'y its

de'ilitation in the )*th house$ the native might en"oy rise in life$ 'ut the

?other (natural signification of ?oon and the marriage (=th house is the

longevity of marriage might suffer simultaneously. To en"oy the fruits of

ipareeta #a"a yoga$ the native must not strengthen such de'ilitated planets

that confer the yoga.

VIPAREETA RATNA (OPPOSITE GEMSTONE

ipareeta means opposite or gemstones used for weaening the effects of

some planets in certain houses. If any house is occupied 'y an enemy of its

3araa$ then the significations of the house suffer. 3eeping this principle in

view$ the first house to 'e checed in any chart is the ninth house of fortune

and Bharma with Jupiter ! Sun as the significator. #ahu and Saturn are the

enemies of these significator and if they are placed in the ninth house$ they

shall damage fortune and Bharma. The remedy is to strengthen the

concerned 3araa 'y wearing its gemstone in the ring finger. Sua 6adi

states that if #ahu is in the ninth house$ then the native has good fortune

after wearing a TopaA. The same principle of ipareeta #atna (&pposite

%emstone has 'een used here. #ahu is the enemy of Jupiter and since it is

placed in the ninth house$ the use of a TopaA (gemstone of Jupiter removes

the misfortune caused 'y #ahu. Similarly$ if Saturn is in the ninth house$

then the person may suffer from poverty; failure in the homeland after <

years. To remove this evil$ a ru'y$ the gemstone of the Sun (Saturn>s

enemy is worn.

GEMSTONES VS! "ASAS

1ands in which the gemstones are worn to 'e chosen on the 'asis of certain

criteria. The right hand is ruled Jupiter and the left hand 'y enus indicating

increase (right hand or decrease (lift hand of life force.

Page 4: Astrology in Short

7/23/2019 Astrology in Short

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/astrology-in-short 4/54

Thus$ if gemstones have to 'e prescri'ed to decrease the evil effects of a

malefic planet$ its gemstone should 'e used in the left hand. Such use

should 'e temporary covering the dasa/'huti of the planet.

5hen the planet is a malefic for the horoscope$ the maleficence of the planetcan 'e reduced 'y wearing a counter gemstone temporarily during the Basa/

'huti of the planet. If instead a gem is to 'e worn for the main Basa planet

itself$ then it should 'e worn in the left hand. @or example$ if #ahu is malefic

then during its period a 7ellow Sapphire;TopaA;Citrine can 'e worn in the

right hand ring finger or 1essonite;0rown Tourmaline etc can 'e worn in the

left hand middle finger.

FLAWE" GEMSTONE

8 genuine gemstone of good quality should never 'e used with an imperfect

or flawed gem or with one that is astrologically incompati'le with it. Suta

%oswami (%aruda Purana advises Dnot to wear a gem that is of inferior

quality or incompati'le even if it is set together with the divine 3austhu'a

?ani of ishnu. Just as the 'est of saints lose their merits 'y 'ad company$

similarly$ an imperfect;inferior or incompati'le gemstone can ruin the

'eneficence of other good gems.

GEMSTONES AN" LAGNA LOR"

@or determining compati'ility of gemstones most astrologers go 'y the6aisargia Sam'andha (natural relationship of other planets with the stone

of the principal;ruling planet. The #uling Planet is the strongest one in trines

to the 2agna or in the seventh house ()$9$E ! : houses$ and if none are

there$ then the 2agna lord is chosen. Thus if the ruling planet is the ?oon$

then all planets are compati'le with it$ 'ut if it is the Sun$ then only Jupiter$

?ars ! ?oon are compati'le and their stones can 'e chosen.

Since the 2agna is the controller of the 1oroscope$ the impact of the

%emstone ultimately falls on the 2agna (more so$ since 2agna is the

controller of the physical 'ody$ where the gemstone is worn. The planets$whose gemstone is worn$ should 'e a friend to the 2agna lord as per the

naisargia sam'andha. If any planet is inimical to the lord of 2agna$ the use

of its gemstone can damage ; endanger the concerned people related to the

house owned 'y the planet. @or example if the lord of the fifth house is

inimical to the 2agna lord$ then the use of a gemstone of the fifth lord can

endanger the life children. 1ence utmost caution should 'e used in

Page 5: Astrology in Short

prescri'ing gemstones.

