INTRODUCTION A significant part of the history of the stained glass industry in the United States over the past 120 years belongs to Willet Hauser Architectural Glass Inc. while more recently, Associated Crafts® has contributed to industry innovation.

One of the oldest in North America, Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® was formed through the merger of two American stained glass studios: The Willet Stained Glass Studio of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Hauser Art Glass Company Inc., located in Winona, Minnesota. When the two united in 1977 they formed one of the largest stained glass studios in the world.

In 2005, the company changed its name to Willet Hauser Architectural Glass Inc. to more accurately reflect the long-term direction of the studio.

In 2014, the company was purchased by another prominent stained glass family, the Phillips, owners of Associated Crafts®. The Phillips have over 40 years experience in innovating in the industry from traditional practices to unique improvements.

Today, the collective company specializes in complete restoration, repair, preservation, conservation and new creations. From window inspection for insurance and historical documentation purposes to restoration and covering for those windows, Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® & Associated Crafts® is a full-service provider.

OUR HISTORY What is now known as Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® goes back to its roots in 1898 when William Willet and his wife Anne Lee founded The Willet Stained Glass and Decorating Co. (now Willet Hauser Architectural Glass®) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Shortly thereafter, the studio was relocated to Philadelphia.

Willet windows today can be found in churches and historic buildings in all 50 states and 14 foreign countries. Among the thousands of Willet creations are windows in the National Cathedral and the National Presbyterian Church in Washington DC; St. John the Divine Cathedral and the chapel at the United Nations in New York; and Grace and St. Mary’s Cathedrals in San Francisco, CA. For the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the Studio designed and fabricated the panels for an entire nine-story building constructed of faceted glass.

THE WILLETS Three generations of Willets have devoted their lives to what we today recognize as Willet Hauser Architectural Glass®.

Studio founder William Willet was an American portrait painter, muralist, stained glass designer, studio owner and writer. An early proponent of the Gothic Revival and active in the Early School of American stained glass, he founded the Willet Stained Glass and Decorating Company—now Willet Hauser Architectural Glass®—with his wife and partner Anne Lee Willet, in protest against the opalescent pictorial windows which were the rage at the turn of the twentieth century. Before he began creating works in stained glass, William Willet was a portrait painter with a rather distinguished clientele. He painted portraits for President McKinley, John Jacob Astor, and many others. Willet was considered by many to be the foremost American stained glass designer at the time of his death in 1921.

After William’s untimely death his widow Anne assumed management of the studio, followed by their son Henry Lee in 1934. Henry favored the Gothic tradition, and inspired staff artists such as George Gugert and Marguerite Gaudin to produce its bolder styling in intense hues. Under Henry’s guidance, the studio experimented with new techniques, and in the 1950s, was one of the first American studios to design and fabricate faceted glass windows. Willet Studio also developed the famous sculptured gold window technique and experimented with laminating stained glass, a technique known as Farbigem. Henry Lee Willet was an undeniably dynamic force in American stained glass until his death in 1983.

In 1965, his son E. Crosby Willet—who had worked at the studio since he was 14 years old—became the third generation President of Willet Studio. Under his leadership, Willet windows were created for many of the major churches and cathedrals in the United States including the National Cathedral

in Washington, D.C. and the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco.

Mr. Willet has a lengthy list of unique accomplishments and commendations from stained glass, architectural and artistic organizations. In 2009, on behalf of the Stained Glass Association of America, Mr. Willet received the Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award—celebrating his lifelong pursuit of excellence in the art and craft of stained glass. His lifelong devotion to the studio his grandfather began continues today in his role as independent studio consultant for Willet Hauser Architectural Glass®.

THE HAUSERS The focus of the Hauser Art Glass corporation, since its founding in 1946 in Winona, Minnesota, has been the maintenance, protection, repair and restoration of existing stained glass windows.

During World War II, the stained glass windows in the United States were neglected as the metal and glass that would normally be used for their repair was rationed for the war effort. Recognizing an

opportunity to aid many of the churches whose windows needed care, James E. Hauser founded the Hauser Art Glass Company.

James guided the company on a steady growth pattern, while the company continued to be dedicated to serving small, remote churches. Glass artists specializing in replicating different design styles joined the studio as the company’s projects became larger and more complex. In 1960, Hauser Art Glass began creating moderately priced windows for neighborhood churches as well as windows for hotels, restaurants, and private homes. Hauser Art Glass has aided over 10,000 churches in caring for their windows. In 1977, Willet Studio became a division of the Hauser Art Glass Company.

In 1994, James E. Hauser retired; however, the tradition of excellence continued with his two sons, James A. Hauser and Michael Hauser. The brothers led the company in developing new and innovative opportunities.

In 2005, the company changed its name to Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® to more accurately reflect

the long-term direction of the business. And in 2014, it was purchased by Associated Crafts®.

