Assembling Your NIELSENAluminum Metal Frame

Metal picture frames consist of four frame sides witha Hardware Channel and an inner Art Track for hold-ing the “art sandwich” of glass, matting, artwork andbacking. Metal frames are side loading: the “art sand-wich” is inserted into three sides of the frame, thenthe fourth side is attached. The corners are held to-gether with expansion plates. If your frame packagecame pre-assembled see NOTE: RemovingSpring Clips on page two before beginning dis-assembly.

Arrange one long side and two short sides of yourframe face down on a safe work surface. Stack ascrew plate and a back plate with the “Nielsen” sidesup, making an expansion corner. Insert the expansioncorner plates into the Hardware Channel of the longside with screws up. If the plates do not insert easily,loosen (do not remove) the screws. Attach both shortsides to the long side, forming a “U” shape. Tightenall four screws just enough to hold the frame together.You will adjust and tighten the expansion plates later.

Attach your artowrk to the mat or backing. Clean yourglass and place it on top of the matted/backed art-work, making an “art sandwich”. Make sure there isno dust or finger prints between the glass and art-work. Now turn your three sided frame face up andcarefully slide the “art sandwich” into the frame onthe Art Track. When the “art sandwich” is all the wayin, carefully turn the frame face down again and pro-ceed to Step 3.

Insert the remaining expansion plates into both endsof the fourth (long) side and then carefully slide theplates into the Hardware Channels of the “U”. Tightenthe screws to hold the forth side in place.

Inspect the face of your frame to make sure the cor-ners are closing at the front. If adjustment is needed,loosen the screws one corner at a time, gently tapthe sides of the corner together with the butt of yourscrew driver. Hold the corner firmly and re-tighten thescrews. Repeat as needed for all four corners.

NOTE: Removing Spring Clips

Insert the spring clips between the underside of theHardware Channel and the backing board of your “artsandwich”. The spring clips should be spaced severalinches apart with the curved sides up, toward the un-derside of the Hardware Channel. When disassem-bling the frame be sure to remove these springclips first. See NOTE further below.

Install the wire attachments by tilting them so the screwend slips under the outside edge of the HardwareChannel. If they do not drop in easily, try loosening thescrews. Measure to position them evenly about 1/3 to1/4 the length from the top. Tighten the screws. Loopthe wire through the hole twice then wrap the end of thewire around the line while pulling it taught. Repeat forthe opposite side. Remove the bumpon wall protectorsfrom their paper backings and adhere them to the twobottom corners of your frame.

Framed artwork cangive years of enjoy-ment. Keep in mindthat art can be sensi-tive to light and atmos-pheric conditions. Werecommend usingacid-free and lignin-free matting and UVprotective glass oracrylic to help protectyour art from fadingand discoloration.  Wecan upgrade any ofour frames to include such protection. Also, note thateven with the use of UV glass, valuable art shouldnever be hung in the path of direct sunlight, on moistoutside walls, or on walls that change temperaturethroughout the day. Before a metal frame can be disassembled thespring clips must be extracted. Reach under theHardware Channel with needlenose pliers and care-fully pull them out. Caution is advised because thespring clips can pop-up suddenly. Once all spring clipshave been removed, the expansion screws can beloosened on both corners of a long side, the sideslipped off and the “art sandwich” removed.
