Assignment # 7

Name: Fang Yin

Lesson Topic: Science

Grade: Grade 3

Length of time: minutes

Topic: Life Cycle of Animal and Plant

Description of the class

This class is made for the third grade science class of Chinese Adventist International

School. The Chinese Adventist International School is organized by several Adventist churches in

China. The school is located in a small beautiful city called Kunming in Yunnan Province. The

weather of four seasons is like spring, therefore people named here ‘Spring City’. The teachers

are from different countries and they all speak American English. This institution provides

education from pre-K to grade 6 and there are 700 students and 80 faculties and staffs in the

campus to help this education system running.

The local student occupy 60% of the whole population, and 14% of students are from other areas

of China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. 12% of students are from western countries,

such as America, Canada, and New Zealand. 8% of students are from Taiwan and 6% are from

Korea. Due to the diversity of nationality, there are various religions too. As the account shows,

Page 4: Asia-Pacific International Universityfangyineportfolio.weebly.com/uploads/3/7/9/9/37992929/... · 2018-10-15 · 1 Asia-Pacific International University Assignment 07 SUBMITTED IN

only 40% of students are Adventists and 13% are Christian too but from other dominations. The

rest is included 17% of Buddhist, 15% of Atheists and 5% of Catholicism.

The students of this school are 344 females 356 males. As there are majority Asian

students, English is not their first language. They have chosen this school due to two reasons, first

is this is a Adventist school, second is this is an English speaking school where the non-English

speaker can train themselves with fluent English. At the same time, all the teachers of this school

are Adventists and they were all graduated from qualified university, they are good at teaching

children and they have a lot of teaching experiences. This is the biggest reason for those parents

to trust in this institution.

This school has adopted American curriculum which puts more emphasis on children

centered and hands on teaching. The school offers English, Math, science, PE, Bible classes and

other extra- curriculum activities. To this science class, the subject will be taught by one teacher,

and several formative assessments will be given at the end of each unit. However, summative

assessment will be given too. This summative assessment is needed to checking the progress of

the students and it makes them to be aware of their own revision on this subject.

The purpose of assessment

This unit test defines as formative assessment. This test helps teacher to measure the

progress of students as they finish learning this unit. It also provides a chance for the

students to see their strengths and weaknesses. This assessment can be seen as an

evaluation that provides feedback for students to adjust their learning strategies and also

for the teacher to adjust their teaching style. However, when parents are involved, this

assessment can provide information to the parents in order to supervise their kids. In the

form of formative assessment, it continuously measures the learning process of students

and how are they doing in order to master the knowledge of these two units.

Explanation for the test items

Section A: True and False Items: it is used to check students’ ability to distinguish

facts and opinions.

Section B: Multiple Choice items: it is used to measure students’ ability of

understanding and application of the principles, and interpret cause-effect

relationships.

Section C: Matching: it is used to assess students’ ability to identify the accurate

answer according to what they have learned.

Page 11: Asia-Pacific International Universityfangyineportfolio.weebly.com/uploads/3/7/9/9/37992929/... · 2018-10-15 · 1 Asia-Pacific International University Assignment 07 SUBMITTED IN

11

Section D: short answers: it is used to test students about specific knowledge

and simple interpretation of information about the units. In this section,

students need to recall the information or be able to compute the answer.

Section E: Interpretive Exercise items: it is used to assess students’ ability to

interpret written materials, charts, graphs, maps, pictures and reference

source. Students have to be able to measure more complex learning

outcomes and measure separate aspects of problems solving skills.

Section F: Restricted-response essay: it is used mainly to assess learning

outcomes that cannot be assessed with objective test items. Students have

to think critically and they have the freedom of response to the objective. It

requires higher order thinking skills toward the subject.

44. Expected answer:

The tree Nancy has met is a kind of Conifer. Conifer has needle or brush-like leaves. Each seed made by a plant is able to produce a new plant. For the seed to be produced, the plant needs light, water, oxygen, and nutrients. And the number of seeds that a plant makes depends on how many flowers are pollinated.

Self-Report

This can be my first time constructing my own test paper and I’ve

found that this even inspired me to go back and review the knowledge

together with students while making each question. After the first

assignment has turned in, I found there are tiny parts needed to be

revised in order to match with the previous assignment while I started

doing my second assignment. And I realized this becomes a continuous

effect when I do the other ones till the end. This process of revising is

actually a self monitoring process or self evaluating process. This helped

me to manage my own work to be more organized and effective. And it is

a record to let myself see the weakness and strength that I have. While

things have been on the half way, I found I become more familiar with

the construction work, but sometimes I was feeling like ‘lack of ideas’ in

my mind. Therefore, I started to search more information on internet.

Seeing the works of others gave me a lot of encouragements and ideas,

although I was struggling with the first two construction assignment. I

was fine after catching the pattern of construction, and through studying

the advantages and disadvantages of each objective items, it provided

me more ideas of how to put them in the right place.

In the future, I want to have a folder to store all my works in order to

monitor myself, on the other hand, to evaluate the tests I have made. By

doing this, I can give myself a lot of conveniences at the same time make

some improvements on it.

By constructing this test paper and evaluating the work of myself, I

realized that making a good quality test is not easy. Especially I have to

consider of including the knowledge students have learned without

repeating doing the same question in different test items. However,

avoiding finding answers from the questions itself even makes the test

construction harder. Yet, I have learned a lot about how to construct a

successful test paper, starting from the sequences of the test items, and

then the weaknesses and strengths of each test items. Lastly we have the

way of construction. Those steps seem to be simple, but they indicate

the effectiveness of every test paper.