THE PHILLIPS In November of 1973, the Hausers hired John Phillips Sr. as their new territorial studio consultant for the Pittsburgh area. John quickly learned the business and very successfully represented the studio in the western Pennsylvania region. For John it was a family affair, as he often took his young son along and taught him about stained glass. His son, John Jr., rarely left his father’s side as he learned the stained glass business. John Jr. eventually came to work for his father, and later consulted for other studios and performed contract work for Willet Hauser™. In 1997, he and his wife Mary started their own stained glass studio, Associated Crafts®, which quickly grew to become one of the largest and most respected restoration studios in the nation.

In the fall of 2013, the Hausers decided to retire, and they contacted John Jr. Having known John Phillips Jr. since he was eight years old and having mentored him over the years and watched him grow in the industry, he fit the criteria.

Today John and Mary’s children J.W. and Shelby have also joined the business. J.W. serves as VP of Operations and Shelby serves as VP of Human Resources.

THE B0HANN0NS Along with John and Mary, longtime friend and colleague Robert Bohannon and his wife Diane also invested in the future of Willet Hauser Architectural Glass Inc. Robert has a rich background in stained glass and operations management. He currently serves as the Vice President of Production at Associated Crafts® and has overseen operations there since 2004. From 1982 to 1994, Robert was founder and owner of Bohannon Construction before he decided to open his own repair and restoration stained glass studio, Alpha 1. He continued with Alpha 1 for 11 years before joining the Associated Crafts® and the Willet Hauser™ family.

REJUVENATING Y0UR WIND0WSStained glass window rejuvenation is becoming increasingly critical asthe world’s stained glass windows are rapidly maturing. For many yearsthese stained glass treasures have been exposed to the elements causing deterioration, forcing the need for repair and restoration. A professional stained glass consultant is versed in all facets of repair and restoration, and they are able to act as an expert resource for your windows’ rejuvenation.

REPAIR AND REST0RATI0NStained glass maintenance is broken down into two categories: repair and restoration. Often a combination of the two is required. Repair refers mostly to onsite repair work such as broken glass replacement, bulge reduction, and securing of loose braces, etc., while historic restoration refers to the process of re-leading. During restoration each window is disassembled and then reassembled using new lead came and bracing.

Deciding which scope of work to do on the stained glass windows can be a confusing decision for any committee. We can help educate your committee on the pros and cons of each scope of work. Our team

is trained to match the right solution to the church’s unique needs. Because of our experience in craftsmanship, we promote a complete look at repair and restoration.

ST. LEO’S CHURCH, COLUMBUS, OHAssociated Crafts® completed a major repair for St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Columbus, Ohio. The century-old church features a collection of 64 stained glass windows hand crafted by the VonGerichten Art Glass Co. for the church’s 1917 opening. All 64 windows underwent a program of repair which consisted of cleaning, painting exterior millwork and the installation of a vented protective glazing system. The careful work by our talented craftsman and the determination of the St. Leo Preservation society which funded the project has brought the windows back to their original beauty and will allow them to be enjoyed by visitors for many years to come.

C0NSERVATI0NWillet Hauser™ & Associated Crafts® are the leaders in caring for the stained glass treasures of the United States. We maintain a conservation department staffed by specialists devoted to preserving historic and collectible pieces of stained glass.

Our conservation department is experienced in the restoration of fine stained glass windows. We have had the honor of restoring and protecting some of the finest windows in the United States. Windows by Charles J. Connick, Louis Comfort Tiffany, The Povey Brothers, The Ruby Brothers, John LaFarge, Henry Wynd Young, Francis Xavier Zettler, Franz Mayer and Innsbruck Studios are among the thousands of

windows restored by our studios. Perhaps the most complex restorations are those

of the multi-plated windows by Tiffany and La Farge.

TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, GALVESTON, TEXAS When Hurricane Ike struck in 2008, Willet Hauser™ was in the process of restoring an eclectic collection of

stained glass at Trinity Episcopal Church in

Galveston, TX. The strength

of the hurricane was so intense that it blew out and nearly destroyed an entire panel from the church’s beloved Tiffany window known as “Christ and the Children.”

BROWN MEMORIAL PARK AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, BALTIMORE, MARYLANDIn 2003 Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® completed the historic restoration of two large Tiffany windows for Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, Baltimore, MD. Each measuring 16' wide by 32' tall, they are considered two of the largest Tiffany windows in

the world. The project included complete disassembly of all the leaded panels, cleaning of all of the glass, edge gluing of the damaged glass, reassembly of panels and plates by re-leading and copper foiling, and complete refurbishing of all bracing materials.

Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® and its craftspeople were proud to receive the 2003 Craftsmanship Award for stained glass restoration. The award was given by the Baltimore Building Congress and Exchange in recognition of the high quality of craftsmanship exhibited in the care and protection of the stained glass windows at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church. According to the Craftsman Committee, the windows we restored are considered one of the world’s finest collections of Tiffany windows still in their original setting.

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, BEND, ORAssociated Crafts® had the opportunity to restore the historic windows of the First United Methodist Church in Bend, Oregon in 2014. The church’s thirteen windows date back to the construction of the church in 1922. Their maker, the Povey Brothers Studio of Portland, was the largest and most well known producer of stained glass in the late 19th and early 20th century in the state of Oregon. Povey windows were regarded as “Tiffany’s of the Northwest”, according to Portland’s Architectural Heritage Center, and could be found throughout the Western United States. The project included repairing the sagging windows, cleaning and replacing the old, foggy protective covering on the outside with new clear, pure-cast acrylic. The work of Associated Crafts® has brought new life to the beauty the Povey Brothers Studio created for this historic church so many years ago.

PRESERVATI0NFor many years your stained glass windows have been exposed to the elements causing deterioration. Professional studios not only work to repair that deterioration but also the best of them work ahead to prevent or reduce it from happening in the future. Associated Crafts® and now Willet Hauser™ use two industry innovations to accomplish this.

Associated Crafts’/Willet Hauser’s Klear-Flo™ protective covering system features a fully-customizable in-frame venting system to optimize the venting needs of individual windows. It is important to know how to and be able to adjust the venting for each window. This optimizes its protection by preventing damaging heat build up and allows condensation to dry out without damaging the window.

Klear-Flo™ is fully weather-proofed due not only to superior design but the use of the highest quality sealant. There are plenty of less expensive sealants but none offer the benefits of a high quality sealant such as Silpruf® or Dow Corning®. Improper protective covering installation can create more damage than protection. Choose a professional, experienced team who include the best materials and product design.

Contouring of the aluminum framing to closely match the existing architectural millwork is aesthetically pleasing and the best process to preserve your windows. Our craftsman have mobile bending devices so the new framing can be fully customized on site. Our ability to contour allows the clients existing millwork and architecture to remain dominant while providing the highest quality and the best protective covering system available in the industry, Klear-Flo™.

Our craftsmen are skilled in installing many types of protective covering. Customers often ask which one we sell. We sell the right product for the project. On page 13 is a chart outlining the pros and cons of each product. A representative can help you to choose the correct product for your windows and neighborhood.

SACRED HEART CHURCH, COSHOCTON, OHAssociated Crafts® brought the historic stained glass windows of Sacred Heart Church in Coshocton, Ohio back to their original splendor in 2014. Installed in the early nineteenth century, the windows are regarded as some of the oldest pictorial stained glass in Coshocton County, Ohio. The preservation project, necessary to save the windows, included replacing the deteriorating lead came which allowed the severely bowed windows to be fitted safely back into a lead matrix. In addition to re-leading, details that had gotten lost over the years—particularly in some of the faces in the pictorial windows—were carefully restored by our talented artisans.

NEW FRAME + FRAME REN0VATI0N When planning your restoration and repair work it is important to repair the existing stained glass window frames. The frame is what houses and stabilizes your valuable stained glass not to mention that it is a very visible part of the window. This is a very important service—whether the frames are made of wood or steel. Without

Our talented designers and sales consultants draw upon our repository of nearly 25,000 original stained glass designs to assist our clients in realizing exactly what they want in their stained glass window – aesthetically and thematically. This repository gives the client and designer a starting point from which we can begin the creation of a custom design.

We employ several master wood and steel workers to provide onsite repairs to existing frames thus allowing the customer to have a quality project that fits the budget.

Associated Crafts®/Willet Hauser™ offers a line of new frames as well. An aluminum double glazed thermo barrier frame. We also offer a frames constructed of Azek®, a material that can both be custom-molded and does not deteriorate. It also provides a double glazed solution for your windows.

We can also provide custom wood and steel frames.

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, WHEATON, ILAssociated Crafts® combined the new with old when St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wheaton, IL relocated to a new sanctuary. Desiring to relocate their beloved stained glass windows to the new sanctuary, St. John’s Lutheran Church reached out to Associated Crafts® in 2011 to make that desire a reality.

Thanks to our ability to adaptively reuse preexisting windows and a bit of savvy design skills, we were able to fit their gothic arched windows into the larger, rectangular shaped openings of the new facility. Eight new windows were designed to accommodate the old windows, which date back to the 1960s. In order to fit the gothic arched window pairs, the new designs included the addition of two side panels for each of the eight windows measuring .5' wide x 12' high. Additionally, a 3.5' rose window was included in the upper area of each design to accommodate the extra space at the top of each window. Our glass selector carefully matched a series of new glass pieces with the glass of the old windows. The new glass was arranged according to a simple border pattern in an effort to work harmoniously with the original windows, rather than distract from them. An impressive 7,296 individual new, painted pieces were included in the window series.

