Suggested Route: From Thruway exit 19 in Kingston, go west on State Route 28 to Hurley. Turn left onto Basin Road and then right onto Dike Road. At the intersection with SR28A, turn right. Take SR28A to Reservoir Road and cross the reservoir. Turn left on SR28 towards Boiceville. Turn right on SR212 towards Woodstock, and continue to the Thruway (Interstate 87) in Saugerties. Length: 43.3 miles (not including I-87) Scenic Vistas: Catskill Interpretive Center—The mist-shrouded mountains beckon your inner Rip Van Winkle to explore them. Dike Road—Look west across the Ashokan for inspiring views. Fire Towers—Magnificent 360° views await from these lofty sentinels’ observation cabins. From Old SR28 in Phoenicia, hike to the summit of Mount Tremper (6-mile round-trip). From Woodstock, head north on Meads Mountain Road to Overlook Mountain for a gradual climb to historic ruins (4.8-mile round-trip). Reservoir Crossing and Hike—Crossing the Ashokan on Reservoir Road, the Catskills’ high peaks dominate to the west. From SR28A, drive to the “frying pan” access on the south shore. Hike the paved walkway, enjoying spectacular vistas.
