• Navy officers manage, lead, train and take responsibility for maintaining the team spirit and safety of the Navy’s non-commissioned officers and sailors in both peacetime and wartime.

• Navy officers mainly work in the seaman, aviation, supply and engineering fields, as well as in various support specialisations.

• They adhered or satisfy “the laws of the land”.

• They consist of statutes and laws enacted by the legislature and the rules and regulations created by various departments, governmental bodies.

• They protect the Australian country and its citizens.

• The Navy is part of the Defence Force which also includes the Australian Air Force and the Australian Army.

• These are all part of the Australian Government.

• The Navy Officer can specialise in different fields:– Aeronautical Engineering Officer– Aviation Warfare Officer– Aviation Officer (Pilot)– Dental Officer– Marine Engineering Officer– Medical/ Nursing Officer– Maritime Warfare Officer– Supply Officer– Training Systems Officer– Weapons Systems Officer– Legal Officer

• Maintains Navy aircraft and associated systems• Flies Navy plans and helicopters from the Navy

Air Station in NSW or from vessels at sea• Maintains mechanical and electrical systems and

repairs any damage to the structure of the vessel• Responsible for the control and safety of the ship.

With further training they can specialise in Navigation and warfare

• Manages the Navy’s purchasing and distribution systems, personnel, finances, logistics planning, catering and financial accounting

• Maintenance and functioning of a ship’s weapons and their systems. Onshore they perform duties such as providing technical training to sailor and maintaining shore installations.

• The other two roles which are:

– The Australian Army and

– The Australian Air Force

• Both follow the same Legislation

• Commonwealth Consolidation Acts – Defence Act 1903

• The Defence Force consists of 3 arms, namely, the Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Australian Air Force.

• The main reason for the Australian Navy is to protect the Australian borders from Illegal Immigrants and Illegal importations

• Protect the populations when under attack from terrorist

• Provide relief aid to countries who have suffered a natural disaster

• Depending on the role and if the officer gets chosen to be on the front line, the risks to their life can be significantly high

• Everyday duties can have a low risk associated with their role where others can have a higher risk depending on the role

• This can be mitigated by following the safety guidelines attached to the role
