BackgroundConclusionsPurposeDisclosures To assess the impact pharmacy students have on Ecuador communities while participating in medical service brigades.

Populations in both regions served in Ecuador had the same commonly prescribed medications, while the top diagnoses differed between sites. The referral rate in Santo Domingo was much higher than that in Chontapunta. May be attributed to a higher percentage of patients with chronic conditions, access to larger hospitals, and lack of dental services on the Santo Domingo brigade. Given the results obtained from two different medical service brigades, it is apparent that pharmacy students from DYC School of Pharmacy have a large impact on the communities that are served by TGH. International brigades allow students to participate in an interprofessional healthcare team to foster a passion for global health and further their professional development.

Results Data on the number of patients treated per day, referrals, prescriptionsdispensed, and the types of disease states treated was collected using theelectronic medical record (EMR) Timmy Care developed by TGH. Because TGH works to integrate into the communities by visiting these sitesevery two to three months, an EMR is key to providing continuous care. If patients require more complex care based on the judgment of the brigadeprovider, they are referred to area hospitals for further testing and treatment.

Of the total patients seen: 48 patients (8% of clinic population) were referred to area hospitals for more advanced care. 62% of patients were previously seen at other TGH brigades.

As part of their experience, the students rotated through various stations including triage, lab, provider care, pharmacy, fluoride and dentistry (on the Chontapunta brigade). Pharmacy students participating in brigades receiveacademic credit as part of the experiential educationdepartment approved pharmacy practical experiences (IPPE/APPE). Analyzing the influence these students have on the communities in Ecuador was crucial to determine if these brigades are worthwhile practical experiences.

Examining the patient population, major medical chiefcomplaints, and prescribing patterns were other goals of this project.

I like mentioning Dental, but Im not sure if it totally follows the purpose we set out in the beginning part. We could tweak the purpose, or possibly alter our focus in the Results for Chonta. Also, Im not sure if theres a way to further substantiate the results in our conclusions... Im terrible at statistics myself personally, but we might have more power behind what were saying if we have something more to say other than its apparent based on the numbers we have. Otherwise, everything else looks awesome!

Bullets (Not so many paragraphs) Purpose, methods, conclusions
