Astigmatism – definition, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment

Definition

Astigmatism is a common eye condition, which leads to blurred or distorted vision. The condition, depending upon the degree of its severity, can be treated with properly prescribed eye glasses, contact lenses, and laser refractive surgeries such as LASIK.

Astigmatism is caused by an eye that is not completely round, and is generally found in everybody’s eyes. The eye of the affected person is more like the back of a spoon; so when light enters the eyes of the person, it is refracted in more than one direction, and thus the brain fails to generate a clear image of the object.

Causes

The exact cause of Astigmatism is not known; however, this commonly found eye condition is generally associated with an imperfectly shaped cornea. Glasses, contact lenses, and surgeries are amongst the most common treatments for Astigmatism.

Symptoms

People affected with Astigmatism often experience blurred vision; however, Astigmatism cannot always be the cause of blurred vision; one might experience blurred vision on account of fatigue and eye strain.

It’s, therefore, best to consult an eye specialist.

Diagnosis

Through a detailed eye exam, your eye doctor will be able to tell whether the blurred vision is caused by Astigmatism.

We should, therefore, visit eye specialists often for eye check-ups and treatments. To get to know some well-reputed eye specialists, try Google.

Treatments

Most of the Astigmatism cases can be managed with eye glasses and contact lenses. In some cases, they are not even required unless the person is also affected with other eye problems such as farsightedness and near sightedness.

A laser refractive surgery, or vision correction surgery, is a new-age surgical procedure to treat Astigmatism and arrest the further vision damage and preserve and improve the vision so that the person can lead a normal life.

Eye surgeries

A laser refractive surgery is required when the damage is severe and the eye condition is interfering with the way the person leads his/her life. In a typical laser refractive surgery, an eye specialist reshapes the cornea of the eye. Though eye surgeons, today, have a couple of options in terms of eye surgeries, specific treatments or laser refractive surgery is recommended on an individual basis.

It is also to be noted that not all may qualify for a laser refractive surgery. To be an ideal candidate, one has to have healthy eyes that do not have any eye disease.
