Slide 2 ASHLEY BOYD Slide 3 What was it? The Articles of Confederation was the first form of government established for the nation. The federal government under the articles was very weak because much of the power was given to the states. Although the states had much more independence, problems arose. Slide 4 I.Maintaining national security II.Creating a stable economic system III. Paying war debts IV.Collecting revenue V. Regulating trade VI. Correcting flaws in the central government. Slide 5 Slide 6 Each state only had one vote in Congress, regardless of their size. Congress did not have the power to tax. Congress did not have the power to regulate foreign and interstate trade. There was no executive branch to enforce any acts passed by Congress. There was no national court system. Amendments to the Articles of Confederation required a unanimous vote. Laws required a 9/13 majority to pass in Congress. Due to all of the problems occurring with the Articles of Confederation, the idea of the Constitution came about. Slide 7 Slide 8 Slide 9 Slide 10 Antifederalists vs. Federalists Federalists were those that supported the ratification of the constitution. They wrote the famous Federalist Papers Among the Federalists was John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison. The Antifederalists were those that opposed the ratification of the Constitution Antifederalists also penned their own papers known as the Anti-Federalist Papers Among the Antifederalists were James Winthrop, Patrick Henry, and George Mason. Slide 11 There were many issues to debate during the writing and ratification process of the Constitution. Some of these issues were: Powers of the central government vs. the states. Representation of the states vs. the people. The extent of democratic participation. The continued institution of slavery. Slide 12 The ultimate purpose of the Constitution was to replace the Articles of Confederation and to make a stronger central government that could prove to be successful for the nation.
