My father was always a MOPAR fan. In

1968 we moved to a new neighborhood and

the next door neighbor happened to own the

local Ford, Lincoln, Mercury dealer. The

neighbor Jim Irvin was determined to sell my

dad a Ford.

In the summer of 1969 the doorbell rang and one of the salesman at the

dealership was there with a brand new Mach

1 428CJ and asked my mom if my brother and

I could take a ride in the new Mustang. She

gave her OK and we both jumped into the car

for a ride. He took the car out to the country,

stopped the car in the road, and then

proceeded to smoke the tires through three

gears. I never forgot that day and after that a 1969 Mach 1 428CJ became my dream car.

Years passed, married, and with two daughters we moved to Spokane in 1992 from Illinois.

When we moved I was surprised to find that housing here was much more than the Midwest. At

that time, we had a 1969 Firebird convertible that we trailered out here to Spokane. In order to

purchase a house, we sold the convertible. I told my wife then later down the road I would get

Stang of The Month (Cont.)

We ended up with the Mustang a week later after selling

her car first. I gave her my Explorer and bought a cheap

Escort.

Immediately after buying the car I joined the

IEMC and attended my first meeting at Roundtable Pizza.

I met Ken and Cindy Degenstein at the meeting. Later I

asked him for advice on making the car better. Initially he

was reluctant to tell me everything wrong with my car as

far as originality. In the first year he redid the engine com-

partment. I saved money and did a few things every year

after.

Over the last few years I have been saving and

buying parts to do a restoration on the car. Received a

deluxe Marti Report and found the car to be a 1 of 1 and

has a few unusual options. Ken thought I should do a

concours restoration. The car has been completely

disassembled, placed on a rotisserie and stripped to bare

metal. So far the metal work is all done and the car is in

primer. Paint will be applied and then to Ken’s house for

reassembly. I spend my evenings searching through the

internet for either NOS or date coded correct rebuilt parts.

The engine and transmission are being gone through

currently and should be done by the end of the month.

Not one detail will be left untouched when completed.

Hopefully the car will be completed late this fall. The goal

is to place Gold in Concours Trailered next year in

Bellevue at the Mustang Roundup.

I will show the car trailered for a couple of years

before taking her cruising again. Once retired I look

forward to being more involved in the club and enjoying

all the activities. We still have my Marianne’s car and

hopefully I will see some of you at a few of the car shows.

“One Sweet Cruise”

My grandmother raised me during my teen-age years,

bless her heart. She had two daughters, so raising a boy during

the early 1960’s was probably not the easiest thing to do.

When I would tell her something that she thought was kind of

dubious, or maybe an out-right lie, she had a saying that let

me know I was caught. She would say, “Oh fiddle- faddle!” I

wonder what the equivalent of that would be in today’s world.

I somewhat shudder to think. Because I loved and respected

her, those three words usually corrected my behavior.

So what does this have to do with a sweet cruise?

During the cruise we have always stopped at the pre.y li.le

park at Long Lake Dam on the Spokane River. I have trivia and

odd-ball informa1on that I ask the group. Who ever answers

first gets a prize. This group can get pre.y compe11ve, which

is fun. The club had given me a small budget to buy the prizes,

which is appreciated. Sharon and I were at Shopko looking for

a treat for prizes. On the shelf were lots of boxes that immedi-

ately got my a.en1on, this 1me in a good way. The bright red

box said; fiddle faddle, which is delicious caramel popcorn and

peanuts. Wow! I knew this was what I wanted for the treats. I

bought a lot of them.

The morning of the cruise, Saturday, May 6, was cold

and blustery. It was not raining, but looked like it might at any

1me. We met in the large parking lot at Spoko-fuel, in Airway

Heights. Sharon and I were there early. The only ones I knew

who would show up for sure were Ken and Vicki West. Ken

had told me they would be there rain or shine. I knew they

would. A few cars started arriving one-at-a 1me. We were

leaving at 10:00 am. When it was 1me to leave eighteen cars

and over thirty brave folks had arrived. I was relieved and ap-

precia1ve of the turn-out.