Naisar#i$a Sam%an&ha o' Panets

Some astrologers also use Tatalia Sam'andha (Current relationship

'etween planets in a chart as this also taes the individual horoscope into

focus. 1ere$ the planets that are Param ?itra$ ?itra or Sama to the ruling

planet are chosen for supportive gemstones.

8mong all the methods of "udging the suita'ility of a %emstone namely$ the

naisargia sam'andha$ tatalia sam'andha and other sam'andha$ the 'est

and most 'eneficial gemstones are those of the planets involved in a

'eneficial 7oga. If the tenth and ninth lord are involved in a Bharma/

3armadhipati 7oga$ then their stones should 'e used together to augment

the effects of the 7oga. %emstones of planets involved in Buryoga and other

malefic com'inations or where 'enefits accrue if the planets are wea and

afflicted lie the ipareeta #a"yoga$ should never 'e used.

GEMSTONES OF M)T)ALLY INIMI*AL PLANETS

%emstones of mutually inimical planets should never 'e used simultaneously

as they shall prove to 'e very adverse. ?any astrologers give gemstones of

mutually inimical planets such as 1essonite (#ahu with #u'y (Sun or

7ellow Sapphire (Jupiter or #ed Coral (?ars. Such com'inations can 'e

extremely dangerous for the native. The natural fight 'etween the owners of

the gemstones can 'e visi'le in the life of native$ where we can witnessF the

native is caught 'etween many undesira'le circumstances without his fault.

The ta'le shown 'elow shows the natural relationships 'etween the planets.

FINGERS AN" GEMSTONES

The index finger is called Tar"ani and is considered very inauspicious. In

mantra recitation the 'eads should never touch this finger$ even while

turning the rosary (when we finish one circle of )+= 'eads. It rules the

D8hamaraG and is the finger of DfallG or expression of anger. The %yana

?udra has all fingers except this index finger stretched out with the index

Page 6: Astrology in Short

finger (of anger 'eing in touch with and controlled 'y the 8asha Tattva of

the Thum'. 6ormally for people who are spiritual ; worship their %uru$

gemstones should not 'e used in this finger. Some astrologers prescri'e

#u'y ; 7ellow Sapphire for Power ; 5ealth respectively$ for use in the index

finger. 1owever these gemstones have 'een found to give 'etter results of

sta'le power and gradual sta'le growth in finance in the ring finger.

Tat+a in Pamistry

The gemstone of a planet placed in a house should 'e worn according to thequadrant (3endra house is whose trines it is placed. Thus a planet in the

ninth house influences the Bharma Triona and its gemstone should 'e worn

in the ring finger. %emstones of planets in ?osha Triona (,$ =$ )* should

not 'e prescri'ed as then they would 'e worn in the Tar"ani (Index finger.

Instead mantra of these planets should 'e advised.

@urther gemstone cannot 'e worn in the finger of inimical elements. @or

example$ if a #ed Coral is to 'e worn for ?ars placed in the seventh house$

this cannot 'e prescri'ed for the little finger due to ?ars ruling 8gni Tattva

(fire element$ which is opposed to the ayu Tattva (8ir element. Thus aCoral can only 'e worn in the ring finger (8gni Tattva ; @ire or middle finger

(Prithvi Tattva ; -arth. Just as the thum' is different from the other four

fingers and in con"unction with them does all wor$ the 8asha Tattva (-ther

elementHsym'oliAed 'y the Thum' permeates all signs of the other

elements and is the driving force ; Bhi Shati.

GEMSTONES AN" AR)",A LAGNA

Since the gemstones are taen for fulfilling the material pursuits in the life

than anything else$ the arudha lagna plays a very vital role in selection ofthe gemstones. 8rudha 2agna shows the image in this world or in other

words$ the perception of the world related to the native. This is the material

manifestation of the existantial reality of a person. ?aharishi parashara says

that planets in the twelfth of 8rudha 2agna (82 can show the sources of

expenditure$ while that in the ))th from the 82 show the sources of Income.

