BSN Program Outcome #1. Use emerging patient care technologies and information systems to support safe and effective nursing practice. RESULTS:

A. NCLEX Results: The NCLEX Program Reports were used to compare our students to all graduates in Nevada. However, there is a lag time before NCLEX (the national nursing exam for RN licensure) results are available after students graduate. For the purposes of this report, the NCLEX Program Reports for Nursing Process is reported for the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 (the latest available report).

B. HESI Results: The HESI Exit Exam a standardized exam, given immediately prior to graduation, was selected to evaluate outcome

#1. This is a proctored exam which receives weight towards students’ final grades. Therefore, we believe results are a serious reflection of the students’ mastery of outcomes. The HESI exam performance level identifies a scoring interval that is a prediction of student NCLEX success.

4. Use of results. What program changes are indicated, and how will they be implemented? Include a description of who will review and act on the findings. If none, describe why changes are not needed. This is the first full comprehensive review of all 8 outcomes in the new curriculum which began in the Fall of 2010. Last year, the SON had very limited data, however the University Assessment Report was brought by the BSN Coordinator to Academic Affairs Council (AAC) to review the measures that were in place. AAC approved the measures and asked for additional information including average GPA upon graduation and qualitative comments made by students on the exit survey. Each semester the BSN coordinator provided a summary of trends on the exit surveys for faculty to discuss in our Faculty Organization meeting. In addition, average GPA has been added to this report. This report will once again be shared with AAC and brought to faculty through our Faculty Organization meeting. The BSN Coordinator will also meet with Academic Affairs Council to review the data from this report and suggest recommendations for improving the program where such improvements are warranted (for example, continuing to improve student’s knowledge base on health policy and systems as this was the outcome we continue to rate the lowest in- 2.88). These improvements will be presented to the faculty each spring semester for their approval, and the BSN Coordinator will work with faculty involved to implement the improvements. These improvements will then be brought back to AAC for evaluation. 5. Progress. Describe program changes that have been recommended in past reports. What progress has been made since the recommendation? As of our last report to the University, we had graduated our first class in the new curriculum and were in the process of developing a comprehensive and thorough program assessment report which has been completed. We have now been able to review data and can see that the improvements we made in the new curriculum help the success of our students. This report shows that our students are rating us well in most program outcomes with the exception of outcome #3 on healthcare policy, finance and regulatory environments. Despite their ranking on this outcome students continue to test at the recommended level on the HESI subscales related to this content area. This will be an area of focus for 2013. Overall, 98% of our students passed the NCLEX licensing exam on the first attempt, 99% report being satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of their education and 91% would recommend our program to others. This speaks to the time and energy faculty have put into their individual teaching and the program overall. In addition our students continue to excel on HESI standardized testing throughout the curriculum often scoring 100 points or more over the national mean. This year faculty will be emphasizing remediation based on testing reports to assist students in focusing on areas of weakness to improve their knowledge base and testing skills. Another strategy we have for student retention and success is our Student Success Facilitator. This new position was added in the summer of 12 to work directly with our level 1 students. This person provides one on one support and study sessions for students, facilitates our new student to student mentoring program and provides information on time management and success strategies.

This year faculty will also be working hard to incorporate QSEN competencies into the curriculum. The progress for this has started already. The BSN Coordinator worked with AAC to match QSEN competencies to our program outcomes. A table has been created for faculty to include in each course syllabus. Faculty has been asked to have these competencies in their course syllabus starting Summer 13. In addition, a faculty development session was held on March 18, 2013 to educate faculty on the QSEN competencies and provide direction as to how to incorporate them into their course/s. Simulation continues to be an important aspect of our program. The SON has been active in scenario writing and using standardized patients to enhance learning. This year the focus will be on using simulation at every level and in most courses, enhancing our scenarios and debriefing and to continue collecting data and get our research published. On our exit surveys, 77% of students reported being satisfied or very satisfied with simulation. However, their comments reflected that they wanted more time in simulation. Top Priorities for 2013: To successfully complete our CCNE accreditation Continue to enhance student retention Integrate QSEN Competencies into the curriculum Enhance the use of simulation throughout the program
