Even a high-end sports car needs to be driven properly, and requires periodic maintenance. Retro-Commissioning is a tool to help operators get high-end results out of their buildings. As our ASHRAE season continues, itis hard to believe we are past themid-point of this ASHRAE year. This month’s theme is ChapterTechnology Transfer Committee

(CTTC). One of the many annualobjectives of the CTTC is participationin the Technology Awards. TheOVC has been very successful in pastyears with a variety of projectswinning Technology Awards at theRegional Level for new andinnovative designs. Jeff Watson is ourcurrent CTTC chair, and I encourageanyone with projects fitting, orquestions about the applicationprocess to contact Jeff. It would begreat to see another strong turnoutfrom our local designers withTechnology Awards submissions.

The Research Promotion campaignis off to a tremendous start this year.Research Promotion is one of themost important yearly goals setdown from Society, and I encourageall individuals and organizations tocontinue with your generousdonations to help us achieve ourgoal. Please speak with AdamGraham directly if you have anyquestions.

A couple weeks ago, several of ourchapter members were fortunateenough to attend the ASHRAEWinter Conference & Expo in LasVegas from January 28 throughFebruary 1, 2017. I’m sure a greattime was had by all in attendance,

and we will likely be hearing sometales of ASHRAE camaraderie foryears to come.

Although I don’t want to get too farahead of myself, March is shaping upto be busy month. On deck, we haveour Career Fair, Curling Bonspiel,second Technical Seminar of theseason, and we will be hosting ourRegion II DRC Doug Cochrane at themonthly program meeting. Watchthis month and next month’scommunique for additional details.

In closing, despite the non-cooperative weather of late, I hopeeverybody gets a chance to getoutdoors and enjoy the upcomingWinterlude activities in whatevercapacity suits you! I look forward toseeing everyone at the next meeting.

Technical Session: Introduction to Control Sequences of Operation

If you have ever felt that Control Sequences are a mystery, then you need to attend this Tech session. RodLancefield of HTS will be giving an introduction to Sequences of Operation. He will be emphasizing that youSTART with a sequence of operation…do not leave it to the end. He will also give an introduction to controlschematics and how to read them. He will go over the main components and their function i.e. Freeze stat, etc.

Next he will outline some resources for further study on this topic which usually gets left to the last minute.

President Abbey Saunders calledthe fourth meeting of the 2016/2017season to order. President Saundersintroduced the Board of Governorsand the Executive.

President Abbey Saunders discussedwhat ASHRAE is, the goal ofASHRAE, its mission and vision. Themeans by which ASHRAE fulfills itsmission such as standards, researchand programs were also discussed.

ASHRAE OVC Past PresidentCathy Godin and current secretaryof MCA Chapter discussed MCA.Local MCA chapter is currentlycelebrating 50 anniversary.

President Elect Adam Grahamdiscussed ASHRAE research andthanked those who have donated sofar this year. Marc Brown Chairmanand Mary Gauthier GeneralManager of the Ottawa MechanicalContractors Association presenteda 750 dollar cheque on behalf of theOttawa MCA to ASHRAE research.Mr. Graham also gave an overview ofwhere the ASHRAE OVC researchcampaign is to date. Researchpromotion raffle tickets for theevenings donated by JCI.

Secretary Chris Fudge introducedthe guests for the evening.

Membership Promotion chair CelineBaribeau introduced the newmembers. There were many newmembers who signed up this month.Membership is currently up over lastyear.

Student Activities co-chair AdrianeMitanni discussed the upcomingcareer fair on March 2nd at CarletonUniversity. There will be studentsat this career fair from Colleges andUniversities from the Ottawa region.

Abbey Saunders invited the table toppresenters to the podium for a shortpresentation. Adam Moonsdiscussed some of the American AirFilter products featured at his tabletop. Raymond Gatt had a table topthat displayed Sanuvox airpurification systems.

President Abbey Saunders introducedthe speaker for the evening EliHoward executive director ofSMACNA Technical Services. Theevening’s topic was SMACNA’s IAQGuidelines for Occupied BuildingsUnder Construction. IAQGuidelines for Occupied Buildingsunder construction 2nd edition is thebasis for the evening discussion.