-ven though the promise of the wealth can 'e seen from different dhana

Page 7: Astrology in Short

yogas in the horoscope and the strength of the *nd$ ))th and the trines$ the

sources and the quantum of the gains or losses can 'e seen from the

8rudha.

Thus$ it is very important to consider the placement of Planets with respectto the 8rudha 2agna for final selection of an %emstone. The following

guidelines can help in such "udgement

). If a planet is placed in or aspecting the )*th from the 8rudha 2agna$ the

gemstone for such planet can increase the expenditure of the native.

?alefics are well placed here as it confer ra"ayoga while placed here in

addition to the expenses shown. 1owever one must remem'er that planets

placed here shows the persons who would secretly oppose the native in

various activities. So the gemstones of such planets to 'e chosen aftercareful consideration of all factors involved.

*. The gemstone of a planet placed in or aspecting the ))th from 8rudha

2agna shall give income from the sources indicated 'y the planet. The

sources can 'e nown 'y "udging 'oth the functional as well as natural

significations of the concerned planet.

. The *nd and Eth house from the 8rudha 2agna are the houses of

sustainance of the Image. They should 'e occupied 'y 'enefics or exaltedplanets. If they are occupied 'y malefics$ the gemstones of such planets can

cause fall of image and trou'les in career and various other trou'les. In

addition the planets in the Eth from 8rudha lagna shows the persons who

would openly oppose the person in various activities$ and this is more true

with respect to the ?alefics. Thus if 'enefics are placed in the Eth from the

8rudha 2agna$ their gemstones can 'e given$ provided the native can

withstand the opposition shown 'y the concerned planet.

,. The planets in the 8rudha 2agna shows how the world perceives thenative. The presence of ?oon or Jupiter in the 8rudha 2agna gives long

lasting fame. They should otherwise 'e placed with 'enefics or exalted

planets and gemstones of such ?oon$ Jupiter$ 'enefics or exalted planets can

'e 'eneficial to the native$ otherwise it can 'e harmful.

Similarly the lord of the 8rudha 2agna should ideally 'e well placed in either

Page 8: Astrology in Short

exaltation$ mulatriona$ own house or friends house. If gemstone of such

planets is worn$ it would 'enefit the native 'y uplifting his image. If such

planet is in fall or unfavoura'ly placed$ then the gemstone of the planet$

countering the evil has to 'e worn (please refer to relevant section for more

information on this

9. ?alefics in the rd or <th gives material success whereas 'enefics in these

places maes the person spiritual$ unless they are de'ilitated. Thus wearing

the gemstones of the malefics placed in rd or <th can help in fulfilment of

o'"ectives and gaining over all odds. 1owever$ malefics in the rd from 82

can 'e detrimental to the health and longevity$ thus while prescri'ing the

gemstones$ one need to consider this factor as well.

<. The eighth house is also very crucial in a way that it controls the longevityof the person. ?alefics placed over there can harm the health of the person

and also the image. Stones of such malefics placed there should never 'e

worn.

E. 8ll planets either 'e 'enefics or malefics give good results and financial

gains while placed in the :th house from the arudha 2agna. nless any other

adverse yogas exist$ gemstone of such planet would 'e 'eneficial to the

native.

=. )+th house shows the impact of a planet in the nativeKs career. 0enefics

are 'est suited here and malefics are prohi'ited. @or example$ if Saturn is

placed in such )+th$ then the career 'ecomes a 'ed of thorne for the

native.

The ,th 'hava indicates mother$ motherland$ relatives$ property$ vehicles

and other conveyances$ peace of mind$ prosperity of self$ heart$ formal

education$ general happiness$ home and happiness.

The ,th house$ along with the )st$ Eth and )+th houses$ is one of the four

quadrants or angles and it happens to 'e one of the pillars of a personKs

chart. The first is the lagna or 'irth$ while the Eth is the descendent of the

lagna where the person comes down to the 'asics of desire. The )+th is the

sy$ where one clim's according to arma$ while ,th is the nadir / KpatalK /

where one finds himself after the fall from the sy (arma. Thus$ the

quadrants are very important houses of the horoscope.

