as well as an understanding of how it is designed to operate0:49after reviewing the problem description:0:52we're ready to begin we start by observing the state of the system0:56in its as found condition the sight gauge tells us that the tankers for1:02and that the mixture appears about right the status of the previous batch was1:08timed out which means that the last batch1:11did not reach its destination all the lights on the control panel1:16are of and the emergency stop button is pressed1:20the next step is to operate the system1:23and look for signs of abnormal behavior before we can start the cycle1:28we must first release the emergency stop and drain the tank1:32the power and drain light on the control panel1:36turn on and a tank drains normally once the tank is empty1:41the ready light comes on when we restart the system1:46the cycle and intake one lights turn on1:49and it ain't begins to feel with the first fluid1:52at the midway point intake one-stop1:55and intake to starred2:00once the tank is full the second intake stops2:03at this point the agitator light should turn on2:07but it does not and we do not hear the agitator start2:11inside the power box we see that the2:14agitators overload is trip resetting the2:18overload causes the agitator contactor to pick up2:22but the overload trips again after a few seconds2:25to sum up our observations2:28we saw that the cycle operates normally up until the point when the2:33agitator should operate at which time its overload trips2:37the observations tell us a lot about the problem area2:41the control portion of the circuit can be excluded2:45because it works as expected in the power circuit2:49we can exclude the two phases which supplied the control circuit2:53also since the overload trips we know that their2:57is current in at least one phase of the agitator circuit3:00therefore the problem area is confined to the agitator power circuit3:06and the third supply phase3:09we now need to consider the possible causes3:12anyone over this list could produce the symptoms we're seeing3:17now we consider if there is an obvious probable cause3:21several are more likely such as in open views3:25or problems with the motor but there is not one that stands out3:30based on this we need to reduce the problem area3:34by testing because the overload trips3:37we know that there is excessive current in one or more phases3:41therefore our first test is to use the3:44am meter to measure the current in each phase we read locked rotor current in3:52two phases3:53but no current in the centre faced therefore3:58there is an open in the centre phase in the new problem area4:03the fuse is now the best place to test as a blown fuses in obvious probable4:09cause4:10to safely test voltage4:13in the power circuit we open the breaker each time we place the Leeds4:18the readings all Scholl full voltage4:28indicating the fuses are okay we now know that the fault4:33is an open in the centre phase somewhere between the bottom of the views4:37and a motor star point4:40since there is no obvious probable cause in the new problem area4:44we will need to perform tests to reduce it4:47to find it open in a three-phase motor circuit4:51and all meter is the best choice so we need to lock out the circuit4:56next we sexualized the circuit where it leaves the power box5:01by disconnecting a wire and measuring from there to the views5:05with the contactor closed we read5:09infinite resistance this means that the open5:12is within the control box we split this area5:16into at the bottom of the contactor the lower resistance reading tells us the5:21open is above the test point testing at the top of the contactor with it closed5:27indicates the contact is OK now5:32the only possible causes are one wire and its connections5:36we begin to disconnect the wire would find a loose terminal5:41since this fits the symptoms we tighten the terminal5:45to repair the circuit to verify the repairs5:50we test the full path through the motor the lower resistance reading5:56indicates the path is complete next6:02we get ready to test operate the system to make sure there are no other problems6:08had6:22had restarting the system6:28we see that tank begin to feel with the First Lord6:34and Dan switch to the second believed6:41once the tank is full we hear the agitator start6:44more indicating that we have prepared the malfunction6:48the cycle now continues mixing6:51and PD the flu6:58when the proper temperature is reached7:01agitator and here stop and the next year is7:04on to its destination7:14batch status now shows past soul we are done7:19the work order shows the total time7:22and cost for the repairs any valuation a bar troubleshooting process

0:40so if you're willing and capable of doing your own electrical repairs0:44additions renovations0:45and you checked its okay with your local authority and got the proper permits0:49then it's very important that you purchase a good electrical meters party0:53toolkit no it doesn't have to be really expensive meter0:57but just should be you lol or CSA approved1:00and it also should have two functions resistance in the oldest testing1:04and to a lesser extent current measurement for most situations1:09lawmakers measurement you're just looking for continuity1:12and you're looking for the presence of voltage soul1:15here's a perfect example we're going to use my day before you today1:18perfect example of a case where you might need an electrical meter final1:23what wires what where things are going we're gonna pretend that you're gonna1:27switch this okie this fixture out here1:29and you got put in a different light fixture here's the wiring as it is now1:35and what we're going to do is pretend that you just took part all these places1:38now you don't know what wire goes where okay so here's what typically happens1:43you gonna change is light fixture1:45all you know is that this which used to turn on that late1:49for you messed around with it you taking apart all those places1:52you if you like fixture no matter what combination use1:57things don't work the way they used to be the links on all time2:00or you turn the switch on the breaker chicks all the latest doesn't work at2:05all2:05so now you call me here asking me for help in this without a meter2:09the only way to figure this always strong and believe me2:12using the media is much quicker so what we've got a case like this2:17yes three sets of black and white wires2:20now bean is not three wires in this situation I and all2:25that this circuit is likely wired with only one switch2:28in this situation nor three ways in all this is likely2:32power and what he's gonna be your supply one of these cables will be here2:37power out to the rest to the circuit and one of these is gonna be a switch in a2:41drop down to the switch2:43typical wiring situation now2:46if the election in this case and Mark the white wire with a piece of black2:50tape as he should've2:52to the wire that goes down to the