5. HOW TO CONSERVE WATERHonourable principal, respected teachers and mydear friends. The topic of my speech today is “Howto conserve water”. Water is precious. It is in shortsupply. We must conserve it. There are many waysto conserve water in the city.

• We must use less water for activities likewashing, cleaning, bathing, drinking, brushingour teeth etc.

• We should store water in ponds, tanks, reservoirs etc.

• Do not leave the tap open while brushingyour teeth. Use a mug for holding water.

• Use waste water for watering the lawns andgardens.

• Do not use a shower for bathing. Use abucket of water instead; you use less water inthis way.

If you follow these steps you will surely conservewater. Remember water is scarce.

Thank you.

5. CHILDREN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO USEMOBILE PHONES IN THE CLASS

Respected chairperson, members of the jury and myworthy opponent. The topic for today’s debate is‘Children should be allowed to use mobile phonesin the class’. I, Mohan Ahuja of class III stand beforeyou to speak against the motion. I am of the opinionthat children should not be allowed to use mobilephones in the class. These phones distract them andthe other students from doing serious studies. Theyalso tend to watch objectionable and violence filledfilms or video clips on such phones. This leads totheir poor performance in studies and other areas.I hope I have been able to make my point clear thatchildren should not be allowed to use mobile phonesin the class.

Thank you.

5. STUDENTS SHOULD BE PERMITTED TOHAVE A TELEVISION IN THE BEDROOMSRespected chairperson, members of the jury andmy worthy opponent. The topic for today’s debate is “Students should bepermitted to have a television in their bedrooms”and I, Akshay Arora of class III-C stand before youto speak against the motion. Television would be adistraction for students. I am of the view thatstudents would not concentrate in their studies ifthey were to watch TV in their bedrooms. Theywould be tempted to watch objectionable andviolence-filled programmes which are not meant forthem as there is no one to keep a watch over themor monitor their timings. They would watch

programmes till late night leading to difficulty ingetting up to go to school the next morning. Allthese factors would lead to a fall in the performancein their studies. So I assert that students should notbe permitted to have a television in their bedrooms.

Thank you.

Subject : Visit to an old-age home

Dear Biju

Last week my school took our entire classon a visit to an old-age home in Sonipat. I justcannot forget what we saw there. We werevery much moved to see their loneliness. There was no one to hear what they wantedto say. Some were unable to walk. Therewasn’t any means of entertainment otherthan an old television. Some of our studentsread stories to them. Some gave themstorybooks to read. A few of us played gameslike cards and ludo. We also shared the

snacks that we had carried with us. Theyenjoyed it a lot. We saw the smile on theirfaces. I wish we could do more for them.

5. JUNK FOOD SHOULD BE BANNED INSCHOOLS

Honorable teachers and my dear friends! The topic of my speech is “Junk food should bebanned in schools”. One often finds children eatingsamosas, breadpakoras, dosas, chowmein, hot dogs, burgers. These foods are tasty but they haveno nutritional value. They are rich in fats, carbohydrates, sugar and salt. Such foods are themain cause of blood pressure, obesity, hypertensionetc. So they need to be banned from schools as theycause these disorders. Rather children should beserved cooked meals like dal, chapati, rice, freshfruits and salads as these foods are rich innutrition. So let the children become disease free.Let’s ban junk foods from schools.

Thank you

7. HOW TREES AND PLANTS ARE IMPORTANTTO US

Honourable principal, respected teachers and mydear friends. The topic of my speech today is “Howtrees and plants are important to us”.Trees provide us a wide variety of delicious fruitsand vegetables. Trees give shade in which peopletake shelter. They provide us wood for makingfurniture, doors and windows. They supply usoxygen which we breath in. They take away theharmful carbondioxide from the air and use it tomake food for us. Trees also provide dyes, chemicals, medicines, rubber, beverages liketea, coffee, etc. They also prevent soil erosion, and help prevent floods. In fact if trees and plantswere not there, life on the earth would haveceased to exist. So it is rightly said that trees areour lifeline; we just cannot live live without them.
