Vitality, the Lincolnshire based programme of exercise and movement to music classes for the over sixties, managed by artsNK, delivers a very successful programme of over 45 weekly community exercise classes throughout the county with an average of 550 people attending each week. The Programme, which also offers a one to one Vitality Exercise Programme taking exercise to people unable to leave their homes, recently celebrated its success with two special celebration events for participants and teachers, at Lincoln Drill Hall and Springfield Conference Centre, Spalding.

Vitality participants enjoyed the chance to showcase their skills in special routines, as well as to share their experiences and the benefits to their physical and mental wellbeing the programme has had.

We spoke to Vitality member, Daphne Page, who won an award for ‘the most dedicated Vitality member’ from the Leadenham class, to find out more about her involvement with the scheme.

Daphne is a Lincolnshire lady, born and bred in Leadenham. At 85 years old, her energy and enthusiasm belies her years. She has been a regular attender at Vitality classes in Leadenham since the scheme started running 9 years ago and has

rarely missed a session. Even a recent hip replacement saw her missing very few sessions, before she was back setting up the refreshments for the group, as usual. When asked about her involvement, she was unstinting in her praise for the scheme.

“I think it’s an excellent scheme,” she stated emphatically. “It allows people of all levels of mobility to do as much as they can and also has a social element which is important for so many of us. I especially enjoy this side of things – although I love the dance part as well. After my recent operation, I just did the sitting exercises, until I was able to do more.”

Having only retired as church warden a couple of years ago, Daphne is convinced about the importance of community activities such as these:

“We need to get more people involved”, she mused. “It can do so much good.”

The NK Arts Partnership has announced the artists selected for residencies in North Kesteven as part of ‘Ridges & Furrows’, an ambitious arts project for the district, celebrating the area’s rich

heritage and culminating in a festival across the four locations in 2016.

Speaking on behalf of the NK Arts Partnership Nick Jones, artsNK Visual Arts Manager stated:

“We are really excited about both the quality and range of artists that have been selected for the residencies. The breadth of practice, of art forms and approaches means that the work will offer residents a variety of ways of getting involved, increasing the chance that people will find something that excites them. The artworks, inspired by each of the four communities, will be the perfect way of encouraging further exploration of the area’s heritage”

Artists, writers, dancers, musicians and theatre practitioners were invited to apply for new residencies in Sleaford, North Hykeham, Waddington and Welbourn in May and June 2015. Initiated by The NK Arts Partnership (artsNK, Design Factory, Design-Nation, the National Centre for Craft & Design and the Terry O’Toole Theatre) the residencies were open to artists working in any art form. The selected artists are: Hannah Nicklin, who will be based in North Hykeham; Jonathan Turner, based in Waddington; Lyndall Phelps based in Welbourn; and Katie Smith & Kate Genever who will be working together in Sleaford. The artists will work closely with communities within their residency location to explore the history and identity of the area through workshops, events, walks and talks. The longer-term legacy of the residencies and the festival will be the creation of a new arts and heritage trail that links the work of all the partners across the district with a special focus in the participating towns and villages.

Young people across Lincolnshire have been getting active and participating in Dance Factor Lincolnshire 2015; with the free street dance sessions for 11 - 18 year olds began in February this year. Dance Factor Lincolnshire takes dance into local communities providing young people with ten weeks of free dance rehearsals with a professional dance artist, and the chance to compete in a local semi-final event to win a place in the Grand Final.

This year’s project has expanded to cover seven districts of Lincolnshire thanks to a successful bid to win £50,000 of funding from the Big Lottery’s People’s Millions in November last year. Thirty new street dance crews have engaged more than 750 young people in dance, with sessions taking place in North Kesteven, South Kesteven, East Lindsey, West Lindsey, Lincoln, Boston Borough & South Holland. Alice Carter, committee member of

community group InspireDance, who are leading the project with the support of various partners including artsNK, said:

‘I am very excited about this year’s Dance Factor. Thanks to Lottery funding we are taking dance to new areas of the county and engaging hundreds of young people in a positive, creative form of physical activity. Young people will gain so much from the project in terms of skill development and personal growth, so it is very rewarding to be able to bring this to Lincolnshire’.

The Grand Final event will take place at The Engine Shed Lincoln, on Sunday 10 May, with finalists battling it out to be crowned Dance Factor Lincolnshire Champions by a panel of dance industry experts.

Over the past four years Altered has bought new work from contemporary artists to churches throughout Lincolnshire. A partnership project between artsNK, the University of Lincoln and the Dioceses of Lincoln, Altered was founded not only to bring contemporary art into ancient churches, but to inspire more people to visit these historic buildings and see them afresh.

The project culminates in May 2015 with Altered Festival. The festival is both a celebration of the project’s achievement, and the beautiful and thought-provoking work created, and a challenge to artists and church communities to build upon the foundations Altered has laid. Artists will be recreating previous work in new locations, and there will also be a series of special artist talks, walks and organ recitals.

The artsNK team have been working in partnership with Lincolnshire Sport to devise and deliver the cultural component of the Sainsbury’s School Games Winter Festival in Lincolnshire, which took place in Grantham on Wednesday 4 March 2015.

The Winter Festival featured two dance groups from Winchelsea Primary School and Skegness Academy, as well young vocal musicians from Carres Grammar School and Walton Girls School. We also commissioned East Midlands based artists, The Collaborators, to capture the atmosphere of the festival and the feel of the various sporting competitions. The

artists filmed throughout the day and projected the footage of the festival on large screens, allowing young people to visually mix footage of dancers and athletes performing and participating. The day was a great success with over 500 young people participating in sports, engaging in live VJing and watching other young people perform for them. Planning is now getting underway for the cultural component of the Summer School Games!
