Rabbinic ReflectionThe month of Elul is the

season of reflection. Thismonth on the Hebrewcalendar is a time to reviewthe year that has passed andprepare for the New Year. Itis a time during which weengage in the age oldprocess of cheshbonhanefesh, an accounting of

the soul. This tradition teaches that we lookinward, contemplating the good and the not sogood of our year gone by, and making vows toourselves for the year to come. One of the classictexts that we read during Yom Kippur, the Bookof Jonah, also reflects upon this idea. For manyyears until his death last year, famed actorLeonard Nimoy read the Book of Jonah atTemple Israel of Hollywood each Yom Kippur. In his reflections on cheshbon hanefesh, heoffered these words of poetic inspiration:

I am not immortal.Whatever I put off for laterMay never be.Whoever doesn't know nowThat I love themMay never know.I have killed time.I have squandered it.I have lost days...weeks...As a man of unlimited wealthMight drop coins on the streetAnd never look back.I know now, that there will be an end,A limit. But there is timeValuable and precious timeTo walk, talk, breathe.Time to touch, taste, care. To warm the childWho is cold and lonely. There is time to loveI promise myself...I will.I amI am readyI am ready to giveI am ready to give and to receiveI am ready to give and to receive love

May his words inspire you as the month ofcheshbon hanefesh begins.

Kol tuv,

Rabbi Jay Sherwood

Cantorial CommentsWe have arrived once

again. Through tragedy andcelebration, passing andbirth. Another year. Anotheropportunity to reflect, tolament, to contemplate. Notthat we don’t have theopportunity to do this eachand every day of the year,

but how many of us really take the time, tospend a full day or two in prayer, worship, song, contemplation? Of course there are otherways to do this – bike riding, swimming, jogging, reading, writing poetry, golfing – butthe main difference is that when we come to thesynagogue to worship at the High Holy Days,in particular, we are part of a community.

It is incumbent upon us not only toshare joy and rejoice in the New Year together, but also to join as a community in pleading toGod for forgiveness. For the sins of our world, the sins against God and for the personal sins inwords or deeds we have uttered against ourteachers, our students, our friends, our parents, our partners. Even in our very deep, personalprayers, we know we are not completely alone.

Music is a key part of our High HolyDays – with a few simple notes – the HighHoly Day mode [nusach] heralds the familiarmelody Shanah Tovah Tikateivu helping usrecall Rosh Hashanahs past and reminding usof the spiritual journey we have ahead of us.The additional prayers and liturgy whichinclude Zochreinu [Remember us] andUnetanetokef [both added to the HHD Amida]Sh’ma Koleinu [Hear our Voice] Hineni [HereI am} Avinu Malkeinu [O God, our Ruler] SimShalom, Tavo l’fanecha, Ashamnu [We havesinned] and Kol Nidre [a release of vows whichhas become the name of an entire servicepreceding Yom Kippur] to mention only a few,are reason enough to spend time in thesynagogue for a few hours one or two days ayear and perhaps for once, not look at theclock. Don’t worry, none of us want to spendthe entire day [except on Yom Kippur] in thesynagogue; but we hope you will join us withopen hearts and minds as we prepare for acommunal journey of our souls. Beginningwith the ‘overture’ to the High Holy Days onthe evening of Selichot, we look forward toseeing you and your families and friends as weenter the holy gates of 5777.

Shanah Tovah Tikateivu – Ira and Samjoin me in wishing you a Happy, Healthy and aSweet New Year.

B’shalom,Cantor Jennifer Bern-Vogel

POSTPARTUMDEPRESSION

Here’s the most wonderful event in a woman’slife – a new baby! So why does she feel weepy andirritable? Why is she plagued by such sadness? Thisis a happy time – isn’t it?

And she doesn’t tell anyone and tries to hideher mood swings and restlessness. Something isterribly wrong with her, so she thinks.

But she’s in good company. Most women havethese “baby blues.” They usually go away after acouple of weeks and after a while her worry andguilt begin to fade.

Or, it gets worse and develops into full-scalepostpartum depression, anxiety, or psychosis . Andthen it needs to be recognized and treated. Momand baby shouldn’t have to suffer needlessly. Finally, we’re wising up a bit. Starting just thisspring, national depression screening guidelinesinclude new mothers.

Want to learn more? Go to the NationalInstitute of Mental Health’s website and find theirfacts on postpartum depression. Or if you’d likesomething closer to home, check out the InlandEmpire Perinatal Mental Health Collaborative. They have open meetings in Riverside and in SanBernardino during the year, as well as a goodwebsite. And they’re offering an all-dayconference, “Culture, Faith, and their Impact onParental Mental Health” at Loma Linda UniversityOctober 27th. Look for more on that in the comingweeks.

And, yes, there’s an app. If you’ve experiencedpostpartum depression or psychosis you can join astudy to develop effective treatments. Get the PPDAct app for iPhone and Android.

New babies are enough to handle. Womenshouldn’t have to cope alone with their wildhormone changes. And let’s get rid of the stigma.Let’s not also douse them with needless shame.
