The objective of this Standard is to provide organizations such as information services,

universities, libraries and union catalogue centres with the information retrieval application

services, protocol definition and support capabilities within an application that in turn are

supported by the Z39.50 protocol allowing the conformance requirements to be met by

implementors of this protocol.

The terms normative and informative have been used in this Standard to define the

application of the appendix to which they apply. A normative appendix is an integral part of a

Standard, whereas an informative appendix is only for information and guidance.

As this Standard is reproduced from an International Standard, the following applies:
