ASSET MANAGEMENT DELIVERY: POWER STATION IN TASMANIA

Overview

UGL is the leader of providing clients with full asset management services and has applied the unique end-to-end delivery model to a project contracted from Aurora Energy in Tasmania, Australia.

Aurora Energy needed UGL to provide them with the design, supply, installation and commission of new gas-fired power equipment at their Tamar Valley Power Station.

The Challenge

Aurora Energy needed a solution to find an alternative source of power to reduce the region's dependence on brown coal generated electricity as well as hydroelectric power.

With the idea of implementing an alternative power generating source, ULG was contracted to develop a gas-fired power station.

The Project

Following the asset management procedures set in place by UGL, fast-paced construction began to produce a 210MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant and a set of 180MW open cycle gas turbines.

The Combined cycle plant included:• Mitsubishi 701DA gas turbine• a steam turbine• cooling tower

The open cycle plant included:• 3 existing P&W FT8 gas turbines• a new Rolls Royce Trent 60

Implementation Components

UGL operated on the site with 3 stages of implementation that included:

Stage 1• installed the Rolls Royce Trent 60 gas turbine• installed the 100kV switchyard

Stage 2

• designed, supply and installed a water treatment plant

Stage 3• installed the 220kV switchyard• installed of the gas and steam turbines, cooling tower and

transformers

Outcome

During the peak of construction, there was nearly 1,000 personnel who worked on the production site, which translated into a boosted local economy. Over 6 million hours of labor hours were put in on the project and it resulted in the reduction of brown coal and hydroelectric power generation due to the implementation of the gas-fired power stations.