In addition to the eight new windows installed, another pre-existing window was fitted into a light box for the new space. All windows were installed with new frames in 2014.

FABRICATI0N 0F NEW DESIGNS For over 120 years some of the finest of American stained glass window designs have been created by the artisans of Willet Hauser Architectural Glass®. Now as new designs of architecture are being developed, our artists and craftspeople are experimenting with new styles and new techniques to complement them.

COWLES HALL AT ELMIRA COLLEGE, NEW YORKAmerican novelist and humorist Mark Twain was celebrated in this recent window designed for Cowles Hall at Elmira College in Elmira, New York.

Willet Hauser™ offers the skills of its talented staff of craftspeople as well as artists from outside our organization. An independent glass designer can have their vision brought to life by the exceptional hands at Willet Hauser™. We encourage artists who have never designed in glass to look anew at local public arts projects and to look at Willet Hauser™ as part of their team in creating new ideas in architectural glass.

ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, CHARLEVOIX, MIAssociated Crafts® fabricated a trio of windows for Saint Mary Catholic Church in Charlevoix, Michigan. Inspired by prayer cards provided by the Church, the symbolically rich windows depict the figures of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, and Saint Joseph. The project took three months from the earliest design stages, through painting, fabrication and installation. After fabrication in our studio, the windows were installed into the existing openings of St. Mary Catholic Church with protective glazing to keep them looking their best for many years to come.

NEW YORK CITY METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY ARTS FOR TRANSIT, NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORKPerhaps one of our favorite projects utilizing the talented work of artists of another medium is our work with the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts for Transit Program.

The Arts for Transit, or MTA, program encourages the use of public transit by presenting visual and performing arts projects in subway and commuter rail stations. As part of the overall project, neighborhood artists working in various media are invited to compete for projects in nearby stations- Willet Hauser™ has been chosen to fabricate faceted stained glass panels based on the winning designs of many of these artists.

LEADED GLASSLeaded stained glass windows bring to mind the glories of the great gothic cathedrals. A leaded stained glass window is a mosaic made up of pieces of beautifully colored glass, cut to the desired shapes and held together by strips of grooved lead, which are reinforced and anchored in the window frame. To control the passage of light as well as add details like faces, drapery ornament and lettering, the glass is hand-painted with reddish brown or black powdered pigment, which is later permanently fused to the glass once fired in a kiln. The same methods of leaded glass fabrication, perfected more than eight hundred years ago in Europe, are in use today. The art of stained glass is one of the few handcrafts that are still practiced much as it was during the Middle Ages.

Our studio boasts a collection of nearly 900 unique individual glass colors, many of which are rare and date back to the early - mid 20th century.

SPRING GROVE CEMETERY, CINCINNATI, OHIO The studio captured the historic moment astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke the famous words, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,” as he planted the first foot on the moon. This epic event was captured in the Peace Bay window designed for Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio the year following when man first landed on the moon. The window is a great example of the many secular themed windows we’ve done and continue to do in addition to our ecclesiastical work.

BLACK RIVER FALLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH BLACK RIVER FALLS, WISCONSIN Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® was commissioned to create a Tiffany-like landscape scene with a contemporary aesthetic for the Chancel window at Black River Falls United Methodist Church in the small town of Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The 20 foot wide by 24-foot high Chancel window depicts a landscape scene featuring lambs grazing along the banks of a river as the sun sets in the background.

page 16 page 17

Page 11: Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser™ - History, Products and Services

The depth of color, and the stunning variances of light and dark throughout the window, is due entirely to the glass—as not a single piece of glass is painted.

THE MASONIC TEMPLE AND MASONIC LIBRARY & MUSEUM GRAND BALLROOM, PHILADELPHIA, PAWillet Hauser Architectural Glass® concluded a commission for Philadelphia’s historic Masonic Temple. The four windows depict four presidential Freemasons: Presidents George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman. Located in

the Temple’s Grand Ballroom, the windows range in height from sixteen feet six inches to seventeen feet and are truly a sight to behold, accurately designed with attention to historic detail and great realism. Symbolic imagery can be seen throughout all four windows; most notably is Washington’s apron. It was faithfully reproduced according to the original apron on display in their museum. Architectural features throughout the building and room the windows are located in, from the ornate colonnade to the flooring, are echoed in the designs. Lighting also played a large part of the design. The windows are set before custom LED light boxes that mimic natural daylight. Completed in under a year, from initial planning to fabrication, the studio met an aggressive deadline considering the scale and scope of the project.

