Background

• Origin in tepra, a typical village of rural Bangladesh, in 1978.

• Microfinance is the core program.

• Seven million clients across Bangladesh currently.

• around 3000 branches.

• Non-financial programs featuring education, healthcare, sanitation, hygiene

and agriculture support services.

• Self-financed organization.

• Vision: establish a poverty free society.

• Core Value: achieving cost-effectiveness and sustainability.

• Mission: Support and strengthen the economy at the bottom of the socio-

economic pyramid by facilitating access to financial services for the poor,

marginalized and disadvantaged.

Programs and Projects (Non-financial)

• Agribusiness Project:

– support to the potential entrepreneurs and traders of agro-products and farmers.

– operating the program since 2007 under a tripartite agreement among ASA, Bangladesh

Government and Asian Development Bank.

– 57,393 clients were provided loan amounting to BDT 3,987.4 million during 2014-15.

– 691 entrepreneurs and farmers were trained during 2014-15.

• Vermicompost Project:

– 10 Vermicompost farms cum outlets were established.

– farms produce Vermicompost and distribute among farmers at a subsidized price.

– 13.6 metric tons of vermicompost were produced and distributed among the farmers during

2015.

• Orange Cultivation Support Project:

– providing financial and knowledge support for enhancing local production.

– 50 orange producers of Chunarughat Upazila in Habigonj district were trained during 2015.

• Mushroom Cultivation Program:

– launched in 2015.

– started cultivating it on a pilot basis in Gazipur, Manikganj and Dhaka districts.

• Power Tiller Loan Program:

– started in 2014.

– small, medium, marginal farmers are offered the loan at reduced service charge.

– BDT 185 million was disbursed as Power Tiller Loan among 2,228 cultivators in 2015.

• Project on Dairy Farms:

– took an initiative in 2015 for setting up Dairy farms in every district of the country.

– under the project 1,190 entrepreneurs were provided with the financial assistance.

• Fisheries Project:

– training, technical support and soft loan as inputs are being provided to the youths

and fish farmers.

– BDT 15 million was disbursed as loan among 110 fish cultivations in 2015-16.

– 10,600 Learning centers have been set up in the underdeveloped localities.

– 25-30 students through holding a two-hour class/session every day over six days in a

week(per center).

– students also get involved in extracurricular activities once in week.

– provided teaching-learning service to 3,00,000 students.

• Sanitation Program:

– motto to improve the sanitation facilities of the poor and the underprivileged.

– provide training on sustainable sanitation technology and expanding its

marketing.

– offer soft loan to the poor and low income people for purchasing sanitary latrines.

– assisting members in installing off-set latrine in their households.

– disbursed soft loans amounting to BDT 437.5 million for the purpose among the

entrepreneurs and 45,939 off-set latrines were established.

– a plan has been taken to disburse loan amounting to BDT 420 million among

35,000 beneficiaries and to establish 40,000 more off-set latrines in the FY 2016-17.

– the program covers 58 out of 64 districts of the country providing service to about 7

million people.

– 49 Primary Health Centers established in remote areas.

– services including health checking, blood sugar test, blood pressure test, growth

monitoring of children and pregnancy test.

– medicines are sold to the patients at a subsidized price.

– also provide middle and old age groups with Physiotherapy treatment.

– 40,000 patients were provided Physiotherapy treatment during July 2015 – June 2016.