The document published by SMACNAdoes not cover CCOHS CA OSHAUSA, lead or asbestos abatement. Itdoes cover air pollutants associatedwith construction such as sources ofairborne contaminants and how ABcontaminants move throughbuildings. The document is helpful inplacing contaminant exposures inperspective and hazard assessment.

Sources of air born contaminants arecovered. It is as simple as lookingat what materials are beingdemolished and what tools will beused. How can contaminants movethrough the building? Sealants forduct work might not be appropriatethough they are good on ABC front.

How contaminants move throughbuildings? Via the air and aredetected by eyes and nose. Itcomes down to two issues; whatbuildings materials are beingdemolished or disturbed and whatmachinery is being used? Whatneeds to be considered is how thearea under construction can be keptat a lower pressure than the rest ofthe building.

A full blown study of the building andactivities to occur in the constructionprocess needs to be done prior tostarting the project. Ventilationeffectiveness needs to be review viaASRHAE 62.1. Thermal comfortASHRAE 55 should also be looked at.If lead or asbestos is present dealwith those first prior to beginning theconstruction process.

Chapter 3 covers control measures.This is the standard most groupssuch as ASHRAE, USGBC etc… use intheir specifications. Do not usepermanent HVAC for constructionsite’s air condition needs. Blockall intake openings within theconstruction area. LEED requiresMERV 13 filters when using duringconstruction. Bypass around filtersis a major problem when runningpermanent equipment duringconstruction (even with MERV13filters). Product substitution such aslow VOC paints /adhesive are greatfor reducing air born contaminantsbut might not be appropriate for theproject or geographic location.

Pathway interruption such as barriersor pressurization are effective meansto control ABC’s.

Plastic sheathing and tape can beused for certain applications.Pressurization should always beconsidered. Keeping constructionzone at a relative low pressure tooccupied spaces keeps ABC fromgetting into occupied spaces.

Suppress dust with wetting agents orsweeping compounds. Increasefrequency based on visualinspections of the area. HEPAvacuums, central vacuums withoutside exhaust should be used so asto not increase ABC’s.

Extremely odorous or dustgenerating activities should be doneweekend or at night with HVAC off.

The decision to relocate occupantsneeds to involve the building owner.Try to maintain buffer zone betweenconstruction and occupied spaces.Consider relocating workers whocomplain of effects to more isolatedlocations. Consider temporaryfacilities. Is it the renovation goingon in the building or is it some otherfactor that are causing issues withoccupants.

Equipment cleaning should bespecified in contract. Detailsregarding cleaning of existing HVACsystem or just the newly installedshould be considered. Closing ductsin part of the system will affect otherparts of the system by increasingvelocities. It should be shown in thecontract whether to clean before orafter the completion of the work.

Establishing pressurization is easy tosay difficult to maintain. There aremany factors working against thebest plan. Wind can make it difficultto maintain pressurization. HVACeconomizer operation can posechallenges. Exhaust fans, bathroomkitchen etc… need to be evaluatedwhen establishing a system tocontrol pressure. Challenges existwith taller buildings such as stackeffect and piston effect of elevators.

Chapter 5 covers managing therenovation process. Projectorganization and selecting IAQControls are the focus. Chapter 6looks at pre-renovation buildingevaluation objectives, proceduresand follow up

In chapter 7 containment isreviewed. General considerationsare covered from offices to hospitals.Guidelines from ASHRAE, CDC,hygienists are included in thischapter. Basic and intermediatecontainment used in schools oroffices are detailed. Advancedcontainment covering applicationssuch as health care are also covered.

In chapter 8 moisture and moldcontrol are covered. Generalcharacteristics of mold are that waterand dirt are required. Beware ofmold resistant materials, they needto be cleaned. Moisture problemsassociated with construction – wetconcrete and open buildings arebiggest water concerns.