The ,th is a very vital house inasmuch as it deals with oneKs mother and

general happiness of life. The child$ in its initial years of life$ is fully underthe protective cover of the mother. It is mother who understands everything

related to the child. It is she who provides her child food$ shelter$ and succor

to life. The child also loos for the mother whenever it feels hungry or

insecure. 5hen man falls from the heights of glory (the )+th / arma'hava

no'ody except his mother who still wishes the very 'est for him and

provides him the succor. The mother protects even unruly and sinful

children. Such is the 'lind$ un'iased and true love of mother for the child.

2ord 3rishna has therefore rightly called L?atru'hava BevtaL meaning the

mother / child relationship to 'e a relationship 'etween the individual and

%od. Therefore$ the ,th 'hava$ in the form of motherKs love and relationship$esta'lishes the love for %od. It is the 2ord who helps us at the weaest time

lie the mother who helps the child when it is most vulnera'le. Sri 8di

Shanara has$ therefore$ said that$ motherKs 'lessing was of vital importance

for the attainment of mosha. 1e said L%atistvam gatistvam tvamea

'havaniL. It is the 'lessings of mother that actually provides one the speed

(gati in the direction and desire for setting out on the path for spiritualism.

It is also 'ecause mother (also %od is the one who provides KashrayaK /

shelter / to the person that we see the acquisition of landed property and

house(s 'oth in the native land and elsewhere$ including foreign lands$ from

the ,th house. Placement of the lord of ,th in =th would indicate acquisition

of property in other places$ while its placement in )*th would mean

acquisition of property in foreign lands.

It also indicates anything that is im'i'ed or received from the mother. The

first language that we spea / our mother tongue isF the place where we are

'orn / motherlandF the love for our culture and motherland is also to 'e

seen from the ,th house. 8ny inimical or papa graha in the ,th affects to

that extent the sym'oliAation of the ,th house.

The ,th also rules the heart. 8fter all$ love / true love / is possi'le only ifthere is a heart (conscious mind to do so. True is nothing 'ut pursuit of the

loved one with heart and soul. 8ny 'enevolence or arrogance of the personKs

heart$ whether a person is good or 'ad at heart$ is to 'e seen from the

strength and placement of the ,th house$ its lord and other grahas in it.

Placement of #ahu could give a hard;stout heart. It could also indicate heart

disease;afflictions to heart depending on its placement etc.$ while placement

of a 'enefic lie enus could indicate passionate love and a very ind

mother. Thus$ afflictions to the heart$ 'oth physical and emotional$ are to 'e

seen from the ,th house. Thus$ the ,th also 'ecomes the house of happiness

and grief. 6o afflictions or good placements could give a general sense ofattainment of happiness and less emotional strains. This esta'lishes a clear

connection 'etween the heart (,th and the mind ()st. The general sense of

happiness prevails only when the desires are fulfilled.

The ,th house also deals with formal education. It indicates the extent and

type of formal education that one would get in life. It indicates the school$

college or institution$ the length till which one will have formal education.

5hile presence of #ahu in the ,th will also indicate general defiance in

studies and distur'ances to mother etc.$ it would also indicate an inclination

and even good control over foreign languages / something which isuncommon to the native.

8ll modes of conveyances$ of course / with the sam'andha of enus who is

the naisargia araa for vehicles;conveyances$ is to 'e studied and

predicted from the ,th hosue. 5hile presence or aspect of enus on the ,th

would mean attainment and en"oyment of material pleasures of all good

Page 20: Astrology in Short

things of life$ presence of aspect of grahas lie #ahu$ 3etu$ Sani would mean

denial or destruction of the pleasures of the world resulting in lac of general

happiness. Thus we may say that the results indicated 'y any graha in the

,th fructify fast$ while that of those in the )st or Eth will 'e felt only in the

later part of life.

