Who Do You Say that I Am?
When someone asks us a question regarding some controversial subject, it is always easy to say what
this person or that group thinks about the topic. It is usually more difficult, at least for some people, to say
what they themselves think about the situation. It is particularly difficult if we know that our answer is going
to create tension, rejection or even persecution. We can put ourselves in the situation of today’s Gospel and
ask how we would answer Jesus’ question: Who do you say that I am? Jesus was interested in what His
disciples had to say about Him. Did they really believe that Jesus was the Son of God? Did they really believe
in Jesus’ teachings? Were they really ready to put everything aside to follow our Lord, no matter how difficult
it might be?
Jesus poses the same question, “Who do you say that I am?” to each and every one of us. How will we
answer that question? Do we truly believe with our whole being that Jesus is our Lord? Do we take the
Gospel seriously? Are we ready to put aside everything and carry out our Lord’s will? Let us do some serious
self-examination this coming week and make sure that we can answer that most important question, “Who
do you say that I am?

Congratulations Deacon Mike Fitzpatrick!
On behalf of the entire parish of St. James the Apostle, Fr. David and the staff wish to congratulate Deacon Mike Fitzpatrick
on the occasion of his ordination to the permanent diaconate. May God bless Mike, Dawn and their family
as Mike begins his ministry as a deacon in service of the people of St. James.
Lord, endow Deacon Mike with the garment of salvation, the vestment of joy, and with the dalmatic of justice ever encompassing him. Amen.

It has been 4 ½ years since I approached Father David and shared my interest in pursuing the permanent diaconate, and now the
time has come for my ordination. Thank you for all your prayers through this journey. Not only could I feel those prayers, but at
times, they gave me the strength to continue until the end. As I now reach the end of that formal formation period, I realize it is not
an end, but the work is just beginning.
How did I get here… For 20 years prior to Dawn and I moving to the Glen Ellyn area for work, we were actively working in ministry with our parishes in Maryland and South Carolina. As many of you know, it was Dawn who accepted a position as the Director of the Respect Life Office in the Archdiocese of Chicago that led us to move to this area. Prior to that, Dawn was the youth minister at our parishes in Maryland and South Carolina. It was her work with the youth that kept my plate full with lots of outreach and ministry work to support our youth in their faith formation and help them see how our Church helps many in need in our neighborhoods and around the world.
As Dawn expanded her ministry to all 325+ parishes across the Chicagoland area, I began to feel a calling to be back in the parish ministry life that I had found so rewarding. Since our children were grown and we were becoming empty nesters, I began to ask God,
“what’s next?” He answered by leading us to Saint James at the same time Deacon John was retiring. His retirement created a need for an RCIA catechist, and I had already felt a calling to focus my youth faith formation experience more toward our young adult community. Shortly after Deacon John retired, Deacon Matt retired and moved to Tennessee. God’s plan was unfolding quickly before me, and the call to the diaconate was getting stronger. Finally, while praying before the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration, I asked
God “What do you want from me?” A small voice from the back of my head said, “I want all of you.” God had talked to me audibly in the past, but it was normally when I was struggling with a particular problem. This time His words were a call to action. I celebrated the 6th anniversary of that calling on Holy Thursday, this past Easter season.
What happened after that… The application to participate in diaconate formation is a long one. There are interviews with several deacons and priests from the diocesan offices. An extensive background check is done. Testing occurs around personality, behavior and current theological knowledge. Also, the applicants’ wives are part of this process. They are as much a part of the formation process as is the aspiring deacon candidate.
Then the classes begun. 2 semesters a year, 2 evening a week, for 3 hours, covering Christology, Ecclesiology, Moral Theology, Church History, The Catechism, Catholic Social Teaching, the Ministries of our Church and

the role of a deacon in those ministries and liturgies. Not to mention retreats, spirituality themed Sunday workshops, practicum experiences, and more – both for me and Dawn.
So here we are 4 years later and the biggest thing I learned is that we can never learn it all. I also gained a new appreciation for our Catholic school religion teachers and faith formation catechists who do not get enough credit for all they have learned and the time they are willing to volunteer to spread God’s word. When I heard God say that He wanted all of me, I did not realize how many have already answered His call and answered it joyfully.
What’s next… For me, as your newly ordained deacon, I plan on spending a lot of time working with you in our ministry efforts to feed the hungry and give support to those in need through our local food pantry, Catholic Charities and our St. Vincent de Paul Society. Also, you will see me at the ambo and altar during Mass. The liturgical requirements of the deacon include proclaiming the Word of God through the readings and preparing the chalice for consecration at the altar. And, on occasion, I will be your homilist. Deacons can also perform baptisms and weddings, and I look forward to celebrating those with you. Currently, Dawn and I coordinate the St. James Marriage Preparation Program. This and my position as RCIA Coordinator will continue as well.
Finally, the deacon is called to be the personification of Jesus Christ the Servant in our world today. As your designated servant, I hope to help shine a light on where we, as a church community, can make a difference in our larger community of Glen Ellyn. You will be hearing from me about outreach opportunities to carry out our corporal works of mercy for those in need, and I am looking forward to the work we can do as a collective force.
Thank you all again for all of your prayers and support these last 4 1/2 years, God Bless!
Dcn. Mike Fitzpatrick

My Experience. Jesus asks today: Who am I? Peter blurts out: The Christ. In that response, he means the Messiah, the Promised One, the Son of God, the One who saves, redeems, and binds us to God. Quite a mouthful. Profound belief. He is the very foundation of the Church, the People of God.
• What is my experience of Jesus? He is….
• How does my experience bind me to all who believe in him?
• Since I am called to be like him, whom will I save in some small way today?

You can still have fun, wear a mask, and stay
socially distant!! We proved that at our Camp
Rock counselor retreat day earlier this month. Prayer, Mass, great activities, and
time together was priceless. Our thanks to
Dickson Valley Campground for allowing us
to have this great opportunity. God is so good
all the time!

With another election cycle in full swing, we are faced with the difficult question of what it means to love our neighbors in the midst of such a divisive climate. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with anger and harsh language, often directed at people themselves.
When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities. As Catholics, we must model a better way. In response to this need, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has launched a year-long campaign calling for civility throughout this election year. Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate invites Catholics to pledge civility, clarity, and compassion in the public square and to call on others to do the same.
The Diocese of Joliet is challenging Catholics to model love for neighbor through respect, and compassion during the 2020 election cycle and beyond. Put your faith into action and make room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. Pledge dignity beyond the debate today at CivilizeIt.org!
