Definition

Astigmatism is a common eye condition, which leads to blurred or distorted vision. The condition, depending upon the degree of its severity, can be treated with properly prescribed eye glasses, contact lenses, and laser refractive surgeries such as LASIK.

Astigmatism is caused by an eye that is not completely round, and is generally found in everybody’s eyes. The eye of the affected person is more like the back of a spoon; so when light enters the eyes of the person, it is refracted in more than one direction, and thus the brain fails to generate a clear image of the object.

Causes

The exact cause of Astigmatism is not known; however, this commonly found eye condition is generally associated with an imperfectly shaped cornea. Glasses, contact lenses, and surgeries are amongst the most common treatments for Astigmatism.

Symptoms

People affected with Astigmatism often experience blurred vision; however, Astigmatism cannot always be the cause of blurred vision; one might experience blurred vision on account of fatigue and eye strain.