Chapter 9 sets guidelines for qualitycontrol standards. These standardsare ultimately set by occupants.Surveillance criteria are eyes andnose. Re-occupancy criteria need tobe outlined. Project documentation– make sure that the IAQmanagement plan establishesaccountability

Chapter 10 and 11 coverscommunication with the occupantsand troubleshooting respectively.Occupant education should be in thecontext of what, when and who.There is some legal liability toaddress complaints. Typicalcomplaint scenarios are covered.Timing, location and reason ofcomplaint are importantconsiderations. What werepressurization differentials at thetime of complaint? What activitieswere taking place on the constructionsite at time of complaint? Whatsolutions and adjustments arepossible to address complaint?

Chapter 12 covers examples ofvarious construction scenarios.These examples walk through all thematerial covered in chapters 1-11.

Questions from audience regardinggood and bad mold. There is badmold but not really any good mold.Mold should be removed regardlessof what type it is. Some molds aremuch more harmful than others.When mold is discovered an expertshould be brought in to investigate.

Question from the audienceregarding the types of air purificationproducts covered in the standard.This is not covered in the SMACNAstandard. Another audience membermentioned that there is a brief oncertain products that clean up airborn contaminants by the ASHRAEenvironment health committee. Thisbrief covers pros, cons andunknowns of various products.

Questions regarding when atemporary HVAC system should beconsidered during design. This issomething that should be discussedwith the owner during the earlydesign phase. Considerationsshould be given to impact onpermanent based equipment vs costof temporary equipment.

TOPIC: Canadian Refrigeration Safety Code Seminar

PRESENTER: Greg Scrivener, President Cold DynamicsASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer

Greg Scrivener started in the refrigeration industry as an apprentice refrigeration mechanic in 1997 and completedhis journeyperson certification in 2003 with an award for ‘Most outstanding new Journeyperson”. Continuing towork in the refrigeration industry, Greg completed a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with distinction from theUniversity of Saskatchewan in 2011.

Having worked in roles from all the way from mechanic to design engineer, Greg can offers a comprehensive viewpoint on refrigeration related construction and design. In 2014, he founded Cold Dynamics and is now involvedwith refrigeration consulting work including design, inspections, commissioning, advanced troubleshooting, energyauditing, control sequence optimizations, and training. Coupled with a passion for energy efficiency and theenvironment, Greg’s unique experience leads to an in-depth understanding of the parameters affecting efficientrefrigeration system operation

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

This presentation is specific to the regulatory requirements of the CSA B52 code in Canada. The presentation willreview the code requirements that apply to the location and installation of refrigerant piping in both industrial andcommercial applications. Because of the regulatory environment in Canada there are large sections of CSA B52that do not have significant enforcement, possibly leaving design engineers responsible for compliance. We willreview the installation of chiller plants, split systems and VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) piping as well ascalculations of occupancy based refrigerant concentration limits. Changes have been made to the refrigerationcode in the USA that will eventually make their way into Canadian code, will also be reviewed.

TOPIC: VRF Technology in our Canadian Climate

PRESENTER: Jean-Samuel (JS) Rancourt, Principal, DXS Engineering

Jean-Samuel (JS) Rancourt is a founding partner of DXS, a subsidiary of HTSfocusing exclusively on VRF technology. JS entered the HTS family of companies via the co-operative internshipprogram. JS is a graduate from the University of Waterloo, graduating Valedictorian from his MechanicalEngineering class.

JS used the co-operative program to spend some time in the HVAC industry in the HTS-Ottawa office and in theHTS-San Antonio, Texas office in 2008 and 2009. After spending some time within the contracting and projectmanagement team of HTS at the Toronto headquarters, JS launched DXS in Ontario in June of 2012. Since then,JS has designed and managed the largest high-rise condo, school, hotel, and school residence project with VRVtechnology in Canada, including the largest VRV project in North America. JS now leads the engineering andowner/developer sales of DXS, and is in charge of business development.

OVERVIEW:

Variable Refrigerant Flow [VRF] technology has swept away the rest of the world over the past three decades. VRFis now becoming a mainstream HVAC option in Canada, with multiple 100+ ton projects underway across thecountry, and as the fastest growing segment of the North American HVAC industry.