The general sense of happiness to an individual comes only when the

acquisitions are self/made. Though we now the need and importance of

arma ()+th we still tend to run after the comforts for self. It is when we

achieve these comforts in the world of maya that we feel satisfied. It is this

proud sense of satisfaction on having achieved something material that gives

happiness to every'ody.

only the desire to achieve something$ to latch on to something$ an emotional

attachment to something that causes the sorrow when it is either not

1ere comes the relation 'etween the <th and the Eth 'hava. The <th

house of 'usiness and 'eing the naisargia house for K5ife;8rdhangniK it also'ecomes the 'hava for determining the compati'ility with partners in

papada$ also nown as %aunapada$ is the K8rudhaK of the )*th 'hava of thechart (0P1S Chapter + / Sloas )/*.

(%auna / means one who follows Y8nuchara / that which follows / Sloa * of

Chapter +/0P1SZ / 8ccordingly$ the K8rudhaK of the 'hava that follows

()*th the 2agna is$ thus$ the %aunapada or papada.

This pada determines the inner nature;attitude of the native towards the

spouse. The KSam'andhaK or relationship of the lord of papada vis/[/vis the

2agna lord$ 'y way of placement$ will determine whether the native would

marry at all or not. If the lord of papada goes to the )*th (the house forsacrifice;Tyaga therefrom$ it indicates a sure sign of denial of marriage. This

would also indicate the delays$ if any$ and the reasons for such delay in

marriage.

6ow$ how do we see the Ksam'andhaK of the lord of papada with the lord of

2agna

The rasi;sign occupied 'y the lord of the 2agna is called KPaa 2agnaK. The

Paa 2agna signifies the whims and fancies of the native. 5hile the natal

2agna determines what is good or 'ad for the 'ody$ Paa 2agna signifieswhat a person lies or dislies. Thus$ a papa graha occupying the 2agna will

not signify clearly the lies and dislies of the person as the Paa 2agna

would.

Therefore$ the relationship 'etween a graha and the lord of the 2agna;Paa

2agna should 'e studied carefully to determine the lies and dislies$ whims

Page 30: Astrology in Short

and fancies etc.$ of a person. 5hen the sam'andha of a graha is not good

with the lord of 2agna;Paa 2agna$ the graha tends to re"ect its

significations. This determines the fact that a certain placement of a graha$

though it signifies certain naisargi qualities$ loses such qualities in terms of

its relationship with the lord of the 2agna;Paa 2agna. This has to 'e studied

carefully to determine whether the person would marry or not$ what the

person will lie or dislie$ what the person will adapt or renounce etc. @or

example$ mere occupation of 2agna 'y Shani / a naisargia significator of

alcohol and negative things / will not determine the persons liing for alcohol

or negative aspects as his paa lagna would$ while the converse is true in

the case of 'enefics.

(6ote 1owever$ 0rihaspati W3araa for KJeevaK and Bhi Shati which is the

most important quality of manX is the naisargi araa for Paa 2agna.

Since papada determines the nature;attitude of the person towards the

spouse who is a lifelong partner$ it is very important that the sign;rasi of the

papada is auspicious. It is the auspiciousness of the rasi that determines

the purity of nature of the native and how the person would treat the

spouse. 8ny affliction to the rasi$ or if the rasi is inauspicious$ to that extent

the nativeKs attitude towards the spouse is affected. This would mean that

the compati'ility$ fidelity$ affection etc.$ which form the 'asics of good

spousal relationship$ either 'ecome questiona'le or it is totally a'sent

depending on the inauspiciousness or affliction of the sign.

Thus$ the lord of %aunapada 'ecomes very important in determining the

The length of oneKs life is to 'e seen from the =th house. 8 strong =th house$

from the =th are to 'e considered properly 'efore pronouncing the

longevity of the person.

Since the =th is indicative of the longevity$ it is also intimately connected

with the 'attlefield and enemies. 8 stronger enemy is 'ound to ill in the

war and its victory or defeat. Since =th is also an indicator of forts and

fortresses$ one will come to learn their strengths and weanesses$ rise and

fall of the forts (ingdoms and ings.

5e now that the lord of =th is also called rogesh (lord of long/term

disease. 8 proper and detailed study of the =th could indicate the type of

disease that one would die of and the length of time that one will suffer

during the inimical period of the =th house and its lord. The placement of the

lord of =th will also indicate the place where exactly in the physical 'ody

would one get affected 'y disease$ the type and duration of such disease

and its cure or otherwise. 8ll this would depend on the placement of grahas

in the =th$ placement and strength of lord of =th and lord of lagna.