ST. PETER’S-BY-THE-SEA EPISCOPAL CHURCH, CAPE MAY POINT, NEW JERSEYWillet Hauser Architectural Glass® had the honor of contributing to the storied history of St. Peter’s-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, known locally as The Gingerbread Church, is an historic church located in Cape May Point, New Jersey. Originally built for Philadelphia 1876 Centennial Exhibition, the church was moved to Cape May Point in 1879. Designed by studio Art Director Kathy Jordan, the clerestory windows depict nautical imagery, such as a lighthouse and a ship at sea, as a nod to the church’s location near the ocean. The other six windows depict Biblical imagery, including the Miracles of the Wedding Feast at Cana and Feeding the Five Thousand, as well as symbols of the Holy Spirit Dove and Communion. The work was received with great applause from the congregation who are thrilled with the new additions to their beloved little “Gingerbread Church.”

WINONA NATIONAL BANK, WINONA, MNWillet Hauser Architectural Glass® designed and fabricated a window for an historic building it its hometown of Winona, Minnesota. The window was created by Willet Hauser™ for the Winona National Bank’s Centennial Celebration. The historic bank was erected in 1916 and designed by prominent Chicago architect George Maher, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright. Creating a new work for this centennial local bank is nothing short of an honor as the new window is held in good company. In addition to the Willet Hauser™ window, a number of Tiffany Studios windows, created from the sketches of Maher, adorn the building. Studio artisans worked diligently to complete the window in time of the bank’s ceremony with fabrication lasting approximately five months.

FACETED GLASSHandcrafting faceted windows, like leaded glass, is an involved, multi-step process. Brilliantly colored glass, approximately one inch in thickness, is first cut to the desired size in the studio. The surface is then chipped or faceted to enhance the design, imparting a jewel-like quality. The matrix, composed of epoxy, is then poured around the carefully arranged pieces of glass, holding them in place to form a structural unit of great strength that is also water repellent.

The design possibilities of this medium are infinite as it adapts to the smallest openings and to larger areas up to entire wall surfaces of great proportions. The medium lends itself to representational design as successfully as to abstract, and the matrix can be a mere hairline, or any desired width up to several feet.

The bold design is created through controlling the size and shape of the glass pieces and the shape and width of the dark matrix. It is a creative mosaic of light. As in all art, faceted windows can be well

designed, exciting and vibrant, or they can be trite and dull. The skill and sensitivity of our designers and craft artisans assure that each of our faceted windows is a work of fine art worthy of your building.

For the architect and building owner who desire the ageless beauty of detailed traditional leaded stained glass but have a limited budget, we can develop similar faceted stained glass designs at a fraction of the cost. Through skillful manipulation of the negative area of the matrix, the impression of complex traditional tracery and detailed classical design can be obtained.

NEW YORK WORLD’S FAIR: HALL OF SCIENCE, FLUSHING MEADOWS, NEW YORK 1964 In the early 1960s Willet Studio illuminated architect Wallace Harrison’s Hall of Science, designed for the 1964-65 World’s Fair, with thousands of pieces of faceted blue glass. The ninety foot serpentine structure is made up of over 5,000 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide panels pierced with one inch Blenko glass dalles cast into a matrix of reinforced concrete. Designed to give the impression of being in deep space the primary glass color is blue- more than a dozen shades of blue were used, accented with touches of gold, ruby, green and purple to further intensify the feeling of outer space.

GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC CHURCH, GARLAND, TEXASAssociated Crafts® recently had the honor of working with famed stained glass artist and designer Charles Z. Lawrence, known for his contemporary award-winning stained glass work throughout

the United States - notably windows in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. From 2015 to 2016 Lawrence designed a unique series of thirteen faceted glass windows for Good Shepherd Catholic Church, a multicultural church in Garland, TX. His windows were designed to compliment an original collection of windows that were carefully removed by our artisans from Good Shepherd Catholic Church’s old church and restored in our studio before for placement in the church’s new location. The symbolic nature of the windows, as well as the glass palette, allow the windows to harmonize with the original collection. The series includes an array of carefully selected symbols from the Old and New Testament as well as faceted windows depicting full figures of Mary, Queen of Heaven and the Good Shepherd. Fabrication began in 2016, with the inch thick glass pieces being hand selected and hand cut in our studio.

SCULPTURED G0LD Perhaps the most exquisite offering we can bring to your project is the Sculptured Gold window by Willet Hauser™. Developed in the 1950s by Henry Lee Willet, this exclusive technique has certainly enhanced our reputation as the leader in American Stained Glass.

The Sculptured Gold window is created with very special care and craftsmanship. A traditional leaded stained glass window is overlaid with a low relief sculpture fabricated of sheet lead forming figures and designs. All of the sculpture and the lead are then covered with 23-karat gold leaf. One must personally view a Sculptured Gold window to fully appreciate the magnificence. This fabulous window on the next page is beautiful during the day and spectacular at night.

