A new technology detects structural defects in the steel of ships. An investigator is inspired to apply this technology to evaluate the heart. Innovators further refine it for clinical use. Pioneering clinicians begin to incorporate it in everyday care. New insights are discovered, and a new discipline emerges. The process repeats…

In June 2017 we will convene the 28th Annual American Society of Echocardiography Scientific Sessions in Baltimore, Maryland to once again recognize and celebrate this cycle of Investigation-Innovation-Incorporation. From the basics of clinical imaging to the most sophisticated advances in microbubble gene delivery to the determination of its best use in value-driven healthcare, we aim to present how echocardiography is best utilized today, and what’s in store for tomorrow.

On behalf of this year’s Program Committee, we would like to highlight several features of this year’s upcoming sessions:

We will offer a hands-on session teaching point of care use of ultrasound (POCUS) in the critical care setting. We will ‘flip the classroom’ by having critical care faculty who are POCUS experts instruct sonographers and echocardiographers on this extended clinical use of echo.

Taking advantage of our meeting location in Baltimore, headquarters of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), we will offer an Accreditation Boot Camp. The IAC staff will be on-site, in full force, on Friday, June 2nd to educate and assist you in completing your accreditation applications.

Our individual educational sessions are each organized to provide background, current use, and a glimpse of the future state of echo in patient care. As such, we have Embedded Abstracts within the framework of many individual educational sessions, bringing forward the best of the latest science.

Structural Heart Disease and Cardio-Oncology, two rapidly emerging disciplines, will be emphasized with designed ‘mini-courses’ within the general sessions.

Given the unprecedented changes ongoing in U.S. healthcare, we will further capitalize on our proximity to the D.C. area by holding a Value Summit on Monday, June 5th. In addition to educating our membership, this 3-hour session will be targeted (and offered free of charge) to your hospital administrators and service line leaders.

On Tuesday, June 6th, ASE will also be sponsoring a Hill Day to bring our legislative needs to the government. See page 11 for more information.

There’s so much more. Chalk Talks, Science & Technology Theaters, and the 2nd Echovation Challenge will highlight echocardiography from its most foundational concepts to its most cutting-edge applications and leading-edge technologies. The ASE Foundation’s 8th Annual Research Awards Gala on Saturday evening June 3rd will celebrate individual and ASE achievements.

Please join us at ASE 2017 at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in June! Plan to bring your family to enjoy the National Aquarium and the array of offerings of this vibrant area. Be with your colleagues and peers as we educate, demonstrate, and celebrate all that echocardiography has to offer in the care we provide to our patients every day.

the mitral valve and the pulmonary veins are baffled to the tricuspidvalve, was the first operative procedure for TGA that resulted inacceptable operative and midterm survival.11-13 Although the AtrSOachieved widespread success from the mid-1960’s through the early-1980’s, the search continued for a more ‘‘physiologic’’ procedurebecause of the known long-term complications such as right ventricular(RV) dysfunction and significant tricuspid regurgitation (in a ventriclepotentially unsuited for a lifetime as the systemic pumping chamber), ar-rhythmias, and a small but important prevalence of obstruction of thesystemic and/or pulmonary venous pathways.14-17

In 1975, Jatene et al.18 performed the first successful ASO.Although not a true anatomical ‘‘correction,’’ this landmark operationeffectively achieved circulation in series with the morphologic leftventricle acting as the systemic pumping chamber. During the ASO,the great arteries are transected and ‘‘switched’’ to the other semilunarvalve, and the CAs are translocated to the ‘‘neoaorta’’ (Video 2; avail-able at www.onlinejase.com). The LeCompte maneuver19 is also per-formed during the operation to avoid distortion of the branchpulmonary arteries in the process of switching the great vessels. TheLeCompte maneuver relocates the aorta posterior to the pulmonaryartery such that both branch pulmonary arteries drape anteriorly tothe aorta (Figure 2, Video 2; available at www.onlinejase.com).Although the ASO is a more ‘‘physiologic’’ procedure compared to

the AtrSO, it is by no means a ‘‘corrective repair,’’ as it requires mul-tiple suture lines as well as mobilization and reimplantation of theCAs.

In the setting of posterior malalignment VSD and left ventricular(LV) (subpulmonary) outflow tract obstruction alternative surgicalstrategies are required for repair because a successful ASO requiresa relatively normal pulmonary valve. Most patients with posterior

CASE-BASED LEARNING CL

During these sessions, the practice of clinical echocardiography and its relationship to patient management will be highlighted and stressed by experts. Special attention is paid to valvular disease during dedicated sessions. In addition, diastolic function, contrast, the right ventricle, and myriad other topics are covered in these sessions. There is a dedicated track devoted to cases each morning from 7:00 – 7:50 AM.

IMAGING ESSENTIALS E

This track will instruct practitioners on techniques of assessment and quantitation. There are disease-based sessions that will help you improve your skills in chamber quantification and imaging a variety of disease states. In addition, there are practical sessions on lab management, diastology, and pericardial disease that you can incorporate into your lab when you return home. There is a special session on Friday, June 2nd addressing scanning and ergonomics.

