Liaison Officer to Student Organizations

We also created external partnerships with organizations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CRIMEDIM, King’s Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP), National Association of Pharmaceutical Students (NAPS), and Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA). Through my leadership role, I was invited to speak about our EVD campaign at numerous scientific events supported on the virtual platform.

The KickEbolaOut campaign has supported my skill development in intercultural collaborations, teamwork and leadership, which help me to work as a member of the Team of Officials.

External representation is a fascinating task. In the past, I have acted as the commu-nication’s secretary of our University’s student union, and this experience has pro-vided opportunities to advance my communication skills required to collaborate with relevant partners.

I believe that I can strongly add value to next term’s Team of Officials. If I were trust-ed the responsibility of being Liaison Officer to Student Organizations, my main goals would be to increase IFMSA’s external visibility and to have an active participation in external student organization networks.

I intend to evaluate what is best done in other Student Organizations, in order to develop new and improved ideas to implement them in IFMSA throughout its current reform process; explore collaboration with partner organizations to its highest poten-tial; and engage NMOs and empower their activities.

I intend to create and maintain sustainable and meaningful relation with external student organizations, keeping in mind the IFMSA reform process and post-2015 agenda. These organizations include International Pharmaceutical Student Federa-tion (IPSF), International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA), and International Association of Dental Students (IADS).

Finally, I continue to represent my NMO and IFMSA by my future participation as invited keynote speaker at The Network towards Unity For Health (TUFH 2015) in South Africa and member of the IFMSA delegation to attend Global Youth Consulta-tion (GYC), World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), Qatar 2/9/15in Qatar.

Liaison Officer to Student Organizations

Motivation Letter

Dear IFMSA friends,

It is with my deepest pleasure that I hereby present to you my candidature for the posi-tion of Liaison Officer to Student Organizations for the term 2015-2016.

Let me first start by introducing myself. My name is Asad, and I am from Freetown, Si-erra Leone. I love meeting people and making friends. I wish that I could have friends from all over the world. When I am not studying, I enjoy being active by playing tennis, badminton, cricket, and football.

For the past three years, I have been an active IFMSA member of SLeMSA-Sierra Leone. My leadership roles included NORE Assistant (2013) and President (2014). Learning about my NMO and how I could help my fellow IFMSA members and Sierra Leone community members motivated me to continue my leadership activities. I am passionate about health collaborations that directly impact our communities, especially in low-resource settings.

While I was NORE Assistant, I helped create a database of medical students who were interested in doing research. I collaborated with the Medical Research Council, Sierra Leone (MRC-SL) and got funding and support from them to organize the first SLeMSA Research Day in 2013.

While I was President, I started my term with a large challenge: Ebola outbreak. The ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak had started, and our medical school closed. Our citizens were becoming infected with EVD and dying. We were faced with the question of whether to stay indoors and protect ourselves or go out and save others. As a team, we made the brave decision to enter our community and implement the KickEbolaOut campaign.

In the KickEbolaOut global campaign, we collaborated with student organizations and NMOs worldwide to raise funds to fight the EVD outbreak. We successfully conducted a public awareness campaign based on social media and social mobili-zation, developed an EVD orphan support campaign, and launched the KickEbolaOut app.

As the coordinator of the KickEbolaOut campaign, I learned how external collabora-tions can improve our health initiatives. We created multiple diverse internal IFMSA partnerships with NMOs, such as SwiMSA-Switzerland, IFMSA-Quebec, IFMSA-Ja-pan, ANEM-France, IFMSA-Brazil, and Medsin-UK.

The KickEbolaOut campaign has supported my skill development in intercultural col-laborations, teamwork and leadership, which help me to work as a member of the Team of Officials.

External representation is a fascinating task. In the past, I have acted as the communi-cation’s secretary of our University’s student union, and this experience has provided opportunities to advance my communication skills required to collaborate with relevant partners.

If I were trusted the responsibility of being Liaison Officer to Student Organizations, my main goals would be to increase IFMSA’s external visibility and to have an active participation in external student organization networks.

I intend to evaluate what is best done in other Student Organizations, in order to develop new and improved ideas to imple-ment them in IFMSA throughout its current reform process; explore collaboration with partner organizations to its highest poten-tial; and engage NMOs and empower their activities.

