FLO-2D Software, Inc. Jimmy S. O'Brien, President P.O. Box 66 Nutrioso, AZ 85932 [email protected] www.flo-2d.com FLO-2D Software, Inc. provides a suite of flood hydrology and hydraulics software used worldwide for delineating flood hazards. FLO-2D is a two-dimensional flood routing model that can simulate floodwave attenuation with fully integrated channel and floodplain flow exchange. The model predicts river flooding, unconfined alluvial fan flows, dam break flooding, mud/debris flows, urban flooding and overland ocean storm surges/tsunamis. Flooding details can be added including buildings, streets, rainfall, infiltration, groundwater integration and levees. Channel flow is simulated with cross sections and channel/floodplain discharge exchange is computed. FLO-2D is a FEMA approved hydraulic model. Other software in the FLO-2D package include a 2-D river model, a bay/estuary model, a pollutant tracking model, and a flood/rainfall frequency program. RiverFLO-2D is a finite element companion model to FLO-2D that predicts 2-D in-channel hydrodynamics. It simulates river overbank flooding and mobile bed sediment transport. RiverFLO-2D has complete wet-dry bed functionality. The FLO-2D suite of programs are compatible with GIS applications. Technical support is and project oversight consulting are provided. The FloodBreak system is a highly engineered, structural buoyant panel that uses that poser of the flood waters to raise and rotate the gate upwards. It is permanently placed in the vulnerable openings of a building that would normally use sandbags, panels, swing gates, or other active measures. The main features are that the gate is totally passive and nearly invisible, giving building owners a much improved operating gate that does not infringe on the architectural appearance. The National Academies Anne Linn, Study Director Tonya Fong Yee, Senior Program Officer 500 5th Street, NW Washington, DC 20001 (202) 344-2744 www.nationalacademies.org Accurate flood maps are essential for setting appropriate flood insurance rates, regulating development in floodprone areas, and preparing for flooding. “Mapping the Zone” examines the factors that affect FEMA flood map accuracy, assesses the benefits and costs of more accurate flood maps, and recommends ways to improve flood mapping, communication, and management of flood-related data. The report finds that topographic data are the most important factor in determining water surface elevations, base flood elevation, and the extent of flooding, and thus the accuracy of flood maps in riverine areas. Moreover, the benefits of improving flood map accuracy outweigh the costs, even when the most expensive element of mapping -- collecting high-resolution topographic data such as lidar -- is taken into account. US Army Corps of Engineers - National Flood Risk Management Program (cont’d) With environmental sustainability as a guiding principle, our disciplined Corps team is working diligently to strengthen our Nation's security by building and maintaining America's infrastructure and providing military facilities where our servicemembers train, work and live. We are also researching and developing technology for our war fighters while protecting America's interests abroad by using our engineering expertise to promote stability and improve quality of life. We are energizing the economy by dredging America's waterways to support the movement of critical commodities and providing recreation opportunities at our campgrounds, lakes and marinas. And by devising hurricane and storm damage reduction infrastructure, we are reducing risks from disasters. Our men and women are protecting and restoring the Nation's environment including critical efforts in the Everglades, the Louisiana coast, and along many of our Nation's major waterways. The Corps is also cleaning sites contaminated with hazardous, toxic or radioactive waste and material in an effort to sustain the environment. Through deeds, not words, we are...BUILDING STRONG! Exhibit Booth 1 US Army Corps of Engineers - National Nonstructural Flood Proofing Committee Ken Zwickl, Headquarters Joe Remondini Chairman, Tulsa District Randy Behm, Executive Secretary, Omaha District Larry Buss , Omaha District Clark Frentzen, South Pacific Division Gene Barr, Huntington District Stuart Davis, IWR Kevin Lovetro, New Orleans District www.nwo.usace.army.mil/nfpc The Corps of Engineers National Nonstructural Flood Proofing Committee (NFPC) is a select standing group of COE employees working within the Flood Plain Management Services and Non Structural Flood Risk Reduction Programs. These employees are located in various Corps offices nation wide. The committee purpose is to promote the development and use of proper flood proofing techniques. It also provides educational workshops to train in flood proofing measures. The NFPC promotes and provides technical guidance on Non Structural flood reduction measures throughout the United States to reduce property damages and loss of life from floods and hurricanes. The Committee has three main objectives:

Promote the development and use of proper flood proofing and non structural flood risk reduction techniques. Provide training and technical expertise on flood proofing and non structural flood reduction measures. Disseminate flood proofing information to State, Tribal, and Local Officials and general public.

Flood proofing is a more green alternative to reduce flood damages to buildings and their contents and can save lives! Historically the Corps began its Water Resources Program in 1824 and today is the Nations oldest and largest water resources development agency. Today the Corps manages nearly 2,000 water resources projects. Structures located in flood prone areas can be severely damaged by flood waters. The Corps’ Flood Plain Models on display are used to demonstrate several ways to protect structures from flood waters and hurricanes. The NFPC assists local and regional Corps offices to develop non structural flood risk reduction measures for riverine and coastal areas. The committee provides training on non structural methodologies to new Corps Planners through the Planning Associates Program. Exhibit Booths 3, 4
