Sexual vs. AsexualSexual vs. Asexual

There are 2 types of reproduction:◦Sexual reproduction

Two parents contribute genetic information (DNA) to produce a zygote.

◦Asexual reproduction Involves only one parent.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

There are many different kinds of asexual reproduction for many different kinds of organisms.

Offspring from asexual reproduction are clones.◦Clones contain DNA that is identical to the DNA of the parent, so they are genetically identical.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Binary Fission◦The parent undergoes cell division to produce 2

genetically identical daughter cells or offspring.

◦Only single-celled organisms like bacteria use binary fission.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Binary Fission◦Populations can grow

rapidly! Some bacteria can

double every 20 minutes!

If they are disease causing, this is how they cause an infection.

If some protists do this is in the ocean, we get red tide.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Budding◦In budding, the offspring begin as a bud (a

small growth on the parent).

◦The bud grows, then breaks off the parent.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Budding◦Budding happens in some single-celled and

some multicellular organisms.

◦These offspring are genetically identical to the parent.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Vegetative Reproduction◦This is how plants can reproduce asexually.◦All kinds of vegetative reproduction produce

clones.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Vegetative Reproduction◦Some plants send out runners.

These are special stems that grow horizontally and can grow roots to become an independent plant.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Vegetative Reproduction◦Some plants send out

shoots from the base of the trunk or underground stems which grow into new plants.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Vegetative Reproduction◦Cuttings from some plants can grow roots.◦There are also bulbs and tubers.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Fragmentation◦A small part of the

animal breaks off then grows into a new animal.

◦Regeneration is necessary, it is when new parts grow back on the fragment.

Types of asexual reproductionTypes of asexual reproduction

Spore Formation◦Spores are cells with thick walls, almost like

seeds.◦They are produced by cell division.◦Offspring produced by spores are genetically

identical to parents.

Important notes Important notes

Only 1 parent is needed for asexual reproduction.

All the offspring are genetically identical to the parent.

A single organism can produce large numbers of offspring.
