Product DescriptionType 304 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy containing18% chrome and 8% nickel. The alloy has a lower carboncontent which minimizes chromium carbide precipitationdue to welding and its susceptibility to intergranularcorrosion. Weldability and forming properties of Type 304are excellent whilst machinability is reasonable. The alloyalso benefits from very good drawability. A combination oflow yield strength and high elongation allows for theforming of complex shapes, although it should be notedthat the material hardens rapidly. Type 304L is the lowcarbon version of 304, does not require post-weldannealing and so is extensively used in heavy gaugecomponents (over about 6mm).
