PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Everyone:
This summer is flying by so fast with many great changes for our Chapter. This season is going to be fun and look forward to many new exciting topics for our meet-ings.
I want to highlight that we have many Board changes and addi-tions such as Marc Pisarek taking over the reins of the Newsletter. This has allowed David Smith to
become our new VP of Technical and our meeting schedule is already full for the remainder of this year.
Ken Clark has returned as our VP Legislative and Dawn’s new role is VP Education with this year’s program developed and ready to be posted. I am happy to have James Wardell join our team and Jim will serve as our correspondence secretary and serve on committees as the need arises. Steve Ziga is back and will help on the Product show with Ernie Rink and me.
I am proud to serve with these dedicated members but in addition we have several members that serve on National Committees, Bill O’Donnell our treasurer also serves on the Fellowship committee, Steve Ziga serves as Chair of the Technical pro-gram and Dawn Bishop serves on the committee for Women of ASPE.
In closing let us not forget our Region One Director Paulie Silvestre. Paulie has never missed a beat in performing his duties even under extreme personal challenges and I am sure all our Board members have found inspiration from his dedication to not only the National but our great Philadelphia Chap-ter.
So join me and this great Chapter this Fall and par-ticipate in meetings, Plumbing classes, the Golf out-ing and everything we strive to offer to further your education and experience as a member of the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLUMBING ENGINEERS.
Best regards to all,
Mike

TECHNICAL CORNER
Hello Everyone:
Early in June, Dawn Bishop and I attended the Region one meet-ing. To say the least I was excited but also clueless as to what would be forthcoming. Yes I had the agenda and was aware of the topics that would be addressed and felt I could handle that no
problem!
Our Greet and meet on Friday night was very informal and the Connecticut
Chapter President Nicole M Parker was our host that had everyone talking and laughing. You could walk around the room introduce yourself and within a few minutes the name Paul Silvestre would be heard. Not to my surprise but to my proud friendship with Paulie as we know him, the love and respect for him were so much the words everyone would utter.
The challenges and determination by Paulie is what in-spires us all. I personally hope that I can serve our Chapter well and make everyone as proud of our Chapter as all our past Board Officers and members are today.
As the meeting commenced Billy Smith asked all the Chapter current Presidents to briefly discuss the individu-al Chapter success and other endeavors so we all could hear and take notes. Now the rookie that I am to these meetings I soon realized just how successful our region is and I took notes as fast as my pen could write.
Dawn and I will compile our notes and develop a report to be presented very soon. One funny thing happened during the meeting when the fire alarm went off with flashing lights and annunciators blasting our ears. Once we were all outside Billy Smith, our CEO and meeting presenter, walked around using skype looking at Paulie on his screen we all said hello and wished Paulie well. To say the least, many of us felt ourselves welling up as Paulie was crying and you knew just what we all mean to him. Such dedication is very rare and I for one only hope we can continue to build our chapter and make all our members very proud to say they are a member in the Philadelphia Chapter.
This is my last Vice-President Technical article as I am now your President. Dave Smith is now your Vice-President Technical and will be carrying on with the arti-cles starting in September.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS HAPPY SUMMER! We hope you are enjoy-ing the heat and hopeful-ly some down time with family and friends. Dur-ing ASPE’s hiatus, please think about our Fall edu-
cational programs which will resume in September and also about attend-ing the Phoenix Convention and Expo on October 28 – November 2. There are some great educational programs planned, along with the first WOA- Women of ASPE one day seminar and of course the manufacturers’ booths which will be displaying a great deal
of new products. Please see my May article for the great opportunities at this year’s convention. The Philadel-phia ASPE Chapter will be sending seven (7) delegates to the show, so if there are some topics you’d like us to address, please contact one of your board members. Last month, the NFPA annual conven-tion was held in Las Vegas. There were attendees from over the world and they had some great questions. In P/E’s June publication, there’s an ad for a FREE July 21st (2pm CDT) webinar on fire sprinkler systems and

SPEAKING OUT Hi All – After a much needed hiatus, I am glad to be back serving the Philadelphia Chapter of ASPE. The Chapter has continued on strongly during the last
Board term and it’s great to see that we’ve had much growth in our membership base.
Membership has its privileges. Do you get the most out of yours? Each of us are different and have different needs. You could be working at a larger engineering firm with a larger plumbing department or working as the only plumbing engineer in
a small firm. In both cases being a mem-ber of our society offers the same great rewards. Networking and education are the two greatest rewards in my opinion. You can mingle with other engineers, af-filiates, code officials or contractors at our meetings. I know I always have a job on my mind where I may be undecided on a thing or two in my designs. It’s such a great thing to bounce around ideas with your peers. An affiliate may help you with an equipment selection. A contrac-tor may give insight on preferred (or real-istic) installation practices. An engineer may affirm or critique your choices (its ok to be criticized in the right setting!). A

code official will lend you their opinion so that your plans may go through permitting un-scathed. These are all excellent outcomes right?!? And as a result, you just became more informed and a better engineer now and for the future. By participating in engineering societies, you have the opportunity to make relationships that can help your career or help someone else’s for many, many years to come. What do you want from your member-ship? If you say you want text books, that’s just the first rung in the membership ladder. Keep on climbing my friends!
