Assignment 6 - Documents with Transcriptions

This assignment will enable you to use your skills to abstract and summarize a variety of original hand written documents. Please refer to Genealogy Standards, Chapter 3, section Collecting Data. In addition, you can also refer to the course Skills: Transcribing, Abstracting & Extracting

course for instructions on these processes. In this assignment you will be asked to study six original documents (or parts thereof). These can be found on the following pages. They all have something to do with a particular piece of land―four mortgages, a farm lease and a release of a dower. They all have the same (or very nearly the same) surname and location in common.

Note: You may or not be familiar with these types of land records. However, it should not affect your ability to abstract these records.

Each page from the document has been individually labelled for your convenience. This does not mean that they are separate documents, and the abstraction is of the document as a whole, not as individual pages. For example, Exhibit 1 has five parts labelled 1A through 1E, but they are all parts of the one document. We are not showing you the entire document in every case, only the part that would be of value to your investigation. Your goal will be to summarize the information found within these documents and explain how they have lead you to certain assertions regarding the Kinnear/Kinner family.
