    Greetings!

Thank you for picking up your copy of the third annual Ashtabula County Local Food Guide!

This guide was developed in collaboration with Ashtabula County Master Gardeners, the Ashtabula Local Food Council, Ashtabula County Community Action Agency, and Ohio State University Extension office of Ashtabula County.

“Local”, “seasonal”, “non-GMO”, “organic”, “heirloom”…. Being an educated consumer these days can often be confusing, frustrating and leave folks feeling left out. It is our goal in publishing this guide to help you shop smart, keep your dollars in our community, and find the healthiest, tastiest products. This “Local” food guide highlights those producers, farmers, and processors who are selling food grown or made in Ashtabula County. We want a guide that is dynamic and reflects the tremendous efforts of the growers, artisans, and leaders in the local food movement from across our county.

We encourage you to use this guide as a tool to support existing relationships, build new ones, and to strengthen our region’s foodshed. Use the guide yourself or share it with a neighbor! It is our hope to make supporting the small business owners who work tirelessly to bring their products into our homes and onto our plates a little bit easier. By eating locally, you contribute to the local economy, preserve open farmland, and support dozens of small business owners.

On behalf of the growers, producers, processors and artisans of Ashtabula County, we want to thank you for your support of local foods.

The 2019 Local Food Guide Team:

My Neighborhood Collaborative The mission of "My Neighborhood" is bringing people and resources together to help revitalize and rebuild a stronger neighborhood where people want to live, work, play and prosper.

As part of this mission, a large community garden is maintained by volunteers at Clifford Kadon Presidential Park at 5835 Madison Ave. in Ashtabula. The garden produces fresh vegetables available through a Farm Share (CSA) program. Full and half shares can be purchased by cash, check or SNAP benefits. Pricing details can be found on Facebook under the Services section. In addition, garden volunteers can use their work time in the garden to pay for weekly shares.

My Neighborhood Collaborative also sponsors the My Neighborhood Marketplace farmers’ market.

Grounds-for-Growth A program of Ashtabula County Community Action Agency, Grounds-for-Growth was started in 2012 to promote healthy nutritious eating habits and increased access to food, in particular fresh, locally grown food for individuals/families that otherwise could not grow, ob-tain, or afford it. By engaging with community partners, Grounds-for-Growth aims to promote food and economic security within the community by raising awareness, sharing best practices and creating opportunities.

This year, Grounds-for-Growth will once again partner with Community Action's WIC Program and the Ashtabula Farmers' Market to conduct the "Super Summer Farmers' Market Education Program." This program provides select WIC families the opportunity to increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. Participants attend a series of educational workshops conducted by the WIC Dieticians and held right at the market. They meet the Farmers' Market vendors and learn where their food comes from, find out what is in-season, experience a hands-on food demonstration (open to the public) using ingredients available at the market, and earn additional coupons for market purchases.

    Because everyone deserves healthy food!

Ashtabula County Community Seed Libraries Started locally by Stephanie Blessing of Red Beet Row and maintained by local gardening volunteers, Seed Libraries house vegetable, herb, fruit, and flower seeds for public use. The aim is to help make healthy food accessible and to build up a community seed stock.

5 seed libraries are available in 2019: Andover Public Library Conneaut Public Library Henderson Memorial Public Library Kingsville Public Library Rock Creek Public Library

Anyone is welcome to take seeds out from the library and plant them at home. Seeds you don’t use, or have from other sources, can be given back to the library. At the end of the growing season, seed collected from your plants can be donated to the library for next year. Seed-saving classes are held by Red Beet Row and the libraries.
