AS FEATURED IN A KITCHEN FIT FOR A KING! We give some of Australia’s top designers a right royal challenge By Sarah Swain Siemens Domino cooktop, siemens.com.au William, Kate and baby George completehome.com.au kitchen yearbook 38 I t seems the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge love a good kitchen. Not only do they have two at Kensington Palace, but they’ve ripped out a perfectly good one (worth more than $70,000) and installed another at their country home, Anmer Hall, in the UK’s Norfolk. But what benchtops befit a future king? Should a queen-to-be go for gas or induction when it comes to cooktops? And which splashbacks would impress a duke? We asked some of Australia’s top kitchen designers what they would create for William and Kate. KIA DOUGLAS, WESTERN CABINETS I’d create a custom-made kitchen that makes an impressive statement and allows for entertaining. It would have a large formal space with a secluded scullery for preparation, and a large central island with a casual dining area would provide a place to watch over George and the new arrival. I believe simplicity speaks volumes. Clean and simple lines combined with a stunning feature timber burl (like that used on Mercedes and Rolls-Royce dashboards) would create an impact. It seems the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge love a

good kitchen. Not only do they have two at Kensington

Palace, but they’ve ripped out a perfectly good one

(worth more than $70,000) and installed another at their

country home, Anmer Hall, in the UK’s Norfolk. But what

benchtops befit a future king? Should a queen-to-be go for

gas or induction when it comes to cooktops? And which

splashbacks would impress a duke? We asked some of

Australia’s top kitchen designers what they would create

for William and Kate.

KIA DOUGLAS, WESTERN CABINETSI’d create a custom-made kitchen that makes an

impressive statement and allows for entertaining. It

would have a large formal space with a secluded scullery

for preparation, and a large central island with a casual

dining area would provide a place to watch over George

and the new arrival. I believe simplicity speaks volumes.

Clean and simple lines combined with a stunning feature

timber burl (like that used on Mercedes and Rolls-Royce

dashboards) would create an impact.

AppliancesAll appliances should be integrated to create sleek lines,

allowing the cabinetry and benchtops to be the main

features. A Siemens aCool Premium refrigeration freezer,

wine cooler and fridge, as well as 60cm pyrolitic oven,

combi steamer, combi oven, two warming drawers and

Domino cooktops, including 40cm teppanyaki plate,

would be installed, as well as an Italian coff ee machine.

Finishing touchesWine storage and glazed display cabinetry to show off

the stunning crystal ware that only a duchess could

own. All drawer systems would have integrated and

custom-made dividers.

ALISON ATTARD, ATTARD’SBench space and storage would be paramount in this

kitchen for both entertaining and day-to-day living.

I would recommend positioning the cooktop across

one end of the island and the sink towards the middle,

enabling the fridge, ovens and appliance pantry to be

at the other end, with a free-flowing bench on the other

wall. A mix of 6mm stainless steel, 50mm Caesarstone

Concrete and 50mm Calacatta marble benchtops

and waterfall ends provides diversity in texture while

maintaining consistency in colour. Grey timber-grain

veneer to the fridge wall incorporates the warmth and

dimension of timber while avoiding the country style

I know the Duke and Duchess don’t like.

AppliancesAs well as a Sub-Zero fridge and Wolf double oven,

I would add the Gaggenau combi steam oven which,

while being a healthy cooking method, can also be used

for disinfecting baby bottles. I would recommend Le

Piano cooktop by De Dietrich over a regular induction

cooktop. Although the Dornbracht eUnit sink — which

they’re reported to have — sounds fantastic, I’m not sure it

will work that eff ectively with pets and babies accidentally

triggering the floor sensor and turning the tap on

unnecessarily. A stylish alternative is the Blanco Claron.

Finishing touchesThe Zip HydroTap G4 is a must.

JENEFER MACLEOD, EAT BATHE LIVEA kitchen fit for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

must be elegant, contemporary and functional. Kate

loves to cook, so professional appliances, a practical

layout and hard-wearing work surfaces are a must.

Given that the family is growing, the kitchen space

would need to be conducive to family life, including a

lower-level meals area that could also double as a space

for homework. An integrated herb garden would be a

sustainable, practical and visually interesting inclusion.

AppliancesEncompassing exquisite design along with professional

cooking capability, Gaggenau appliances would be a

perfect fit for Kate’s cooking needs and designer style.

The Vario cooktops can include a combination of gas,

induction, steam and grill units — perfect for any dish

the Duchess desires to cook. As a finishing touch, we

would include polished rose-gold tapware. A Thermomix

is another essential for creating a multitude of healthy

dishes for her family, and how could Kate go past the

retro good looks and functionality of a KitchenAid?

Finishing touchesWe love a big bowl of fresh citrus fruits; the smell and

colour are so refreshing.