VRF has unique advantages, mainly due to buildings no longer needing any water components for HVAC when air-source VRF is used. VRF is a space efficient alternative to central plants, removing the need for chillers, coolingtowers, heat exchangers, pumps etc. Using small and flexible refrigerant pipes to distribute heating and coolingaround buildings instead of water, VRF is ideal for retrofit applications, or for new-builds with footprint or floorheight constraints.

This seminar will introduce VRF technology, discuss its benefits and challenges in our Canadian climate and withour construction standards, and provide insights on designing intelligent VRF systems.

2016 Versions of ASHRAERefrigerant Standards Published

ATLANTA – The 2016 editions ofASHRAE’s major refrigerants-relatedstandards have been published as apackage with 30 new refrigerantsand refrigerant blends added.

ANSI/ASHRAE 15, Safety Standardfor Refrigeration Systems, and itssister standard, ANSI/ASHRAE 34,Designation and Safety Classificationof Refrigerants, constitute a completeset of requirements for the safedesign, construction and applicationof refrigeration systems used in awide variety of residential,commercial and industrialapplications.

For both of the standards, theupdates come from a continuingstream of changes made based onnew science and research,experience, and proposals fromdesigners, manufacturers and users.The 2016 edition of Standard 15incorporates addenda a, b, c, e andg to Standard 15-2013, whichcomprise the following changes:

Incorporated changes to ensure•improvement in the safe design,construction, installation andoperation of refrigeration systems

Updated requirements for safety•relief systems, including revisions torelief vent pipe discharge locationsand design provisions for headeredrelief vent systems

Updated design pressure•requirements applicable to systemsusing carbon dioxide

User’s Manual for 2016 IAQStandard Published by ASHRAE

ATLANTA – A manual to help usersnavigate the changes in ASHRAE’s2016 ventilation standard is now

available.

The User’s Manual for ANSI/ASHRAEStandard 62.1-2016, Ventilationfor Acceptable Indoor Air Quality,provides information on therequirements of the standard andincludes tables, illustrations andexamples to aid users in designing,installing and operating systems forventilation in buildings.

“The manual elaborates on therequirements in the standardpublished earlier this year,” HoyBohanon, chair of the Standard 62.1committee, said. “The standardcontained changes that impact highrise residential spaces, the indoor airquality procedure, laboratoryexhaust and demand controlventilation. The manual providesguidance on how to incorporatethose changes and others.”

ASHRAE Seeks Practitioners andDesigners for 2017 BuildingPerformance ConferenceActivities

ATLANTA – ASHRAE is seekingpresenters for its new BuildingPerformance Analysis Conference as

well as teams for its annual LowDownShowdown modeling competition.

The ASHRAE BuildingPerformance AnalysisConference takes place Sept. 27-29, 2017, in Atlanta, Ga. Themodeling competition is part of thatevent.

“This conference engages the designaspect of modeling and simulation,”Dennis Knight, conference chair,said. “Our goal is to servepractitioners with the most up-to-date best practices, work flows andprocesses required to plan, design,construct and operate highperforming, low energy consuming,environmentally responsive andresponsible, safe, secure and healthybuildings for human occupancy.”

A call for presenters is now open forpresentations that address topics ofinterest to practitioners, modelersand designers.

Also, the ASHRAE LowDownShowdown modeling competitionreturns for its third year. Participantswill model an existing building thatincludes both office space andclimate controlled archivalwarehouse space.

ASHRAE Research plays a huge rolein all aspects of our builtenvironment. Our homes, offices,schools, hospitals, retail spaces andeven the food we eat are all affectedand hopefully protected by theirHVAC&R system, or lack thereof.Although Abbey and her committeehave left me big shoes to fill, I ampleased to be part of such animportant part of society in servingas the Research Promotion Chair forour Ottawa Valley Chapter.

Our objective for the 2016-2017 RPCampaign is $29,000. Although thisseems like a lot, our chapter history,in particular last year’s stellarfundraising efforts have shown usthis objective is attainable. Nodonation is too small, and all moneyraised goes to ASHRAE ResearchCanada.

