THE GENRE ITSELF; ACTION, ADVENTURE
Typically, an action move usually holds one or more heroes or characters with a ‘goodie’ role. These characters also usually come to face an evil character in some way or another in a heroic move to, for instance, save the world. Features which are often used in this genre film involve weapons, dramatic scenes and profound language. When the action films first hit the cinemas back in the early 1920/30s the movie genre found itself linking with genres with a similar feel. Adventure was a main link with action movies, as it created wider set of option the movie could go to; therefore creating the film genre action, adventure.
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT 1930• American war based film, basing itself
mostly on world war 1. This immiediently states why it has been given an action, adventure genre due to war being a very dangerous and adventurous scene.Being one of the first action, adventure movies released it takes great influence on the genre itself as it was set back when war between countries was at a critical state.
QUEEN OF THE YUKON 1940
• Mostly being based on the dangerous game of gambling the queen the yukon follows an action packed story line about a woman who sells her business to a mining company in an emotional mission of recovering her once lost child.
LAW OF THE JUNGLE 1942• Filmed in an adventurous safari
scene, an army of nazi agents get encountered who are causing trouble with the local natives. This was one of the first action adventure films basing itself on a completely different outlook of animals and jungle, however still using the nazi’s as a war fall-back to bring in the action section of the film.
MONSOON
1943• Set in the south seas an adventurou
story takes place involving a diver who ges looking for millions of sunken gold and who must concour many action packed missions; treaturous currents, a full-scale monsoon. This film uses the sea scene to add in the action factor of the film.
WHITE PONGO 1945
• Like the 1942 action, adventue film ‘Law Of The Jungle’ this film is set in a jungle scene, involving a monkey-like creature scourging the jungle being dramatically hunted down by a safari.
THE BANDIT OF SHERWOOD FOREST 1946
• Giving birth to the famous Robin Hood stories, The Bandit of Sherwood Forest was one of the first ever movies to hit the movie theatres in colour. Being one of the first Robin Hood stories also this movie started off the adventurous encounters Robin has and giving him the famous slogan; ‘Steeling from the rich and giving to the poor’.
BLONDE SAVAGE 1947
• Entailing a similar storyline of the 1930’s film ‘Tarzan’, Blonde Savage follows a story about a white girl that has been raised as a princess by the jungle natives. Again keeping the jungle theme, bringing in the action scenes the girl is involved in.
KIDNAPPED 1948• This grey-style film adaptation of a
novel of the same story, follows a deceitful storyline of the selfishness and greediness of the uncle of a son who has lost his father. The boy’s father has left an inheritance of which the uncle tries his hardest to kill the sun and keep the money for himself. Conflict and fights bring in the action factor to this film.
THE BIG CAT 1949
• Another action, adventure movie shown in colour; ‘The Big Cat’ entails an action packed story of a man on route to find the birth place of his mother, however soon finds out his journey is far from peaceful; due to conflict between a deadly mountain lion and fur hungry ranchers.
FORBIDDEN JUNGLE 1950
• Jumping back on the jungle theme band wagon, ‘Forbidden Jungle’ uses similar features of older jungle related action, adventure films. In this case a white hunter travels to Africa to search for a mysterious ‘wild boy’, who which may be his long lost grandson.
FURY OF THE CONGO 1951
• This adventurous, action packed film follows the story of a hero on a journey to rescue a pilot, only to find himself confronted with sandstorms, leopards and troublesome criminals. The hero is forced to make the drastic decision to use a tribes sacred animal to create a medicine to save a life.
BATTLES OF CHIEF PONTIAC 1952
• This seeking piece film is set in the wilderness of the 1700s Northwest America; a frontiers man tries his best to negotiate piece between red coats and an Indian chief. Dramatic conflicts prove to have the action factor in this film.
CAPTAIN SCARLETT 1953
• This classic action, adventure film entails the story of a Frenchman who, after years away, returns back home, only to find his lands have been seized by a nobleman. After courageously saving lives he makes it his drastic mission to recover his once own land.
NEVER LOVE A STRANGER 1958
• This black and white action, adventure film is based on its novel, following the story of a young orphaned boy who gets in with the wrong crowd and goes onto live a action filled, criminal lifestyle. Guns blaze in this young mans journey of becoming a ruthless gangster.
BILLY BUDD 1962
• The dramatic story is set in the 1797 when the war between England and France was at its peak; a courageous young British sailor is forced to fight for his life after being wrongly accused of trying to plot a mutiny. Using the typical war-scene helps give this film the action factor.
CAVALRY COMMAND 1963
• Set in 1902, the army have their chance to demonstrate their good will when the American cavalry brigade go to help a small village in the Philippines to build schools, bridges and roads. Certain challenge them on the way.
BLACK CAESAR 1973
• This true adventurous action packed movie follows the story of a power-hungry killer who hustles his way with his gang, trying to survive an all out gang war on the New York streets.
CAGED FURY 1983
• Another classic jungle scene movie; Caged fury involves the story of ten woman that are abducted in a remote jungle situated in the Philippines. The dramatic tortures and humiliations they have to endue push them to their limits.
COHEN AND TATE 1989
• This dramatic 1980’s film evolves around the story of a psychopath who is reluctant to kidnap a 9 year old boy who was apparent to be a witness in a mob hit. The child is witty enough to realise these men are up to no good and plays them against each other in a adventurous plan to escape.
BRAVEHEART 1995
• This passionate, emotional film displays the adventurous journey of a Scotsman on a mission to gain justice for his true love, whom was dreadfully murdered by an evil companion on the towns king.
IROBOT
2004• The Action, Adventure genre begins
to take itself to another level, a perfect example being this heavy action packed adventure, featuring Will Smith whom has to follow an adventurous journey of saving the world from the takeover of robots, who were once servants to humanity. By this moving basing itself in the future it can take other routes to the genre.
THE THREE MUSKETEERS 2010• This action packed modern
update of the classic swashbuckler, displays a heroic and skilful mission of a spy team helping the president of the United States battle against the bad guys and reclaim justice.
THE FIGHTER 2011• Set back in the 1980’s, this
emotional ride of a once champion boxer; the pride of his family and friends becomes hooked on alcohol and drugs and the true destruction of these demons begins to take place. In a desperate attempt to get his younger brother fighting fit, the addict pulls his life together and gets his brother to the top.
