It is my privilege to present the annual report of the Asheboro Police Department for the year 2012. This report is designed to

highlight our many activities and accomplishments while providing our council with information concerning the Police Department during

this past year.

The department continues to address the challenges our city faces by expanding our crime prevention, education, and outreach

efforts which assist in reducing crime and improving the quality of life for all our citizens and those that visit our area. The Community

Watch program in Asheboro is gaining awareness and new communities were added to the program this year. This program is a very viable

tool in keeping our communities safe. We continue to place emphasis on major priorities that include traffic safety, safe environments

within our city schools, aggressive investigation and enforcement efforts focused on the use, sale and distribution of illegal drugs, ABC Law

and other duties such as inspections and underage possession. .

Our department’s promise to you the citizens of Asheboro is that we will continue to provide the best in law enforcement services;

and that we will impact crime through education, prevention and by solving those crimes that are committed. With all of us working

together as a team we can be effective in fulfilling our mission.

The Traffic Enforcement Division investigates traffic crashes and all traffic fatalities, conducts speed enforcement,

accident reconstruction, installs or checks for proper installation of car seats and handles traffic for special events.

The traffic division also works with the Governor's Highway Safety Program in an effort to reduce Driving While

Impaired violations.

DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION D.A.R.E.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) was created in 1983 in Los Angeles, California and remains a successful and immensely popular program. The 10-week program has been taught in the Asheboro City Schools since 1987. The Asheboro Police Department and Asheboro City Schools sponsor D.A.R.E.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012 Officer Matthew Vann taught over 400 5th grade students during the fall of 2012.

Students learned skills to help them cope with conflict, communication, peer pressure, bullying,

reporting crime and drug resistance.

Students learned the health risks associated with drug, tobacco and alcohol usage.

Every student that completed the 10-week program received a certificate and a t-shirt.

Each school that participated had a graduation ceremony and awards were presented.

2012 CID ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In 2012 the Criminal Investigation Division strived to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidence. We can openly generalize that times in Asheboro are changing along with the types of crimes that are being committed. With this in mind the CID had to “think outside the box” or reinvent itself in order to solve complex crimes such as computer frauds and identity thief’s. CID Detectives were called out in excess of 100 occasions to assist with murders, rapes, arsons, assaults and search warrant executions. Over $300,000.00 dollars of stolen property which included pirated automobile mechanic software was seized by the CID Team. Breaking and entering cases were solved which included a large number in the “Greystone” area of the City. Detectivse were able to receive more precise training such as a session attended on “Forensic Interviewing of Children” at the National Children’s Advocacy Center. Several members of the CID team voluntarily chose to participate in the Asheboro Police Departments Explorers program as mentors.

The Criminal Investigations Division conducts in-depth investigations of major crimes including homicide, robbery, burglary, sexual assault, financial crimes, and crimes involving juveniles. Detectives receive numerous hours of specialized training and utilize modern investigative techniques to resolve crimes. Teamwork is an essential part of solving crime and detectives work cooperatively with Forensic Services, department members and citizens to identify and apprehend offenders.

During the year of 2012 the Explorer program grew and at one point the Post

was full with a total of 15 Explorers. The Post lost 3 members, but had 11 members who

remained active the whole year. They included Austin Stanley, Bridgett Swaney, Kyle

Williamson, Shea Williamson, Rebecca Hussey, Taylor Crawford, Gabriela Perez, Gerardo

Sandoval, Eduardo Sandoval, Monica Serfin and Jose Cruz.

Officer from the department have volunteered to serve as advisors for the Explorers. The program consists of a Committee and a Post

Advisor. The Advisors work closely with the Explorers on different programs and projects. During the year of 2012 the Explorers had

training in the following areas.

Roberts Rules of Order ( how to conduct a proper meeting)

Narcotics

Basic First Aid and CPR

Crime Scene Investigation

Crowd control

Marching and Flag Presentations

Building Searches

Traffic Stops

In August the Explorers took part in the National Night Out. They were stationed with Advisors to answer questions about the police

equipment that was on display. One of the Explorers presented the flag for the kick off of the event.

The Asheboro Police Explorers helped the police department with crowd control at the Asheboro Fall Festival Parade and the

Christmas Parade. Explorers were stationed along the parade route with an Advisor to assist with keeping the crowds back from the

roadway. The Explorers also manned a booth at the Asheboro Fall Festival and provided information to the public about crime

prevention and Community Watch. The Explorers also presented the flag at Boy Scouts Roundtable Meeting in December 2012.