RIGHT: Sculptured gold windows allow for the window to be viewed in two very different ways in the day time and night time. During the day, light streams through the glass; at night, the glass appears black while the special sculptured gold façade is illuminated under the space’s interior lights.

ETCHED GLASS Another service offered by Willet Hauser™ is known as Etched Glass. Glass etching refers to the process of abrading or roughening a piece of glass in an effort to produce a decorative design atop the glass surface. Etched glass can be an effective tool when light is limited.

The studio uses various techniques in order to achieve an etched surface in glass, all with different artistic effects. Hydrofluoric acid is often used to etch specialized art glass with two or more layers of color, known as flashed glass. Hydrofluoric acid can also be used to engrave detailed designs onto clear glass. Designs can be engraved onto glass using a sandblast process too. Additionally, we can accomplish all of these etching techniques using computer drawn designs and plotter-cut self-adhesive vinyl sheets.

FUSING The fusing technique is a process of kiln-formed-layering of clear and colored glasses; fired to a fusing temperature that melts the glass elements into one another. Inclusions of glass powders, frits, stringers, enamels and wire mesh are just a sampling of elements that can be added for dimensional effect. Kiln-glass harnesses color’s transformative power allowing us to tailor the experience with light in a space. Fused kiln-glass is easily maintained and permanent, offering functional solutions with an aesthetic benefit.

LAMINATI0N The Willet Studio introduced the Dutch technique of Farbigem to the United States in 1966, after a visit to the Amsterdam glass factory known as Glas-Industrie Van Tetterode. Research and development of the process was carried out at the studio from 1967 into the 1980s.

The laminated glass process today is very different from the farbigem technique Willet did in the past. Today’s glass laminating process uses Verifix 2k silicone to bond art glass to modern architectural substrates such as safety glass, float glass, insulated units, or to more art glass. After priming the base glass, a two-part silicone adhesive mixture is applied to this base glass. The art glass is then carefully laid onto this silicone layer following the approved design. The silicone sets solidly in 12 hours and is fully-cured in 72 hours, although heat can be used to reduce the initial setting time. The

Verifix 2K silicone technique has been proven for 20 plus years to be structurally permanent, UV and weather resistant and non-yellowing.

BUILDING ON TRADITIONMASTER APPRENTICESHIP PR0GRAM Given that Willet Hauser™ has over a century of history and a reputable lineage of artisans, Willet Hauser™ has always been known as a training ground for elite artisans in stained glass. Bringing back that tradition formally is important not only to the company but to the stained glass industry. Associated Crafts® and Willet Hauser Architectural Glass Inc. offer an esteemed Master Apprenticeship Program in the field of stained glass. This historic program offers apprentices the opportunity to learn all aspects of the craft and art of stained glass.

The multi-year Master Apprenticeship Program features several major areas of study including studio work (creation, fabrication and restoration), Field work (preservation, on-site repair and installation of new art) and Design Work (the creation of small scale artwork used to fabricate stained glass windows). In addition to the above study areas, apprentices complete outside coursework in areas such as Drawing, Computer Arts, History and Glass Studies. Additionally, apprentices are expected to take part in in-house classes. Upon successful completion, individuals are given journeyman status. As certified journeymen, they will be able to perform the tasks of the trade within the field of stained glass and to supervise apprentices.

0UR C0MMUNITY STUDI0 T0URS Guests and clients are invited to tour our studio in beautiful Winona, Minnesota. Taking part in a tour will allow one to better understand the methods behind the incredibly fascinating art of stained glass!

If you or your organization is interested in visiting our studio for a tour, please contact us at 1-800-533-3960.

PROCESS OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT STUDIOSUBMITTING PR0P0SALSWhen your community recognizes that your historic treasures are in need of care, many congregants don’t know where to start. In order to best prepare for the project, your church will want to seek out several companies to submit proposals.

Ask specific questions about their experience. Experienced businesses are truly the best at caring for your church communities treasures. A lot of complexity can come from years of wear and tear on windows. An experienced team is best prepared for those challenges.

For example, how long have they been in business? Do they have experience with church windows and the particular service you need such as repair, restoration, protective covering, new windows, and/or framing?

Before inviting the team to bid, ask the studio to send references over at least a five-year period of business. Contact recent references upfront. We suggest you contact the most recent church committees, as it may be hard to talk with someone familiar with the project from several years ago. For example, you may ask if the company completed the job on time; communicated during the project; cleaned up well and worked around your services, activities, etc.; completed the contract skillfully; what type of work they did (repair, re-lead, covering, etc); and were they satisfied with the project?

Also, as a broader view, check the Better Business Bureau as well. Request evidence of their financial viability and stability. For

financial history, you can check their status with Dunn & Bradstreet or their bank. A letter of reference from their bank and/or a Dunn and Bradstreet report provides evidence that they will be there when you need them next.