It would 'e very interesting to note the relation 'etween the Eth and =th

house in terms of longevity. 5hile the =th indicates longevity$ the Eth ('eing

the )*th to =th indicates loss to the longevity. 8 strong Eth indicating

strong;over indulgence in sex causes loss of longevity. 2oss of semen$ which

is vitality$ cuts short the length of life. Thus the Eth$ which is opposite to

celi'acy$ affects very much the longevity of life. 8 strong enusian activity is

thus an enemy of the longevity.

=th is also the house of ?rutadhanam$ meaning$ the accruals in the form of

legacies and insurance.

It is also nown as the house of unearned wealth$ which also includes

gam'ling. 5hile the activity of gam'ling itself is seen from the =th house$

the arma (the act of speculation for gam'ling is seen from the 9th house

(it is the )+th from the =th / 0hat'havam principle.

Thus$ the =th$ along with the <th and )*th houses is called the KdushtstanaK

meaning the malefic houses 'ecause of their a'ility to either create or mae

enemies and provide detachment and loss. The ?oon in =th is particularly

undesira'le as it is called L8shtama Chandra ?arana 3araaL meaning the?oon in the =th wields death/inflicting powers to the sign;house it owns.

#ulers are nown to 'e illed$ wars are nown to 'e lost$ persons are nown

to lose their lives when the ?oon is placed in the =th.

5hy is the :th house the significator of father and dharma

@rom the principle of trines$ we now that 2ord 0rahma resides in the )st

'hava$ while 2ord Shiva resides in the 9th and 2ord ishnu in the :th 'hava.

5hile the )st 'hava signifies KayuK ('irth and the 9th signifies prosperity$

the :th indicates KdharmaK since 2ord ishnu resides in it. It is he who fixes

the dharma of the person and gives according to what he deserves.

The :th house of the naisargi rasi chara is Bhanur (Sagittarius which is a

fiery sign and its lord is Bevaguru 0rihaspati (Jupiter. The fiery nature of

Bhanur is 'ecause of its agni tatwa$ which means energy in the form oflight. This agni is called the K0rihat 8gniK or the light of enlightenment and it

acts on the dhi shati (head without with one will never 'e a'le to attain

enlightenment;nowledge. This energy is represented 'y 0rihaspati as we

now that he is the significator of dhi shati.

It is 'ecause of the reason that 2ord ishnuKs will in determining the creation

of the person$ his dharma$ his 'hagya etc.$ is seen from this house of

0rihaspati$ that Jupiter is seen as representing %od (0hagavate;0hagam in

the horoscope. 0rihaspati is said to represent %od in the horoscope 'ecause

he possesses all the qualities lie shantam (peace$ shu'halashanam (goodloos;disposition$ daya (mercy etc.$ that %od possesses.

0ut how is 0rihaspati connected with the 'irth of the individual Jupiter

represents %od and he is the sustainer of life ("eeva while Surya is the giver

of life. Therefore$ there should 'e some graha representing and acting as

%od to create life. It is Surya$ in the form of father who acts as %od to

Page 37: Astrology in Short

create life. %od fixes our 'irth on the 'asis of our past arma 'ut he cannot

tae 'irth on earth to create every individual 'eing. The "o' of creation is

thus the responsi'ility of the father when he$ at that moment of creation$

acts as %od. The representation of %od in physical form 'y the father is the

reason why the :th house is associated with father.

1ow is father responsi'le for 'irth

The atma that is to tae 'irth resides in the 'ody of the father in a place

called L?ooladharacharaL. The ?ooladharachara is actually the end of the

spinal chord in our 'ody. In the fetal stage$ the 'a'y in the wom' of the

mother develops with a tail$ which is actually the extension of the spinal

chord$ which gradually recedes$ with the growth of the fetus. In the

0hagwad %ita$ 2ord 3rishna has explained how the atma comes to reside in

this chara of the father. It is in the form of rain that the atma comes downon the earth and through the soil$ it enters the trees and gets into the fruits

through the sap of the tree. The atma$ then finds its way to the father when

such a fruit which 'ears the atma to 'e 'orn is consumed 'y him. Through

the 'lood stream it reaches the mooladharachara where it resides till such

time fixed 'y %od for its 'irth.

