Project Goal:

Digitally map and describe riparian vegetation in Columbia Plateau Province subbasins within Oregon.

Page 3: Assess Riparian Condition Through Spectrometric Imaging Of Riparian Vegetation Project ID: 25011 Presented by Brian Kasper Water Quality Analyst/Modeler

Proposal Area:

~24,700 miles of streamsRed = 3,381 miles on 1998 303(d) List

Why?

• Oregon must develop Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for all 303(d) listed water bodies.

• TMDLs require pollution source assessments and computer modeling.

• Water quality (i.e., temperature) depends upon riparian vegetation conditions.

Beneficial Uses:

• TMDL development & implementation is aimed at Salmonid preservation.

• Effectiveness of current riparian conditions on water quality may be assessed.

• Watershed enhancement projects can be prioritized based upon the riparian assessment.