Also review the state’s websites where the company is licensed. Be aware that sometimes people report information incorrectly, so be very direct and ask the potential studio to explain any items that are not clear. Some companies use variations of names.

Once you determine 3-5 credible companies, ask them to come out and view your project.

page 26 page 27

Page 16: Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser™ - History, Products and Services

REVIEWNow that you have decided which credible companies to invite to bid your project, you will want to collect the bids and compare them. Unlike many industries, stained glass is extremely specialized. Professional studios often compete with specifications written by amateur companies. This is why we diligently work to educate our clients as often others do not know the terms and jargon outside the industry. This makes reading the bidders proposed scope of work difficult as the jargon is not standardized and often exclusive to the particular company. Often a simple understanding of terms and jargon will allow the church to see the correct scope of work.

Churches often are confused by the terminology different studios use. Please ask for an explanation of each specification so you can fully understand and correctly compare each studio.

Request that the work is itemized per each window with all windows fully listed in the proposal. Ask them to add a description of each service recommended for the window and the benefit to your church.

As many industries do, this industry lacks consistency and regulation. It is made up of smaller companies started by craftsmen and artists who took a hobby and changed it into a career. While this is certainly admirable, these individuals often do not have the knowledge of all the facets of the business or even of the stained glass medium.

Some studios specialize in a certain type of work. For example, a studio that creates a number of new windows will often bid restoration projects as a complete re-lead. This scope of work fits into their business operations. An on-site restoration project may be possible but since they do not have the expertise or the manpower to complete the onsite work the client is left with a proposal for a different more expensive scope of work. Another example is when a studio that does not do new windows may not recommend re-leading when needed as it cannot be easily completed at their facilities.

Both studios make a strong case for their approach but we are left with a confused committee and an unclear idea of what is best for their church’s needs. Willet Hauser™ has staff and capabilities for all scopes of work and is driven to provide the best scope of work for the clients needs. The most important part of the process is that you get to ask all of your questions, are feeling educated and are comfortable with your choices.

Some of the most common pitfalls when choosing a studio are well-intentioned but not necessarily well-informed. For example, a regular glass company may suggest putting up covering over current windows without repairing the windows. As the glass company is not an expert in stained glass, they aren’t qualified to assess this form of historic art. Often these companies are unaware of the needs of stained glass and create situations that are hazardous to the the well being of your stained glass.

Another common mistake is choosing a company only because it is the local choice. This rationalization isn’t a benefit to serving the church unless the company truly has the right credentials, expertise and experience. Since there are so few quality companies doing this work it is rarely possible.

Occasionally, someone will choose a less expensive contractor. While we certainly understand that budget is incredibly important, preserving your historic windows is more so. Our company guarantees their work. We also have a price match program for equal scopes of work from reputable companies. Please contact your consultant for more details.

AWARDING THE W0RKNow that you have chosen who you would like to work with, you are looking forward to getting started. We encourage you to get your details in order before getting started.

Be sure the proposal/contract clearly itemizes each service per window. All materials should be specified.

Make sure the payment terms are detailed and specific and should not be paid ahead! Be sure each stage is fully completed and you are satisfied before authorizing payment.

In the stained glass industry, guarantees can range from zero to 20 years and can cover the entire project or just the workmanship. In some cases, smaller studios make guarantees that they cannot fulfill because they are not in business long enough to honor their guarantee. Associated Crafts® and Willet Hauser™ have stood the test of time and will continue to be there when needed.

The best guarantee is to have the work completed correctly in the first place. Make sure the proper products are used and that the company performed all work in a quality manner. A ten year guarantee against any defective workmanship is appropriate. A church can also protect itself by inspecting stages of the project prior to final payment.

As a church leader, others have put their confidence in your abilities and stewardship. Honor their confidence by doing your homework!

They have raised three adult children and have been “empty-nesters” for the last seven years.

• Pam Hamre is a Minnesota native. She has been with Willet Hauser™ since November 1980 when she graduated from Minnesota State Mankato. Today, she leads the administrative efforts for both companies from the Winona studio. With her family she enjoys all the seasons that Minnesota has to offer.

• Leslie Elliott was born and raised in Wabasha, MN. She is responsible for client services, making those transactions seem seamless. She has worked with Willet Hauser™ since 2010 starting as a part-timer. When the company was purchased, she remained and was promoted to taking over the accounting department. On the weekends she spends time with her family and friends.

We are also always expanding our current team and promoting our teammates.

Repurp0se an Hist0ric Wind0wThroughout the United States, declining memberships in congregations have led to the closing of many religious institutions in some areas while at the same time, churches in other areas have been rapidly expanding and building to accommodate growing church memberships.