The deity of ?ooladharachara is 2ord ?aha %anapthi as he is the deity of

3etu. 5e now that 3etu rules the tail. It is the initial tail that gradually

recedes to 'ecome the end of the spine and is nown as ?ooladharachara.

Thus$ 3etu 'ecomes the important graha to 'e studied to see the procreativeaspects of the father. Therefore$ 3etu is nown to expand the family in terms

of num'ers and is also sym'olically represented 'y a yellow square$ which is

the sym'ol of 3etu (procreation. Since Surya is the giver of life and is the

naisargi atmaara (who also represents father$ it is exalted in 8ries in the

8shwin nashatra$ which is a nashatra of 3etu. Thus$ we see the connection

of how and why Sun is exalted in 8ries.

Thus$ we come to see the relationship 'etween father and %od. Therefore$

the physical presence;form of father is seen from the :th house. 0esides$

the other important of role of father in a personKs life is to teach the child theideals;principles of life. The first ideology;principle$ otherwise nown as

dharma$ is learnt from the house i.e.$ from the father. Then comes the role

of the teacher / %uru. 8 good guru teaches good things to the child. %ood

nowledge is very important for the proper up'ringing of the child. It is good

nowledge and good principles im'i'ed 'y the child 'oth in the family and

from the %uru$ that stand good in the life of a person. It eeps him

principled in life. 8nd good principles inculcate good and strong discipline.

Therefore$ the :th house 'ecomes a very important chart in the life of a

person.

8ny deviation from;desertion of dharma leads to the destruction of the self

finally. 5hen dharma (principle is affected$ the ))th house (la'hasthana

therefrom$ which is the Eth house indicating wife$ is first affected.

Su'sequently leading to affect the 9th (the house of children / 'ecause the

wifeKs principles (Eth is affected and the rd is affected as the praram'al

of the native is used to shield the family (wife and children. 8nd when the

rd is affected$ the 2agna too is affected 'ecause it is the individual who is

adding on to his sins (paapa. 6ow$ when is the dharma affected It gets

affected in a 'id to earn more (la'ha / ))th house. 0ad principles adopted

to increase the income in la'hasthan ())th no dou't increases the income$

'ut it also increases the sins to that extent affecting the :th house$ whichsets of a chain reaction to the other houses ())th therefrom. This is derived

from the L?andooa BashaL (?andooa dasha means frog "umps on every

third house. This is seen in the #udramsa chart and is seen for devining

Thus$ the :th 'hava is also for discipline. It indicates KJapaK which disciplines

the personKs life. Strong :th house will indicate a strong sense of discipline

strong :th and the Sun placed in ,th or =th from 2agna indicates the personto 'e very o'edient to father.

The :th house also reflects the past arma of the person. It is the good

:th 'hava also indicates the wife of the younger 'rother and also the wifeKs

8nother aspect that could 'e seen from the :th house is KrenunciationK and

The spiritual guru of the person is to 'e seen from the KimsamsaK (B/*+

Thus$ we may see that the :th house is a very important house of the

horoscope of a person. It reflects the principles and ideals of the person andto what extent will he;she follow it in life. Thus$ a good and strong :th house

Therefore$ the first significator of the )+th house 'ecomes Saturn (Sani as

he uses up a great deal of energy to do a wor. 0esides$ Saturn is the planet

To wipe away all accumulated de'ts and to perform wor one needs energy

5here does all the energy of ?ars come from Sun (Surya (6arayan is the

In this method$ the quadrants of the house of harm can also 'e harmful.

This is 'ased on the principle of Paraspara 3araa i.e. doing each other>s "o'when the planets;signs are placed in mutual quadrants. Paraspara 3araa

means$ you pat my 'ac and I shall pat yours or you ic my 'ac and I

relationship of the planets under consideration. Thus if natural enemies are

placed in the quadrants$ they shall fight and when natural friends are placed
