Chastang Ford arranged to have Blue Diamond Parts trainer Rick Burleson come to our

meeting and talk about service issues with the Power Stroke diesels. Rick was entertaining and informative and obviously and expert on the topic.

First off what stuck in my mind was that of the 3.6 million 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4 diesel trucks on the highway today 2.1 million of them are still the old brute 7.3 that hasn't been built in more than 10 years.

We often hear about the importance of using the proper coolant in engines but Rick had facts and pictures to back up the point. The different construction of the generations of Ford diesels each require a different coolant base. The new 6.7 with its compressed graphite and iron block is

very susceptible to coolant issues.

We all know about the high failure rate of EGR and Oil Coolers in the 6.0 and 6.4 and Rick was able to demonstrate how coolant is a direct contributor to failure of these high cost parts. When the proper coolant is used, combined with Ford's recent revision of coolant change intervals to 45,000 on ALL diesels, failure of coolers can almost be eliminated.

The other point Rick stressed was the need to calculate idle time into oil changes. For each hour of idle you should add 25 miles to the odometer

reading to determine oil change intervals. On many fleet vehicle that run all day and spend much of that time at idle it makes a huge difference in the life expectancy of the engine and internal parts. Rick recommend that all vehicles in our area use the severe duty interval of 5000 miles. If the truck idles 2 hours a day, 5 days a week that will add the equivalent of 1000 miles per month to the wear on the oil.

We need to stress this to our diesel customers and help them avoid costly repairs.

Thanks to Chastang Ford, Blue Diamond Parts and Rick Burleson for a good meeting.

THANK YOU CHASTANG FORD!

PRESIDENT'S CORNERGreetings Shop Owners and Associates!

Continuing education never stops in our industry. I would like to thank Chastang Ford for coming out last month and speaking to the group regarding diesels. Sure, we all know the trend is coming, but are you sufficiently prepared? Are your technicians ready, but more importantly is your company going to be able to accommodate the new opportunity? Come October, Chastang Ford will be presenting a diesel course for your techs. Their event last year was completely packed and the information was relevant to those who want to enter this market by performing the basic diesel maintenance. Details enclosed in Shop Talk, and be sure to RSVP at our September meeting!

There has been some confusion lately in regards to AAA wanting to open auto repair centers in our area. This is false. As a member of the AAA Approved Auto Repair Advisory Committee, and after personally speaking with Cliff Upchurch in the Dallas office, I have confirmed that AAA has “no plans of opening club owned repair centers in Texas”. It is important to understand that AAA nationally is composed of several different unassociated clubs. It is true that there are clubs who have opened a few auto repair shops. This is because they were unable to identify shops in their areas who could comply with AAA standards of certification, quality and ethics. From a business stand point, it would be ineffective for AAA to open auto repair centers considering the number of areas they now 'service' their members through their AAA Approved Auto Repair Program. The amount of capital needed would alone prohibit this venture. In addition, it takes someone dedicated with a passion for the industry to truly become successful. We are a rare group of hard working, underpaid, and committed folks. If anyone has any other questions in addition to this matter, please contact me personally.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our September 9th meeting! Karolena Serratos

mega Transactions Corporation is a well-trusted, family owned Oand operated credit card processing company. Omega has been processing payments for the automotive industry since

1989 and is located in the Galleria area of Houston, TX. Their auto repair division is headed by industry veteran, Bruce Whitaker and Certified Payment Professional and car lover, Kevin Burke.

Omega is proud to have won the BBB Awards for Excellence 6 years in a row and was the Pinnacle Award Winner in 2013. This can be attributed to the fact that Omega does not put any of their customers into a long term agreement and provides equipment at no cost.

Bruce and Kevin look forward to getting to know the members of the ASA and to show them that they are “not just another credit card processor.”

Diagnosing the Top Variable Valve Timing Problems

This one night seminar will prepare you to deal with mechanical and control failures, along with providing techniques to make your diagnostics more efficient on Variable Valve Timing Systems. VVT systems are used on most new engines to increase efficiency and reduce emissions. These systems are well thought out, but they have problems, which may present numerous pitfalls for the technician during diagnosis and repair.

Diagnosing Vehicle Electronics Problems

Today's vehicles contain a complex mix of sensors, actuators, and control modules to perform most functions. Raising a window can involve a switch module, door module, and body control module in addition to the motor

that does the work. A test light can only go so far in diagnosing these circuits and jumper wires can spell disaster if used incorrectly. The goal of this class is to prepare you to diagnose and repair problems in body, chassis, HVAC, and powertrain control systems, as well as the data bus which connects them. Case studies will be used to demonstrate techniques you can use to reduce the time spent on diagnosis.

As small business owners we have to wear a lot of hats and master many skills. One of them has to be the ability to see the “big picture” of the world around us. Unfortunately that includes politics and how changes in political philosophy will affect our bottom line.

The November 4th General Election is just around the corner. Almost every major State wide office is up for election including all of the State House members and 1/3 of the State Senators.

We encourage all of our members to get to know the candidates, offer support and donate at least some small amount to campaigns in their neighborhood. House members are the easiest to access and will listen to their constituents. While we may feel powerless to influence legislation the irony is that we, as voters, hold the real power.

Over the last few legislative sessions ASA has proved that we can influence decisions at the State level. It would be easier if all of our members would get out and vote for men and women who support small business.

Just as we invest in training and equipment, participate in the community and donate to local groups for the long term good of our business we should make sound choices in our political leaders.

Remember to vote November 4th!