PEDIATRIC/CONGENITAL PC

The ASE Council on Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease has put together a program packed with cutting-edge science from fetus to adult, whether you are a pediatric echocardiographer or just want to learn more about the care of patients living with congenital heart diseases. The popular staples of the track return: Pediatric Echo Jeopardy, Fireside Chat, case presentations, oral abstract sessions, and the always entertaining controversy debates. We will unveil the mysteries of some of the newer echo technologies, such as 3D printing, and see how expert care centers apply them in clinical practice.

PERIOPERATIVE P

This track has been designed by the ASE Council on Perioperative Echocardiography to bring surgeons, anesthesiologists, echocardiographers, and sonographers together. These sessions will explore incorporating 3D echo into your practice for cases including mitral valve disease, aortic stenosis, and the dilated aortic root.

POINT OF CARE POC

New in 2017 the Point of Care track has been added because this highly valuable modality is of critical importance as healthcare practitioners become skilled in the use of point of care ultrasound. A special session on Friday afternoon on POCUS Basics: Ultrasound for the Critically Ill Patient is a great introductory session to this innovative use of cardiovascular ultrasound. There are also sessions on understanding ultrasound outside the echo lab and evaluating the hypertensive patient in the ICU and emergency department.

SYMPOSIA S

The 2017 Program Committee has designed the Symposia Track to move from more basic lectures on Saturday to an increasing focus on new technology, techniques, and science on the other days. Each symposium discusses a specific topic in detail and instructs you on how to apply state-of-the-art cardiovascular ultrasound techniques in clinical practice.

RESEARCH R

Investigators will present the latest advances in cardiovascular ultrasound throughout the conference. Don’t miss two special competitions designed to acknowledge exceptional research, the Sonographer Investigator’s Award Competition and the prestigious Arthur E. Weyman Young Investigator’s Award Competition, where the four best abstracts submitted compete in front of a panel of luminaries for international recognition. Meet the investigators during dedicated poster viewing times in the Exhibit & Poster Hall.

VASCULAR V

ASE’s Council on Vascular Ultrasound has put together a program that will provide attendees with an excellent overview, as well as advanced topics on vascular ultrasound of interest to the practicing cardiologist/sonographer. Dr. Valentin Fuster, Director of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute, Mount Sinai Heart, is a special faculty guest for the The Coming Storm: Atherosclerosis Imaging session on Saturday, June 3rd. SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE

ASE HILL DAY

Please plan now to join us for ASE Hill Day in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, June 6th. On the last day of the Scientific Sessions the ASE Advocacy team is organizing an opportunity for you to meet with your elected officials to advocate for your patients and to make sure the voice of the cardiovascular ultrasound community is heard. This is important to ensure that you can continue to provide quality care in this ever-changing healthcare environment. Whether you have participated in previous Capitol Hill visits or you are a first time participant, ASE’s advocacy team will make sure you are fully prepared and schedule exclusive meetings with congressional representatives. You can register for this event at the same time you complete your Scientific Sessions registration. This event is limited to 15 people, so if you are interested, please register early.

EXHIBIT & POSTER HALL

The exchange of information and access to new concepts, technology, devices, and research is a vital component of professional development. Get face-to-face with the industry’s leading developers and executives who can help you discover what’s new, assist you in making the right choices for your institution, and show you ways to reduce costs and improve productivity. The Exhibit & Poster Hall will open with the President’s Reception on Saturday afternoon, which is always a highly anticipated event where you can see new products launched. On Sunday and Monday, join luminary faculty during the session breaks on the exhibit floor for intimate Q&A sessions in Chalk Talks.

Research is the heart of every Scientific Sessions. ASE showcases investigators from around the world presenting cutting-edge research on the latest advances in cardiovascular ultrasound on Sunday and Monday in the Exhibit & Poster Hall. Spend time in the poster area and gain firsthand knowledge and insight from scientific investigators.

The Science & Technology Theater will be located in the Exhibit & Poster Hall. These events are packed with interested professionals eager to learn the latest information on advances in technology and practice. Meals are provided by ASE and are included in your registration fee, but space and meals are on a first come, first served basis.

These industry-supported sessions are independently planned and are not a part of the official ASE 28th Annual Scientific Sessions as planned by the Program Committee or in any way directly endorsed or affiliated with ASE. These sessions are not included in the ASE approved CME credit.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

#ASE2017 // 13

ABOUT BALTIMORE, THE “CHARM CITY”

The ASE 2017 Scientific Sessions are taking place in the heart of Baltimore, the Inner Harbor. This area, which was once the second leading port of entry for immigrants to the United States, is full of unique shops, amazing restaurants, and numerous museums. Baltimore, known as the “Charm City,” is home to world renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and University as well as the University of Maryland School of Medicine. History buffs will enjoy exploring Fort McHenry, which during the War of 1812 repelled the British, saved the city, and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the U.S. National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. The fort’s sprawling, waterfront lawns also provide a great way to see the skyline of Baltimore. Baseball fans will be happy to know that the Baltimore Orioles are playing the Boston Red Sox, at Camden Yards, the weekend of the Scientific Sessions. Baltimore is also nationally recognized as a must-visit destination for food lovers. Known for crabs and fresh seafood, the cuisine is now as diverse as ever. Visit Baltimore.org to plan your trip.
