Assertiveness is about aiming for a win/win solution. All parties should feel that they have reached a successful outcome.

Recognise your preferred style. Do you have a tendency to shy away from any form of conflict or do you run towards it ready for
battle? Once you know this you can start to take a more assertive approach instead.

Learn to effectively and politely say no to requests. Non-assertive behaviour can encourage others to take advantage of someone who
is always willing to put others first.

Listen to others opinions. Being assertive is about having respect for
yourself and others.

Use assertive techniques to help you stay strong in difficult situations. The “broken record” can be effective when you’re really
unable to compromise on an issue.

To really behave assertively you must believe that you can do it. Say to yourself “I am confident, I am assertive, I can do this”.

Use assertive body language. Stand up straight, make eye contact
(but don’t stare!) and be aware of the other person’s personal space.

Consider your rights. You have a right to state your opinion and be respected. Remember – the other person has these rights too.

Go easy on yourself, it takes time to change and you may meet some resistance along the way but don’t give up.

Be careful not to go too far and use aggressive behaviour – remember you won’t always get your way but that’s ok.