Georges Maamari, AbbeySauders, Michael Swayne, RobertLefebvre, and Frank Bann have allagreed to help support this cause asa part of the ASHRAE RP Committee.Please contact any of us with your RPquestions. We have started ourannual calling campaign so expect tohear from one of us shortly if youhave not yet.

The raffle draws for event tickets will

continue at each program meeting insupport of our 2016-2017 RPCampaign. The January 24th, Sens v.Capitals tickets graciously donatedby JCI Ottawa raised a total of$710! I have been surveying mechanical/electrical systems for twenty years now, and I seem to havespent much of that time on top of a ladder with my head stuck between a 24x48" opening. Thishas afforded me a vast amount of somewhat useless information that I will attempt to put intowords here. Following is the Rodders CAS Top Ten Surveying Equipment List:

1. The first thing on the list is a high-quality clipboard. I use one made of aluminum that was purchased for mefrom Lee Valley Tools, and besides the fact that it looks sexy, it also has a handy integrated storage box that canstore many of the things listed below. It should be light, make excessive noise when dropped, and not be tooexpensive.

2. An absolute must is letter size photocopies or mini-plots of the survey area, typically an office or Labspace. These should be plotted at 1:50 - surveys are virtually useless at 1:100 unless you don't care aboutaccuracy. Plot out as many as will be required (including spares) between coffee breaks and store them in thehandy storage box - refer to item 1.

3. Our goal in this life is to make one self look as much like a geek as possible. Therefore I make use of a"headlight" flashlight which generally straps around my enormous head and likens me to a coal-miner. It isabsolutely paramount that this flashlight is of high quality with an adjustable beam. This apparatus of coursekeeps my hands free to hold item 1. Always have replacement bulbs handy.

4. Item 3 leads me to state the importance of a large supply of freshly charged batteries. Flashlights drinkbattery power like they are manufactured by the battery companies. Wait a minute - my headlight says Rayovacon it!

5. You simply must have a high quality tape measure on your person. Don't even think about those flimsy 1/2"wide jobbies - they are rubbish. It should be at least 25' in length and 1" wide. And don't believe it when themanufacturer states 20' stand-out - that's rubbish too. When you have your tape, purchase a Magneto belt clip.One minute the tape is on your belt, the next it is in your hand, no messing. Your head is above a ceiling tile, you are holding item 1, your world is bright due to item 3. You don't want to fumble with item 5.

6. Surveying with pens is for perfect people. I am not perfect (not yet anyway). Surveying with 0.7 and 0.5projecting pencils is the way to go. Keep plenty of spare leads in item 1. You will drop the pencils. PurchaseStaedtler Mars Plastic erasers; carry two, both in item 1. These erasers are typically left above ceilings.

7. You will need a straight edge for making neat survey sketches on those letter size photocopies. This straightedge should preferably be a clear plastic ruler with both imperial and metric graduations. Clear plastic because youcan see the lines you have already drawn through the ruler. Store the ruler in item 1.

8. A digital camera is a must. When you walk into an office or Lab space with a digital camera you can create allkinds of interest from those flighty ladies messing with test tubes. Keep the camera in a belt-pouch with a zip top.This adds to your general geeky appearance. The odd grenade and a web-belt will also increase the effect. Seeitem 4.

9. Carry a ladder. Preferably one that will get you above a standard 9 foot ceiling. If you are lucky, the nice on-site guys will let you borrow one. In which case a standard 4 foot step-ladder is always handy - the top makes asuperb tabletop for item 1 when you are in a steamy boiler room with no clean surfaces.

10. Maintain a healthy Mojo. That is, be confident at all times in your ability, and proceed with purpose. Enterrooms to be surveyed with a respectful look on your face, and state clearly what your intentions are. I like the oldstand-by "Hi there, I am here to check your pipes". That always gets them. Another thing people love is when yousimply stand in the middle of the room and gaze up at the ceiling as if there is something important happening upthere (when there isn't).