Our staff has been helping religious institutions that are closing to sell their stained glass windows to churches that are growing and in need of stained glass windows for their new sanctuaries and auditoriums. We help the seller meet the buyer and handle the removal, restoration, frames, and re-installation in the new location. We are also developing our “Windows to the World” program where we can bring religious art to churches around the world.

FundraisingWe know that your church community wants to contribute to the preservation of current windows or the creation of new windows. We have tools to help congregants of every income level contribute to their community.

Our “Stained Glass Designs Coloring book” and colored pencil packages allow church members of all ages and incomes to sell coloring books in their communities. For a small donation community members get to contribute to their church and get a great gift for themselves or someone else.

For larger donors, our proposal system provides a donor costs to support the “Adopt a Window” program. This program enables individual church members and/or a group of members to make larger donations to purchase the cost of services to a single window or groups of windows. Churches often choose to memorialize this donation with a plaque calling out the donor(s) near the window(s).

REFERENCESN0TEW0RTHY Willet windows today can be found in churches and historic buildings in all 50 states and 14 foreign countries.

Willet Studio originally gained significant recognition in 1910 in a special international competition for stained glass window design and installation at West Point Military Academy. Twenty-six studios entered the competition—one of which was the famed Tiffany Studios of New York.

page 32 page 33

Page 19: Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser™ - History, Products and Services

Willet was the winner, and in the long range project installed lancets which are tall, narrow windows with a pointed arch top. They were contracted to install two lancets each year for 66 years—one lancet in honor of each year’s graduating class and one in memory of the graduating class of 120 years previous. Completed in 1976, it remains the longest continuing commission in the history of American stained glass.

Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® has received many coveted awards—from the American Institute of Architects and others— for their fine works. Recent awards include the President’s Award for Product/Service of the Year by the Baltimore Chapter of American Institute of Architects and a Craftsmanship Award for stained glass restoration from the Baltimore Building Congress and Exchange.

The history of stained glass is full of talented people who have created an impressive body of work. We have windows in every state and many overseas. Following are samples of some of our more noteworthy windows.

REFORM CONGREGATIONAL KENESETH ISRAEL, ELKINS PARK, PENNSYLVANIAThe stained glass windows at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, PA are the result of our collaboration with well-known artist and teacher Jacob Landau. His visionary interpretation of “The Prophetic Quest” was translated into stained glass in a series of ten windows each over 24 feet tall by five feet wide, depicting various Patriarchs and Prophets starting with Abraham and ending with Job. They are rendered in a kaleidoscope of color and animated with rich symbolism. Calligraphy in both English and Hebrew add to its iconography.

CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST SPOKANE, WASHINGTONThe Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, WA, a rare example of classic Gothic architecture in the United States, houses a tremendous collection of our traditional, figural work. When the historic stained glass firm Charles J. Connick and Associates closed its

doors in 1986 we were invited to continue the work that they began in the late 1920s.

To date, we have designed and installed 5 four-lancet nave clerestory windows and five single-panel high sacristy windows, according to the designs of artist, Kenneth Crocker.

THE CATHEDRAL OF THE SACRED HEART, WINONA, MINNESOTA After finishing major renovations in 2007, the Cathedral clergy began working with Willet Hauser™ to establish a plan to integrate the windows in the new entrance, narthex and meeting room areas.

The Sacred Heart window (located above the entrance) was given to the cathedral as a gift from the Hauser family in memory of James and Genevieve Hauser. Designed by Charles Z. Lawrence, the work is a masterful example of Lawrence’s contemporary take on a traditional theme.

Page 20: Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser™ - History, Products and Services

GRACE CATHEDRAL, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Long-time studio designer Marguerite Gaudin designed a series of six two-lancet windows with rose tracery for San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral depicting the theme of renewal. Designed in 1964, the work is an example of Gaudin’s departure from the traditional leaded glass design aesthetic and exhibits her contemporary approach. The studio’s six windows are part of a larger collection of art at the cathedral which includes stained glass works by Charles Connick, Gabriel Loire and an altar piece by Keith Haring.

BROWN MEMORIAL PARK AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND In 2003, Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® completed the historic restoration of two large Tiffany windows for Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, located in the historic Bolton Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Each measuring 32 feet tall by 16 feet wide, they are considered two of the largest Tiffany windows in the world. Willet Hauser Architectural Glass® and its craftspeople were proud to receive the 2003 Craftsmanship Award for stained glass restoration given by the Baltimore Building Congress and Exchange in recognition of the high quality of craftsmanship exhibited in the care and protection of the stained glass windows at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church.

ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, LAFAYETTE SQUARE, WASHINGTON, DC Willet Hauser™ was honored to care for the restoration of the historic stained glass windows at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC. Known as “The Church of the Presidents” and registered as a national historic landmark, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lafayette Square’s first service was held in October 1816. From that time to the present, every President of the United States has attended a service at St. John’s.
