Can we research gun violence?
NRA & manufactures of guns and ammo successfully lobbied for a law that now makes it illegal for the CDC to research gun violence.
Privately funded gun research may be done.

![Page 56: Assessment of likelihood of a school shooting incident](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051517/627f03a09bcecd3a00527b38/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
MethodologyA school incident was defined as…any incident where (i) a current student or recent former student attacked
someone at his or her school with lethal means (e.g., a gun or knife); and,
(ii) where the student attacker purposefully chose his or her school as the location of the attack.
![Page 57: Assessment of likelihood of a school shooting incident](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051517/627f03a09bcecd3a00527b38/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
1. One-third were “loners.”2. 3/4 felt bullied or persecuted3. 98% had experienced a loss, were feeling
desperate & depressed.4. 81% told a friend, prior.5. 59% told more than one friend prior.6. 88% of the time, at least one adult was
concerned.7. Rarely directly threatened the intended
target, prior to shooting.
![Page 58: Assessment of likelihood of a school shooting incident](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051517/627f03a09bcecd3a00527b38/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
8. There is no good “profile.” (????)9. Most were A/B students. Few “F”
students.10.Few had no friends, but several had
“fringe” friends.
![Page 59: Assessment of likelihood of a school shooting incident](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051517/627f03a09bcecd3a00527b38/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
Nice information, but how do we use that
information to
identify & intervene?
![Page 60: Assessment of likelihood of a school shooting incident](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051517/627f03a09bcecd3a00527b38/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
Why there is no profile—because the vast majority of students who are mostly loners, who have been bullied or persecuted, who have expressed violent intentions and who have access to guns…do not become shooters.
![Page 61: Assessment of likelihood of a school shooting incident](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051517/627f03a09bcecd3a00527b38/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
