It was the 5th of the turning point, Asahikawa Design Week 2019 featured new items from exhibitors, as well as

major projects such as open factories, with the theme of "crossover", as well as interior designer Gwenael Nicolas

and Danish textile manufacturer conducted a special installation by Kvadrat.

We held Talk events and party at Asahikawa Design Center to position as a base for gathering more visitors.

In addition, the renovation of the old office building was a topic of many topics, and it was a five-day “place of

living and design”

Kvadrat was established in Denmark in 1968 and has deep roots in Scandinavia’s design tradition. Kvadrat holds the leading position in Europe’s high-quality contemporary textiles market. We supply architects, designers and private consumers across the world with textiles and textile-related products.

ASAHIKAWA DESIGN WEEKADW SPECIAL INSTALLATION

At the venue entrance, visitors were greeted with tunnels of multicolored 750 fabrics hanging from the ceiling. Design is a French designer Gwenael Nicolas who is known worldwide for space design such as fashion brand.With the theme of Nature Palette, we expressed the world view inspired by the nature of Asahikawa with colorful fabrics of Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat.

This ADW which developed the theme of Crossover. At the newly redesigned Asahikawa Design Center, new products and new proposals were announced in collaboration with designers active globally and at home, and a number of products utilizing Hokkaido broadleaf trees were also exhibited.

OPEN FACTORY & ASAHIKAWA FULL COURSE

Open factories are a well-loved part of the event every year. Many companies once again opened up their factories to the public, giving everyone the opportunity to get a taste of on-location furniture production. Each company conducted this event at their own factory warehouse using ideas unique to that particular furniture maker, such as an exhibition of trial products conceptualized during the furniture manufacturing process. Woodworking classes geared toward the local community were held along with a host of other events which continued to welcome many guests straight through the weekend. Asahikawa Full Course was popular and offering cuisine made of local ingredients borrowing the skills of a variety of businesses, including sweets, handmade soba, Jingisukan, raclette, and so on.

This year, the venue was changed to the Asahikawa Design Center.Using local ingredients in collaboration with Kamikawa Food Tourism, we welcomed visitors with various menus. The party had 435 participants and was able to measure intimate communication.

Traveling Kitchen bus that was very popular last time appeared in Asahikawa Design Center again this year. A promotional booth for the Kokonoki no Kagu Hokkaido Project, started in 2014, was also set up in the Design Center. They released various information, including the fact that use of Hokkaido broadleaf tree materials for the first time had increased to 40%. The results were displayed on the panel. They also shared information about the World Skills Competition, a 15 -country competition where young Asahikawa crafts people have been representing Japan. Especially from Shizuoka in 2007 to Kazan in 2019, they have participated in 8 consecutive competitions. We exhibited the works of Gauzy Calm Works Tomohiro Yamaguchi who will enter WorldSkills Kazan.

Seven towns and villages all over the country participate, and this initiative of giving a wooden chair to a born baby is 14th year in this year. The 15th model this spring was born, including “your chair of hope” given to children in the afflicted areas of the Higashi-Nippon Earthquake. The 2019 edition is a Swedish designer, designed by Sture Eng, who is closely related to Asahikawa Furniture, and exhibited three chairs with an explanatory panel. In addition, we exhibited the entire work of “KIMINO ISU PROJECT” at Asahikawa Museum of Art.

100th Anniversary of BAUHAUS ｰOda Collectionｰ

BAUHAUS conducted modern design education in the sence of industrial design. The philosophical and practical inf luence that continues to have on modern society has been great, and has become a model of art universities in the world.At this exhibition, we saw furniture, lighting, glassware by designers and alumni who taught at the school, as well as valuable items from Oda Collection. Knoll, one of the two largest furniture manufacturers in the United States, has its own designer from BAUHAUS, and is a manufacturer that has inherited the school’s lineage of education that pursues modern beauty. “There was a time when I was fascinated and collected” and it is the first exhibition that Noritsugu Oda, who holds most of them, carefully selects and exhibits himself. A very unusual collection has appeared, from the production drawings of the Barcelona chair to the novelties for the important visitors. JAPANESE WOOD FURNITURE SUMMIT

Domestic Wood Furniture Summit where valuable information exchange places where manufacturers working on furniture making using domestic materials actively gather across production areas and regions. Presentation of the latest use cases, this year’s fourth year, guest speaker was Professor Toshiya Yoshida from Hokkaido University. Speaker : Patent Office CDO （Chief Design Officer） Deputy Commissioner Kunihiko Shimano The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Patent Office announced the “Design Management Declaration” on May 23, 2018 and for the first time in the central ministries, a Chief Design Officer （CDO） was established. Designers who work in distant towns in a large area of Hokkaido, "three city design exchange conference (AOH + 1)" gather once a year and stimulate each other with keywords as a design. In Asahikawa, the venue for this year’s event, we held a planning exhibition that gathered various designs related food from Obihiro, Hakodate, and AsahikawaOrganizer ／ Asahikawa Design AssociationPlanning and operation ／ Asahikawa Advertisement Design Council

In 1919, BAUHAUS was founded in Weimer, Germany, as a base for research and education in modern design that pioneered the times.

Half a century later, the Faculty of Arts and Enginnering, Hokkaido Tokai University opened in Asahikawa as a model of the BAUHAUS

and produced a large number of human recources. While looking back on the history of the two universities, we held an exhibition that

explored the ideal form of a university with design faculties, which is currently being prepared for installation in Asahikawa.

The Asahikawa Craft Design Association celebrated their 30th anniversary last year 2018. ACDA symbolizes the thickness and spread of Asahikawa’s manufacturing. Artists such as woodworking, glass, pottery and dyeing meet in one hall and express their individuality in the whole venue. This year, we held the "Kenji Hayami・World of Birds" exhibition as a member special exhibition. Also, as a sub-event, we exhibited and sold works at "Asahikawa Craft Market" by ACDA & Asahikawa Kinomono Association.Organizer ／ Asahikawa Craft Design Association

Every year, the popular woodworking class made high quality furniture materials again this year, making a full-scale stool that does not use nails. The engineer supported the completion for elementary school students from the 4th to 6th grade. The previous day’s Saturday, we also held a workshop for Bamboo dragonfly.

We held a workshop to make a “my own scent” by blending your favorite aroma based on Hokkaido natural aromas such as Red pine,

Todomatsu, lavender, and mint. There was also a sale of the ADW original scent of the installation space on the 1st floor of the venue.

Popular factory tour as a weekend event. They visited two factories and showroom in Asahikawa this year. We guided them by bus to the 43-year-old Sasaki Kogei, representing Asahikawa, and GAUZY CALM WORKS, which has just established a showroom. Asahikawa Crafts Center staff accompanied them.

We held a workshop to make a vegetable-like sushi with local vegetables. The lecturer was a food creator and designer GEN who works in Paris, New York and other countries. On the first day of Forest Tourism in Nakagawa, guide walk guided by a forest professional, a bonfire lunch with local ingredients, and an experience of harvesting conifers. ADW SHUTTLE TAXI & BUS

From this year, the use of shuttle taxis and buses has been changed to ticket purchase. From the conventional route, we operated the bus between “Asahikawa Station to Asahikawa Design Center” not only in the early morning route, but also in the daytime, and also established a jumbo taxi that operates between the manufacturers of Higashikagura and Higashikawa. In addition, we called for topics such as the appearance of bench-type bus stops for customers’ breaks.
