Guest Newsletter www.VirtualArtAcademy.com VOLUME 9 ISSUE 3 PART 2 MAR 2013 MARCH NEWSLETTER PART T WO Here is an assignment, which will help to reinforce what you learned in the lesson (see this month’s newsletter Part 1). ASSIGNMENT - COLOR MAPS TIME 2 hours. 12 studies of 10 minutes each. PURPOSE The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn to see color accurately. This is essential for developing color harmony in your paintings. WHAT TO DO 1. Set up your easel outdoors, anywhere, and look in any direction. 2. Paint a color map of the four or five shapes you see. Choose shapes that are touching each other. You have ten minutes to match the color as precisely as you can. After ten minutes, stop this color map. 3. Turn around and look in another direction at some different shapes. 4. Paint another color map. 5. At the same spot, repeat until you can see no more interesting groups of colors. TIPS It is often a good idea to zoom in close to a part of a distant scene, or to look at something very close to you. You may look for saturated color spots against grayed color spots. Alternatively, look for areas that have shapes close together with analogous colors. For example find an area where there are a variety of greens of different temperatures. Or a family of reds, such as crimsons and red oranges.Example

CHAGALL

Colorful dreams and tales. Chagall'sworld full of everyday miracles. TheBelarusian painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is widely regarded as epitomiz-ing the “painter as poet”. The world-wide admiration he commandedremains unparalleled by any artist of thecentury. Chagall's paintings, steeped inmythology and mysticism, portray col-orful dreams and tales that are deeplyrooted in his Russian Jewish origins.

The memories and yearning they evoke recall his nativeVitebsk, and the great events that mark the life of ordinary peo-ple: birth, love, marriage and death. They tell of a world full ofeveryday miracles - in the room of lovers, on the streets ofVitebsk, beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Heaven and earthseem to meet in a topsy-turvy world in which whimsical figuresof people and animals float through the air with gravity-defyingserenity. Buy it from Amazon US Buy it from Amazon UK