I intend to create and maintain sustainable and meaningful relation with external stu-dent organizations, keeping in mind the IFMSA reform process and post-2015 agenda. These organizations include International Pharmaceutical Student Federation (IPSF), International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA), and International Association of Dental Students (IADS).

Finally, I continue to represent my NMO and IFMSA by my future participation as invited keynote speaker at The Network towards Unity For Health (TUFH 2015) in South Af-rica and member of the IFMSA delegation to attend Global Youth Consultation (GYC), World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), Qatar 2/9/15in Qatar.

In conclusion, I am enthusiastic and motivated to assume the responsibility of this IFMSA leadership position, and promise to give my best contribution to IFMSA and all our partners. Thank you for considering my candidature for Liaison Officer to Stu-dent Organizations. If you have any questions or concerns regarding my candidature, please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Liaison Officer to Student Organizations

If elected as Liaison Officer to Student Organizations, I would like to implement the following four points as key priorities throughout the 2015-2016 terms. I aim to adapt this plan of action according to the IFMSA 3-year Strategic Plan and the UN Post-2015 Agenda.

i. Strengthen IFMSA external Visibility ii. Build Sustainable Partnerships iii. Build Capacity in External Representation iv. Collaborate on projects, Fundraising and Advocacy

Please note that this is a preliminary plan of action. Feedback and suggestions for improvement are more than welcome, as I am dedicated to working for a Federation that represents its members’ global interests.

An NMO is the unit of IFMSA, the way a cell is a unit of an organization, and this plan will be centered on actions that will benefit individual NMOs and IFMSA as a whole.

Handover and setting priorities: i. Review all MoUs relevant to the position of LOSO. Identify MoUs that require renewal and verification that they are in line with the new IFMSA strategic plan and post-2015 agenda.ii. Improve communication and meetings with the outgoing LOSO to establish the achievements made during her time, discuss challenges faced, and be introduced to partner organizations. iii. Establish what new partners the outgoing LOSO is following up, what work re-mains to be done, and possible collaborative projects with new student organizations. iv. Understand the work and organizational structure of International Coordination of Youth Organizations (ICMYO), Informal forum for International Student Organiza-tions (IFISO), and World Healthcare Student Alliance (WHSS).

Needs Assessment: i. Complete a survey to better understand the needs of our NMOs and IFMSA as a whole in relation to student organizations. The current NMO reports will also be studied. ii. Develop a study on success stories of how NMOs are making the best out of student organizations partnerships in other countries.iii. Create a new database of local, regional and international student organiza-tions and assess the impact they are making.

Plan of Action

External representation:i. Active participation in meetings such as IFISO and WHSS is important to maintain strong relationship with partners such as International Association of Dental Students (IADS) and International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF). ii. The best way to manage external image is to be externally proactive. IFMSA is one of the most powerful organizations worldwide and in representing IFMSA; it will be ensured we portray our strength and opinion in world health matters. iii. Ensuring that IFMSA delegations are diverse, of high quality. Standard eligibil-ity criteria will be created so that the most proactive students are chosen. iv. A leaflet will be created with IFMSA’s main activities and trainings, which can allow IFMSA to show itself to other organizations.v. A database of SOs will be created. Our level of interaction and collaboration with each SO will be written in detail.

Regional representation:i. Working with Regional Coordinator and LOs of Standing Committees will allow active searching and establishment of new official collaborations in the regions. ii. Making a difference at an NMO level is important and regional work will be prioritized so that IFMSA NMOs can benefit from regional organizations.

Joint Projects, Fundraising and Advocacyi. In order to make a difference, health priority areas will be identified, with the help of our policy statements, to include important advocacy areas such as post-2015 agenda, climate change, human resources for health, infectious diseases to name a few. ii. Partners will be engaged so that they can jointly support us in our advocacy work in order for us to achieve results faster.iii. Getting external funding is easier when a joint application is made. The best partners will be engaged to raise funding for our most important projects and advo-cacy work.

Motivation Letter:

Dear IFMSA friends,

It is with my deepest pleasure that I hereby send you my candidature for the position of Liaison Officer to Student Organizations for the term 2015-2016.

Let me first start by introducing myself. My name is Asad, and I am from Freetown, Sierra Leone. I love meeting people and making friends. I wish that I could have friends from all over the world. When I am not studying, I enjoy being active by play-ing tennis, badminton, cricket, and football.
