Background:

There has been a tremendous demand for starting classes in M.Sc.

Applied Psychology, as this facility was not available in this whole region. So the

program of M.Sc. Applied Psychology was started in the year 2000. A package of

latest courses has been developed to equip the students with the latest

techniques and concepts in the field of Applied Psychology. This program is

running under semester system and classes are held in the evening. Realizing

the significance of this popular social science, of starting this program initiative

was taken to address the socioeconomic and cultural issues and their policy

implications. Initially, this department was the part of Institute of Management

Sciences (IMS) and started on self-finance basis. Later on, in 2005, since the

approval of PC-I from Higher Education Commission (HEC), this department has

been working as an independent unit.

Keeping in view the advancement in various disciplines of social sciences

and the quality of education provided in the best universities of the world, the

Bahauddin Zakariya University has structured this Applied Psychology program

as a combination of research and course work.

History

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and cognitive processes

Psychology is curious, interesting and pragmatic. It attempts to comprehend

human nature, and hence basic research in this field helps us to improve the

quality of our lives and establish a society based upon principles of justice and

equity. The scope of psychology is an ever expanding phenomenon. Now

psychological knowledge is applied to solve problems in such diverse areas, as,

management, environment, business, education, industry, space, sports, law,

justice, hospital, linguistics, psychotherapy, counseling and guidance and critical

evaluation of literature and other fine arts. Amongst the various branches of

Psychology, undoubtedly, Clinical Psychology is the most important applied area.

Early Developments and Recognitions

Prof. Khalid Saeed and Dr. Sarwat Sultan worked very hard for the

development programs of Applied Psychology Department. They search a

number of excellent Books, introduced Multi Media and purchased almost all

important Psychological Tests for the Department.

Initially, Master’s program was started and then gradually Advance Diploma

in Clinical Psychology, M.phil in Psychology and BS 4 years with major in

Psychology were introduced in this Department.

Among the pioneer external examiners, Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Pirzada was very

kind enough to conduct the Viva Voce Examination in the Masters and Advance

Diploma in Clinical Psychology Thesis. His approach was very creative and

productive with a positive critical evaluation.

Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Pirzada also served as Head of Department for a short

period. He regularized the office discipline with filing system and demanded

budget for the developmental programs including posts of clerical/office staff,

furniture and split AC’s, seminar rooms, independent computer lab, psychological

testing room and many other miscellaneous items from the worthy Vice

Chancellor, more over, he also worked very hard with the M.Phil students

regarding their academic and job assignments and as an internal supervisor.

He also insisted the higher authorities to provide the Departments own

transport including Air Conditioned Flying Coach and Bus for clinical, educational

and excursion assignments and tours for the students. Further for the very first

time, during his tenure students participated in Two International Conferences of

Pakistan Psychological Association at Lahore College for Women University,

Lahore and in the Department of Applied Psychology University of the Punjab,

Lahore.

Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Pirzada, Research

Based Scientific Papers were presented by the Staff Members and Students in

these Two Conferences and were highly acknowledged and received

appreciations from all the participants. B.Z. University, Multan was also honored

when Dr. Nadeem Pirzada was Elected as a Senior Vice President by all the

Provinces of Pakistan.

A credit also goes to him, when for the very first time he invited all Ph.D

Faculty Members in the Viva Voce Examination of Master’s and M.Phil programs.

Among these Ph.D Faculty Members, were Dr. Azam Tahir from Quetta

University, Dr. Anees-ul-Haq from National Institute of Psychology Islamabad, Dr.

Abbas Ali Asim from Islamia University Bahwalpur and Dr. Khalid Bhatti from

Govt. College University Faisalabad.

He also practically struggled for the regularization and extension in the

tenure of Temporary Teaching Faculty in the meeting with Vice Chancellor and

successfully achieved the targets for the Advancement of the Department of

Applied Psychology. All these achievements are on the record of B.Z. University

Multan.

The Department of Applied Psychology, Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan is

charged with the responsibility for developing, maintaining, and delivering

undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate curricula in psychology. The

Department is dedicated to the ideal that an understanding of psychological

Computer Lab:

The Department also houses a computer laboratory having 50 P-IV

systems connected with the wireless network. This laboratory has not only been

well equipped with multimedia but it also provides free access to the HEC Digital

Library from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Department has well established testing lab with more than 200

psychological test.

Department also has well established experimental lab with up dated

instruments.

Respected chairperson of the department, Dr. Sarwat Sultan has over 30

articles to her credit. Credit of the being the part of the list of HEC

approved supervisors goes to her.

Teachers and students of the department of Applied Psychology are

excelled in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

As an objective of the Quality Enhancement Program department also

planning to launch its own Research Journal.