switch2:55the home wireless which they drop this to be a little easier to troubleshoot2:59but in this case3:00someone got sloppy did mark the wire and3:04keep in mind that he reckoned trace the wires as I can see them3:08with the Lord on the drywall in place you have no idea what cable holes where3:13solo here's how I instruct you to troubleshoot this circuit3:17we need to strip all these lawyers and do some tests3:21that's what we're going to do is strip the wires and all explain the testing3:24that we have to do to determine which one is the switch3:26which one is power in and then we can determine which is power held3:33okay so the first thing you want to do is make sure the power is off I know3:36you've probably trip that breaker a thousand times and in all of my heart3:40which one it is in the panel3:41however for a start playing with the organ wires you wanna check to ship make3:45sure there's no voltage air3:47setting our meter on faults AC in this case it's a3:51capital V without sign wavers little squiggle about to be3:55that's bought the GC so wanna check each pair3:58from pop to neutral make sure we have no power there4:02so we check HERE no power4:07I'm also check off the ground this make sure4:11no power there4:15points 000 63 balls move over to the other pairs Hotwire4:20no power there go back off the ground and checked a neutral4:26no power there4:29again will check other Hotwire4:33ha to neutral4:40of financial nothing there and we'll just go off the ground on that last pair4:46as well4:47no power soul4:51not over sure he got no voltage now we can check to find out which should the4:55wires goes down the switch4:56all switches is opening or closing a circuit soul with your owns5:01thirty-year resistance check you can tell if thats it is being made or broken5:06so go two holes on5:10this is an all ranging meters they don't have to worry about range5:13now member no resistance means a good circuit so5:17touch these two needs together the meter that point to5:21to mobile homes which is a bit is a very little resistance5:24to current flow so you have a closed-circuit their5:28same thing if we all turn the switch offer on we'll see the same thing5:32and open are closer to its old put5:35the wires sorry the liaison on one of the pairs wires5:40on5:46open so we have a little bit a resistance there that just tells me that5:50that's likely5:51going to another party the circuit and that make you laugh plugged in or5:55something we've got a little bit a resistance is5:57but we do not now6:00little resistance or no resistance by turning the switch on/off6:04so that pair wires is not our wires going to the switch6:10check the other fair well there we go6:15maybe or so we know that there isn't dole switch their6:19turn the switch on or off doesn't make any difference6:23here try this pair wheres6:27on open circuit6:31turn the sweatshop o'cleary go right back two point three ohms resistance6:36so we know all that that is the switch often6:39turn the switch on its closed so that's the second6:43the wire should say going to your switch argun identified this wire6:48as the hot it would never use a white wires6:52as a hot conductor you wanna identified with their little piece of black tea6:56are colored in with a felt pen should have been done in this case it would7:00save us a little trouble shooting7:02but will get that done men will go turn the breaker on we'll find out which one7:06of these wires is the hardware coming in7:08on alright so nice EF mark7:13the way wire with a piece of black tape7:16as to indicate that that's the switch late drop pull back the black wire that7:21goes with that as we know that's the return from the switch now7:24turn on the breaker set my meter back to voltage AC again7:29I'm gonna check to see which one of these cables coming in is the hot7:33supply wire checking here7:37that point 02 also nothing there7:40move over and neutral7:43on it doesn't really matter but you should put your call on7:49black wired nursery a common black7:53lead of your meter should go to the neutral when you read me7:57should be going to the hot black wire their house 117 balls and now I know8:04this cable is my power into the circuit watched by a process of elimination8:08means this one feeds power to the rest8:11second rest receptacles on that circuit or whatever else might be on8:16so now we know Swiss Chalet power in8:19power out now I can help you if you've asked me this question over the internet8:24and you've done all this trouble shooting for me8:26now I can give you the proper instruction on how to connect this8:29backup8:29case and when you've got this apart you want to make sure your ground wires are8:34connected properly8:35looking into the box he received that mine8:38blocks grounding and bonding stratos8:41yes I connected one of them bare ground wires8:45and this place together and there's a little pigtailed here8:49mass case here tonight fixture has a grounded8:53how I'll spotted to bonn deidre8:56fixture in bed pigtail hanging out here that can perform that function for EM9:03cut that back in for now I remember we have power in which we determine this9:08cable9:09power 0 is this cable so they just basically need to be connected together9:13everything needs a new troll including the light fixtures9:17soul we make this place and the two neutral wires here9:20and a few new fixture are you have to pay tail hanging out a bit9:25for connection to the neutral and all you need to do9:28is check a twist these two wires together9:32and for now I'll put in a rat on a9:35and neutral for years light fixture can get tied into this place when we're9:41ready for it9:42next thing we'll deal with those are hot wires9:46so we've got power im to the circuit power9:50over the circuit up to the rest of the circulation say9:54so they need to be spliced together along with9:57this white wire that goes down to the switch is now being used as a hot10:02conductor10:02and identified as such with that lactate it gets placed into the hot10:08place10:18Mac connection is done put a marathon not10:26so now we've got neutral in neutral 010:30and neutral Twilight got a hot wire in a hot wire out10:36and a hot wire down or switch back from the switch10:40the switches are off to terms with the light will be on10:44so not a light fixture gets connected between this black10:47and the neutral okay so for the purpose of our demonstration have put back to10:52keep this picture that we have here in the first place and make this place is10:55like I said between a neutral10:57and the black wire returning from the switch now it's time to turn the breaker11:01on11:02make sure we study the regime go to my room11:07turn on the lights wish and the Lightworks11:11it off and its of and I can use my meter to check the rest today11:16receptacles in the room make sure they're all working11:19many things back to normal so you can see just how valuable it is to have an11:23electrical meter in your toolbox11:25
