The Nashville Branch has some great events coming up in the next few months. The American Concrete Pipe Association and Metro Stormwater have teamed up to present the 2020 School of Rock . It will be held on March 27, 2020 and everyone that attends will receive six PDHs. All proceeds from the School of Rock go to the Nashville Branch. Engineers' Week is in February and so is your opportunity to volunteer at the Bridge Competition or the Adventure Science Center. You can also make plans to visit a local school. I want to encourage everyone to renew their ASCE membership for 2020. The Nashville Branch of ASCE is an award-winning branch with almost 1,000 members. Our network is strong and wide-reaching. We have members in Dickson, Murfreesboro, Columbia, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Cookeville, and other communities outside of the Metro Nashville area. If you are in one of these outlying areas and cannot regularly attend lunch meetings, I would like to invite to you plan a networking meeting in your city. This meeting can be over breakfast, lunch, or dinner at a local restaurant or your office. The Nashville Branch board can help you locate other members in your area to invite. If you are interested in planning a meeting, please email me and we will get more information to you. Suzanne B. Set your calendars forFriday, March 27 at theAdventure Science Centerto discuss the MetroNashville Stormwater -Revised Pipe Video

Inspection Guidelines.

This special edition of School of Rock will be utilized tosupport Metro Nashville in their goal and expectation ofalways receiving properly installed RCP when located intheir ROW or public utility easements. Long lasting andtrouble-free installations of any pipe requires properstructural design, clear installation details, properinstallation, and good Quality Control and Assurancedelivered through inspection and proper evaluation.School of Rock will cover the responsibilities of theEngineer, Producer, Installer, and Metro with respect tothe aforementioned critical project components of aproper RCP installation.Speakers will include Metro Stormwater, Pipeline videoInspection professionals, and members and staff of theAmerican Concrete Pipe Association.

Scholarship Application

Fall 2020-Spring 2021 Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Committee isanxiously awaiting applicationsfor the 2020 ASCE NashvilleBranch college scholarshipprogram. There are two waysyou can help us continue this 25-year program that has awardedover $150,000 to deserving future civil engineers:

1. If you are a current Civil Engineering student orknow one, we encourage you to on online andcomplete the relatively simple application form. Undergrad and grad students who attendLipscomb University, Tennessee StateUniversity, Tennessee Tech, or VanderbiltUniversity are eligible. The scholarships are opento civil engineering student children of currentASCE Nashville Branch members, regardless ofthe school the student attends. Applicationdeadline is March 16, 2020. 2. Support our scholarship program fundingactivities by participating in the annual golftournament, bowling tournament, cardtournament night, and School of Rock.

Nominations for these awards must be submitted to theBranch Awards Committee by Friday, March 13, 2020.The Branch Awards Committee then works with aselection committee, made up of the Branch Officersand Past Award Winners, to select the proposed awardwinner. Once the selection committee determines eachaward winner, the names will be sent to the NashvilleBranch Board for approval. Awards will be presentedduring the month of April 2020. Nashville Branch Awardwinners will be forwarded to the Tennessee ASCESection that same year for consideration of the SectionAward. 2020 Music City Bridge Competition

We have started planningfor the 2020 Music CityBridge Competition to beheld on February 29, 2020from 9:00 am-noon atVanderbilt's LASIR facility.The competition entailshigh school studentsmaking bridges out of bass wood and bringing them totest at the competition for a chance at prizes and anopportunity to qualify for the national competition. Feelfree to pass along the info to any high school studentsor teachers you know. If you'd like to get involved in thisevent and the planning to facilitate it, please contactJustin Corbitt or Janey Camp.

ACE Mentors - Nashville is Looking forEngineers to get Involved

ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering)Mentors is an afterschool program for high schoolstudents focused on developing skills and introducingstudents to careers in ACE fields through projects. TheNashville Affiliate serves Davidson, Williamson, andRutherford Counties. There are currently approximately130 students registered to participate in the Nashvillearea ACE Mentor program this year. Most studentteams meet once every two weeks to work on a projectthroughout the school year. It can be a rewardingexperience and if you don't have time to commit to theentire academic year, there are opportunities to getinvolved for only a session or a few. Student Chapter Updates

Lipscomb University

The spring semesterbegins as Lipscomb'sASCE chapter getsrolling with things! Our first member meeting of the yearwas on January 15th,2020 and the turnout was great.Barge Design Solutions gave a presentation to futureCivils', leaving them with prominent knowledge of thecompany's work, real life advice, and inspiration.

Furthermore, national competitions have started to rampup. The Steel Bridge team have begun fabrication forthe steel bridge competition: beginning to cut steel,welding, and sanding. This year the steel bridge teamhas a lot of members so they hopeful in an early finishof the steel bridge. The Concrete Canoe team has alsostarted with the concrete canoe competition bybeginning concrete testing, creating a mold, and castingwithin the following weeks. Lipscomb's ASCE chapter isexcited to see national and small competitions get backto work. Lipscomb is also looking forward to hosting the ASCERegional Director Mr. Bob Cagle and the NashvilleYounger Member Group on January 22,2020. They willbe sharing their experiences in ASCE and how studentscan get involved post-graduation.

TSU Student Chapterhas had a great startyear in 2020. Wehave two studentsgoing to theWorkshop for Student Chapter Leadership from January30 through February the 1st. Our first concrete canoe inmany years is well on its path to completion. We arealso excited to be doing many events and activities atthe Southeastern ASCE conference in March. We areexpanding our branch with a wider range of newstudents, and we look forward to a bigger and betteryear here at Tennessee State University.

Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University's AmericanSociety of Engineers (ASCE)chapter has kept busy thiswinter season! Between makingand donating tie blankets forcharity, shucking bamboo tocreate a sustainable bus shelter,pouring molds for concretecanoes for the annualSoutheastern ASCE Conferenceand celebrating the holidays with their peers, thechapter has made sure to make the start of thesemester sustainable, goal-oriented, and fun. Thechapter has also been fortunate enough to hearphenomenal presentations regarding aviation andairport terminal engineering from Atkins and more aboutthe engineering taking place in their own backyard fromthe Executive Director of Mobility for Vanderbilt. Lastly,the group is getting ready to host their annual IndustryNight on February 6th, and has been working onprofessional development through resume and coverletter editing. All excitement on Vanderbilt's end asthese events draw near!
