CASAS National Summer Institute

Come join CASAS in a celebration of 30 years of service to students and adult education professionals. Since 1980 CASAS has grown from offering one test series in one state to offering many series and resources to states across the nation and to Asia, the Americas, the Pacific Rim, and beyond. This is your chance to meet and work with administrators, instructors, and others making a difference for millions of adult learners. You’ll come away with more knowledge about your assessment options, accountability requirements, instructional resources, and program development.

This year’s 30th anniversary Summer Institute offers you: • Training you need to use CASAS assessment efficiently and effectively!• Computer lab sessions giving you hands-on experience with CASAS eTests and TOPSpro software• Professional development workshops covering technology, assessment, and other areas• Work groups focusing on key issues and ongoing development• Expanded poster session recognizing “Best Practices” (Nominate your agency now!)• Resource and Tech room where you’ll be able to view CASAS assessments and resources • Hosted networking luncheon with all attendees (included in registration fee)• Friday night social for all attendees (included in registration fee; guests extra)

Testing accommodations provide learners with physical and mental disabilities access to full participation in educational opportunities, including standardized testing, enabling them to demonstrate their skills and abilities without interference from sensory, motor, language, or psychological functioning barriers caused by the disability itself. Accommodations in testing alter the conditions for administering a test or change the nature of an assessment instrument allowing those with disabilities to demonstrate more accurately their skills and abilities. Appropriate accommodations meet the needs of examinees without changing what a test is intended to measure. It is important to note that not all learners with disabilities need testing accommodations.

For more information, refer to the Guidelines for Providing Accommodations Using CASAS Assessment for Learners with Disabilities. Agencies may call CASAS to provide additional information on documentation of a disability and testing accommodations not listed in the guidelines.

Low-Level Literacy Touch-Screen AssessmentAs of the January 2010 publication of this catalog, CASAS is continuing to field-test its newly developed Low-Level Literacy Touch-Screen Assessment. This new assessment will offer a valid and reliable standardized intake process and assessment to measure the basic literacy and oral English language skills of low literacy level adult English Language Learners. Currently no such assessment is available in English in the United States or internationally. The use of touch-screen technology offers literacy learners and administering agencies an accessible and affordable testing option in place of paper delivery. This project is funded by the Florida Department of Education and will be available to agencies nationally when it is completed in early fall 2010.

Check www.casas.org for updates about the new Low-Level Literacy Touch-Screen Assessment.