We headed out on the cruise. Our first stop was at a large

pond and marsh area just out-side of Reardan. Ducks, a few geese,

and quite a lot of red and yellow-winged blackbirds are there. They

are fun to watch. A few of us got out of our cars and walked around

to look. Tom Eickmeyer and I tried to get a picture of the colorful

birds si=ng on a ca.ail, but no luck. Many of the folks were con-

tent to stay in their cars. We headed down the road for our next

stop.

We rolled in to the parking area at the dam. The cars were

all parked in a very pre.y group. It made for nice pictures. We got

out of our cars and the sun was shining. We walked over to some

large rocks and I started the trivia. The ac1on was fast, furious, and

fun. Since I had planned for a larger group, we had lots of boxes of

fiddle faddle. Some folks won two or three boxes. I had also

planned for each car to be given a box. All of us shared the wealth,

which was great. This made it “one sweet cruise.”

Heading up the river towards Tum Tum, we stopped at an

over view of Long Lake Dam. It is beau1ful and drama1c. You are

close and look straight down at the face of the dam. The river

makes a big turn in the canyon, which is why the dam was built

there in 1915. The informa1on board said it was the highest spill-

way in the world at 213 feet, when it was completed. Carl Son-

towski and I jokingly referred to it as one of the seven wonders of

the Spokane area. Along the path is a huge osprey nest with a fami-

ly currently residing. I believe they were glad to see us. We were

glad to see them. We con1nued to Zip’s in Suncrest. The staff were

ready for us, and did a great job. We enjoyed our lunch and talk.

ADer lunch the sun con1nued to shine brightly and some of us visit-

ed and compared notes in the parking lot. Barry and Francine had

driven the 67 Fastback on the cruise. Since he lives close he went

home and grabbed his 2017 Fastback to show off. It was nice to

see. I hope and believe the courageous folks who turned out had a

nice day. I know Sharon and I did. - Denny Jones

Mustangs Escort Veterans in Lilac Parade Once again the IEMC transported some Veterans from the Spokane Veterans Home in the Lilac Parade. The veterans

that ride really enjoy the experience and club members are pleased to give back to these veterans. My thanks to those mem-

bers that gave of themselves to do this for the veterans. We were blessed with great weather and the evening was a success.

The Prez Says...

June already! May has been

a very busy month. The Mystery

Cruise and Shake Down Cruise

were both well attended. The Ice Cream Run at the Valley 5

Guys netted around 18 members even though the weather did-

n’t cooperate as well as it could have. However, the burgers

and fries made it worth the trip. I will be looking forward to

hear all the stories from the cruises and Depot Days Trip. With

two auctions held in May, we are looking towards another on

June 17 in CDA . The Auction on Father’s Day weekend can be

a challenge to man, so please try to schedule some time during

the day to help out. Carl does a great job organizing the

auction event schedules; let him know when you can be there

to help out. This is a Club Event that adds funds to our bank

account. “Your Club Needs You!”

May is the month of the Lilac Festival. I want to thank

those who drove in the parade this year, and Rocky for taking

the lead as POC. Early weather looked a little iffy, but the

weather improved in time for a great event. All our Club’s

Cars, Veteran’s, Passengers, and Drivers all looked great.

The Downtown Car Show will be held July 19-20; Jana

is POC for this very large event. Plan to be there and enjoy the

Downtown event. We will be bagging meters for this event on

July 19th. Looking ahead; planning for the Hot Wheels in

Millwood is “on deck.” The July 29th event is OUR Club’s

biggest car event for the year, and requires many volunteers to

make it work. Meetings will be held in the near future to start

working toward another successful show.

Marcia and I want to personally thank the Club for your

cards, kind words, and thoughts after her mother passed. Some

were even able to attend the service. We really appreciate the

friendship and caring shared through our Club family.

Nearly halfway through the year; have you been on a

road trip yet?

a real help to the club for planning events and will give you

an opportunity to have your ride featured in the club

newsletter. Ask any club officer for a copy of the Mustang

Registry form. Turn it in at club meetings or mail to the

IEMC.
