“Understanding Our Students, Understanding Ourselves…

The past decade has seen incredible growth in our Graduate and Professional (GnP) school student populations, which now represent the majority of our students. GnP students embody virtually every facet of diversity, including biographical, life experiences, and background. Coupled with their academic program diversity including: length, design, and expectations those working with this population have a monumental task. Knowing our students is a priority, as we serve, learn, and process their needs one trend emerges above them all.

Collaborating with the Office of Assessment and Professional Development Programs the Division is systematically looking into current services and outreach efforts. Focus groups and standardized questions were utilized in the Fall Semester with both our GnP students and Student Affairs departments.

Coordinating efforts is critically important, as our students’ change we must change our outreach and support models. That trend we noticed; personal, individual touch. Providing this service can be challenging on resources, but is necessary. Developing a systems approach along with structures and resources will be part of our next steps. Collectively, Student Affairs is developing a strategic plan for this population. Stay tuned as the plan develops, because implementation will be our collective responsibility.

In the interim, we invite you to share your stories and experiences working with graduate and professional

students. Additionally, I would like to challenge all in the Division to think critically about how we share information

and develop a framework that to support these students.

Duke Groups • Event registration in DukeGroups went live earlier in the Fall Semester.

UCAE is conducting two surveys to determine the utility and effectiveness of the event registration process. One survey is for students and the other is for staff who participated in the event approval process .

Ally Training • CSGD administered a pre and post survey for students and staff who

registered for Ally Training. The survey provided an opportunity to participants to self disclose and identify their knowledge, skills and competency in relation to the LGBT community. The data will be used to inform future Ally Training, Advances Ally Training and other programmatic services and initiatives in the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity

Family Weekend • Parent and Family Programs is administering their annual Family Weekend

survey. The data will help inform key programming and communication decisions and further the office’s mission to facilitate opportunities for parents and their students to connect on campus and future programs and events.

• Data collected from the 2012 Survey indicated that 25.3% of participates provided feedback

• Recommendations from 2012 included: o Publish and advertise date of Family Weekend earlier to families o Publish event schedule earlier online o Diversify programming options to encourage repeat visitors o Expand interaction of faculty members during Weekend programming

overall o Work to ensure FW 2013 takes place during the weekend of a home

football game o Incorporate more ways for families to interact with each other,

perhaps based on hometown or student residence o Continue to use bright orange shirts to designate staff volunteers o Improve parking signage and provided camps maps

Campout

• In cooperation with the Dean of Students Office, the Graduate Basketball Committee is conducting an assessment to better understand graduate and professional student perceptions of Campout. The data will help inform other potential events and experiences to be held in concert with Campout.

Current  Assessments  Cont.  Veterans Support

• The Dean of Students Office is conducting a survey to understand the needs and types of resources needed by Duke students who are also veterans. One essential question is seeking student interest in a veteran’s support group.

Learning Communities • The Center for Multicultural Affairs is conducting an assessment of the utility

and effectiveness of the Orgo and Physics Learning Communities offered during the Fall Semester.

Mid-Year Pulse • The Career Center is preparing to administer the Mid-Year Pulse to the Class of

2014. This will be the third iteration of the survey. In the past, the data has played a pivotal role in assisting Career Center staff to know where to allocate time and resources for the spring semester and future programmatic events.
